Official Katamari Tribute Thread of Forever

The controls take some getting used to. I find the "quick turning" (holding up + down) to be a bit slow, but other than that it's just a matter of gettings used to how it controls.

you know you can do a 180° turn by pressing both L3 and R3 ?

thats how it has always been, its to punish you for not using the motion of forward inertia. Its very easy to turn with a bit of speed.

I'm having a hard time getting any real speed out of my katamari. And how could you in the confined spaces of the indoors levels? Even with good speed, making sharp turns seems almost impossible. I should be holding both sticks at up-left or up-right for optimal turning, right? Holding them to the left or the right just makes you roll sideways, and not turn.

I think my problem may be that I'm trying to play it like a normal third person game (holding the sticks in the direction I want the katamari to go), which obviously doesn't work very well.

I've ordered this...as I liked the demo even though I thought it controlled bad...I think I can learn to like the controls.

Can anyone give me a few pointer in terms of what I can expect?

During the demo I was scoring between 9-18 points which seemed little as it would show 99 being the highest...even though I collected a ton of stuff and made the ball quite massive...

So I'm finding the scoring system slightly confusing...and dare I say punishing?

Well, it's a hard game (at least if you, like me, are not very familiar with the controls). I haven't managed to make the King/RoboKing not be disappointed in my katamari size and number of points yet. :lol

I'm new to the franchise so...yeah the controls are alien to me. That being said they are not bad...just different and for sure I've scratched my head a few times at the controls...

I'm now decently comfortable with the controls...but the scoring system I just don't get what criteria I have to satisfy in order for the King to be happy and score more then 9-18 points. I know there are gifts/present on levels and they look valuable...but I'm finding it difficult to know what is actually a gift and what is just your typical fodder...

Did any retailers other than Gamestop stock this early (I lack preorder)? Not really an emergency considering it comes out on the 22nd anyway, but I'd like something to do on Sunday.

For newbies...
You will NOT get the king happy from your first run through of the game....getting him happy is like completing expert mode, it fn hard as hell, and will take you many hours to prefect....so dont let him get you down, the only way to make him happy is to know the levels, do them real fast and know where all the "huge" items are, the last minute of rolling is the most important
EDIT: I STILL havent "picked up" the king in the last level of We <3 Katamari, and I got it day 1

I missed the 360 Katamari so it's nice to play this game again after so long.

Though I forgot how much I suck at a lot of my first attempts in each level. :lol

couple of pics I took w/ the in-game camera:

Seems like the in-game pics are 640 X 360. Played it on a 42" 1080p, and it looked great. The different stylistic effects make jaggies an almost non-issue, kinda like Valkyria Chronicles.

Wow, I just played the stage where you're supposed to
keep your Katamari burning and then light a large fire
, and to my large surprise that stage runs at a constant 60fps without a single framedrop (instead of 30fps with plenty of framedrops, like most other stages). I'm thinking maybe this is because this is the first stage which doesn't use the "New" visual style (pencil sketch). I haven't unlocked the other visual styles for the other stages yet, so I haven't been able to test if using another one would improve the framerate, but... we'll see. I really like the "New" style, but if using another one improves the framerate this much I can live without it.

So is this game like a combination of the other katamari game levels just remixed?
Thats what it seems like kind of dissapointing.

Wow, I really love the art style in those pictures. This is exactly the style the game should go with in future games. I can't see Katamari working with ultra realistic graphics, I think it might make the game seem a bit horrifying (rolling up realistic people and animals) and take away from the fun feel of it.

Yeah, plus a few completely new levels. For me it's great, since I haven't played any of the previous games.

Yes, the game looks really good. It's obviously pretty low-poly and simple-looking, and the textures aren't that great, but the visual style makes up for it all. Unfortunately, framedrops are a bit too frequent (except in the one stage i mentioned in my last post, which runs at 60fps without a single framedrop).

Bitching about framedrops in a Katamari game... :lol

What's more wrong about biching about it in a Katamari game than any other game? It really breaks the flow when the framerate drops from 30fps to 15-20fps for a few seconds, everything feels slowed down.

This has a far smoother framerate than any other Katamari game that I can remember.

Most of the time it's fine (stable 30fps), yeah, but I'm a bit disappointed that the frame drops even exist. They shouldn't have to, in a game of this limited visual fidelity. Then suddenly comes a stage that runs at double the framerate, with no drops. It's just weird.

How bad was it in previous games (haven't played them, and I don't trust YouTube videos)?

It got really bad before when your katamari went up to the next size, and when there was just a lot of stuff on the screen. When I was playing this last night, I was actually thinking about how smooth it was playing.

Does anyone know what the actual perfect score for a level is? You would think it's 100pts when it tells you perfect score, but I just got 120pts on a level and I don't know if I have to replay all the levels to get more points.

120?? damn!

I've gotten like ~26 on a bunch and even 9 on one level, lol.

Anyone know how you change the graphics options to 'wood tone' and shit? Can you do it in-game or before you start the level?

Scores are out of 100.

If you do particularly well you can get 120.

