Official Half-Life 2: Episode One discussion thread.

holy shit. this game is amazing. the screenshots do not do this game justice. it looks better then anything i have seen before. the a.i for alyx is damn good too and from what i can tell, the a.i in general is a lot better.

Valve said that the long loading was due to fragmentation. Now they have included a defragmenter for games in the recent update.

Right click the game in steam: Properties>Local files>Defragment Cache Files.

Nah, its only that level, plus it wouldn't make sense that a new game would be fragmented already.

Rate it, GAF. Episode One > HL2?

Far to early to say, though the gravity gun puzzles seem much better than the ones in HL2.

Heres a spoiler free screengrab:

my game crashed on me and i lost all my progress. someone willing to make a new save right at the start of chapter 3 so you can send it to me?

The game is awesome. This just happened:

When Alyx and Gordon discovers the Zombie Combine, she says something like this:

- Oh, look. A zombie combine. A... zombine. Zombine, get it?

And I just look at her, and when I do, she says

-...o-kay.

...like she knew I was making a face at the bad pun she made, and I really did make that "oh-that's-the-lamest-thing-I've-ever-heard"-face at the screen. Awesome. :D

Yes, Half-Life excels at giving you the illusion you impact the world.

Admittedly, if that's intentional and thematic, that would rule.

Just warning you that some people are beating it in less than two hours. Can't say I'm a fan of episodic content, but the game is still awesome.

Just finished it, total playtime was a bit over 3 hours. Very very well made, it took an interesting approach in that you are more the escortee then the escorter when it comes to Alyx. It's almost like playing RE4 from the perspective of Ashley (though obviously you can protect yourself better then she can).

They give you a few moments to stretch out and kick some ass, but about 80% of it is manipulating the environment to help facilitate Alyx kicking ass. Hopefully they ratchet up the action a bit more for episode 2.

Hur lå.. How long is it according to the reviews (assuming there are some)?

Edit: 5 hours? Pass I'm afraid.

The default difficultly is set on easy so unless you change it to medium or hard you're going to go through it quickly.

This is well worth the money.

sorry, but new weapons+environments is exactly what I look for in an expansion pack. pass.

and 18 months just for 3 hours? and we have to go through this all over again with eps2+3.

Goddamn you people make waiting for work to end unbearable.

From the sounds of it (2-3 hours) the game is about the length of Blue Shift, is it not?

Welcome to episodic content.

Agree.. I'm not so far in, but I like what I saw until now. Everything is peaced very well, with a lot of action and different things to do one after another.

any new assets used? because in 18 months most devs would make a new game from scratch.

They have been updating Counter-Strike Source constantly, working on Day of Defeat Source, updating\tweaking the Source engine, fixing Steam, making console ports of HL2, and god knows what else. It's not like they have been doing nothing since HL2's release.

I need some cheats for HL2, I really don't want to play through all the parts I've already gone through. I want to get to where I was. Damn computers.

about 3hours 30mins on hard. That was short :(

Ending was very WTF IS THAT IT ARGHHHHHHHH

and the episode 2 trailer stuttered like mad on my pc so i stopped it. Gonna restart and try it again.

I'll probably play through it again tomorrow with the commentary on heh.

ps. I don't know about anyone else, but I thought this felt WAY more like HL1 than HL2 odd that. Definately not a bad thing though :) maybe it was the vents

and there are also a few very amusing moments such as the zombine and barney giving you another crowbar.

ohh and
Dr. Kliner telling everyone to shag LOL

I'm on chapter four now
at the part with the Antlion queen.
Been playing for about 3-4 hours so far. Loving every minute of it. I love how it expands on the puzzles in HL2 while adding new twists to the game. Level design is GREAT too, same "areas", totally different concepts. Great stuff.

So far it's on par with HL2 as far as quality goes, we'll see if it can improve even more in the second half of the game. :D

So people have finished it already? Time to start discussing episode 2 now? ;)

I picked up my copy earlier but won't be able to start it till later tonight. I'm debating on whether to play through episode 1 on my 9800PRO, or wait for my X800XL to come in the mail and then play it.

Well, the game feels to damn short because it is a really nice experience.

It doesnt really cost more than a DVD and offers way more entertainment value... So I dont think the price point is too much off the mark.

Valve could probably do more with the series if they did less playtesting... From the sound of it they spend like 3-5 months to tweak a chapter

The defragmentation option is there for all games in steam now.

You realize that the pic is from a game that isn't on Xbox.

For the LAST time YES. I realize this. HALF-LIFE 2 is on Xbox and therefore I can play it in HI-DEF on my XBOX 360. After I complete Half-Life 2, I will then play HALF-LIFE 2 EPISODE 1 on my LAPTOP aka my PC.

YES I REALIZE HL EP1 IS ONLY ON PC. I KNOW THIS.

Geez, take it easy.

If you want to view the Ep2 trailer directly, the file for it is in your \Valve\Steam\SteamApps\<username>\half-life 2 episode one\episodic\media directory, looks pretty cool.

Well people keep saying it's not on Xbox it's not on Xbox. I know it's not on Xbox. My post was talking about HL2..which it clearly says; not Episode 1.

What you fail to understand is that HL EP1 is not on the Xbox 360.

Only four pages for this excellent title? NeoGAF you fail :(

I'm still playing through it, and I'm guessing a bunch of other people still are too.

You guys are starting to change my mind, but I don't know. I loved Half-Life 2. I mean loved it. I skipped all my college classes the day that it came out and probably played through it 5 times or so, but SiN really turned me off to the whole episodic thing and, being poor, would rather save my money to buy an actual full length game rather than just get the 3 hours everyone is saying it takes to finish. I just don't know.

If I had to choose only one adjective to describe this game, I would have a difficult time deciding between "good" and "short."

Should have been $15.

SiN is completely different from HL2. People let nostalgia clog their brain with SiN. The eps NEVER looked good. This is a Half Life 2 episode people. You know it's going to be fantastic.