I heard of people getting it early at Gamestops and my mom was in town (closest stores are 25 min drive) so I asked her to check at gamestop for it. They had one, but it was the open copy. She called asked if I wanted it, I said sure (though I really don't like getting the gut copy)

Then I get a call just now that she really didn't like buying the open game, so she checked at another gamestop that was near where she was goin an they had a sealed copy. Woooo :D

I managed to get 100 points on the level where you are trying to get as large as possible while racing around a track on an island. I grew so large that I could roll up everything except for the island itself. That's an awesome feeling.

You change "tones" with L2/R2 on the level select scren (where you can also switch music with L1/R1, if you've unlocked more songs) but you need to unlock the other styles before you can do it. Not sure how you do that. Maybe by completing all the levels once? I've played one level which defaulted to the wood tone (the one I mentioned earlier, which runs at 60fps), but I still can't use it on any other level. Wood looks much better in motion than it does it images, by the way. Everthing has a shiny, polished look to it.

Love the rearranged music, Everlasting Love in english = <3

Can't seem to get good scores with roboking, highest I got with him so far is 88.
Don't have that problem with the regular king, already got 120 points twice.

Anyone knows how to change the visual style ?
I want to get my old PS2ish katamari game :D

Once you complete a level you can press the triggers to change to visual style when you go back to it.

The same applies to the Music.

The "Camp" level is driving me insane. Either the fire goes out or the Katamari isn't big enough to start the fire at the top of the hill. Or do I just roll until time runs out?

I had some trouble with that level initially; it took me about 4-5 tries. It's basically just a matter of contantly rolling up objects until the time is almost up. You've just got to learn where to go to get loads of objects of the right size (and remember to go back to stuff you couldn't get before once you've grown larger, etc).

Can someone confirm this:

Also, the cutscene videos seem strangely choppy. They "jump" slightly every few seconds, as if they were not being played at the correct framerate. Not sure if this is a universal problem, or if it's only in the PAL release. Not that it matters much, it's just a bit annoying.

To clarify, I'm talking about the cutscenes with the Queen and the weird Power Rangers look-a-likes (but also the intro movie and some other stuff). My suspicion is that Namco has made the videos in the PAL version run at 50hz (to let them run smoothly on 50hz SDTV sets), which doesn't go very well with the game running at 60hz (1080p60), thus making them jerk a bit now and then.

I don't think it's an issue with my specific disc, as I don't see how that could only affect the videos (also, the sound that's playing during the videos is completely fine). The rest of the game works just like it should (well, aside from the slowdown in almost every level).

By the way, I absolutely love the music in this game! So uplifting and happy, it makes me feel really good.

I've completed all of the stages in the "Katamari Forever" mode (the normal one); now I've just got to do it in a few other modes, and then get perfect scores in every mode. I think this game is going to last me a good while.

For anyone who hasn't got it yet, you can get $5 discount on Amazon with the code AMZNKATA courtesy of CAG
Thanks for the tip! I cancelled my old order and placed it again so it would be $37.29 total!

I would have had to pay $55 after tax if I purchased the game at a local store.

FMVs are kind of jerky on the US one too.

Thanks for the confirmation. I always feel a bit silly asking about things like that, but I just wanted to make sure there's nothing wrong with my copy of the game. I'm a bit OCD about things like that.

It's a bit weird that Namco would let something like this happen, though. Not that it's a big deal, but how hard can it be to make sure that FMVs run smoothly? Having them jerk like this is a bit distracting (to me), and kind of breaks the smooth feeling of the game's presentation. Oh well, less obsessing, more rolling!

EDIT: By the way, I'm not referring to the crude animation, but rather that the videos seem to skip a few frames here and there, so that animations which should be smooth (like the Queen walking across the screen) appear jerky.

I haven't played a Katamari since the first one(I also played the iPhone one, but I don't count it), so I think I'm definitely going to get this. It has trophies right?

Yup, I think trophies are mandatory for all PS3 games released since the start of 2009.

I've read some reviews of the iPhone one, and it seems kind of terrible. True?

Yes, it has trophies,
33
of them.

So very awesome. Not since Super Mario Galaxy have I heard such a brilliant videogame soundtrack.

Yes, the controls were unbearable for me, I couldn't play more than 2 levels. I enjoyed every other Katamari game, I even liked the PSP game which many people thought had bad controls. The iphone controls are MUCH worse.

I actually really enjoyed the iPhone game. Controls weren't that bad for me. Biggest complaints though is the framerate was absolutely awful for the most part and it only took me like an hour to finish. If it's on sale I would definitely say get it if you love Katamari. Oh and there's only one song in the entire game I think.

Quick Q...

I just completed a level and it is asking me to choose a star or stardust?

Which do I pick?

If you choose to make the katamari into a star it will replace your previous star on that level (so you should only do that if you got a better score than last time). If you choose stardust the new katamari will just be destroyed.

Riiight...

Yeah...I'm confused. I got the same score but picked up more items and presents...but did it in more time...

New star?

Even if you choose to turn the katamari into stardust, you'll keep whatever cousins/presents you collected during that run. Any new items that you gathered will be listed in your collection as well.

Don't sweat it too much. The "star" option is mainly to show off your highest score.

You also get a trophy for creating your first batch of stardust, so there's that, too.

Well, if it's the same score it doesn't really matter, I guess. The score is what counts. I personally like my katamaris as large as possible, so I would keep the largest one. ;)
