Official Monster Hunter Freedom 2 Thread:Slay them and Wear em!!

I must say, you guys are talking this up quite a bit. May pick up MHF2 on the cheap until Unite releases. Hrm. Is it worth leaving Phantasy Star Portable for, though? Decisions, decisions.

The mention of that game is not welcome in this thread.

Fuck lock on, game doesn't need it.

Just a dynamic camera to follow the main Mob Hunt or something (eg: the 'lock on' from SOTC), please. I shouldnt be fighting the games controls more than the beast's move set. Especially things like giant apes that charge or leap from one side of the map to the other in a heartbeat. Fine without lock-on, but for a portable game having a completely manual camera is pretty unforgiving and turns off a lot of people.

Honestly, this game takes almost every element of PSO and PS Portable and trumps it. Graphics, gameplay, sound, hell I even like the "nonexistent" story (i.e. setting, or world or what have you) BETTER than I the PS's. And mind you this is from a Sega fan that's played the crap outta PSO and PSU. As for the camera, its harder to deal with then say, PSU's but since I started on PSO from the DC and GC (which had a HIDEOUS camera system) I really had no problems getting used to this one.

But honestly I gotta go with r-b-x on this one MH2P pretty much made Phantasy Star Portable unplayable for me...

Oh and do yourself a favor, if you jump into MH do it at Unite. Otherwise you may end up buying 2 games (and spending MORE money) if you end up liking it and wanting more. If you don't then just bring it back for the full refund or trade in or whatever.

Anyone who played any of the PSO/U/P's for the story was doing it all wrong. And thanks, sounds good. I'll jump in with U, hopefully SCEA has their act together and has released Ad-Hoc party by then.

See you guys then!

Not so, PSO's camera even tracked the boss' movements accordingly. I agree that the design and loot and everything is far greater, but the controls and camera work just bring it crashing down for me. I've been having some great casual fun with Phantasy Star, so to then switch back to this just shows how unoptimised it is as a portable title.

Im used to it, and it doesnt bother me since im fairly agile/not attack crazy, but I can see why some people might get mad initially.

I'm in the "Fuck a lock-on" camp myself, but if I were Capcom I'd at least put it in as an option. And then with it some kind of drawback like the player using it has a loot penalty or damage reduction or maybe has to run around wearing a diaper or something.

Why are people even talking about lock on in this? Not a single monster hunter has or will have the option.

It's part of the combat mechanics to NOT have a lock on feature, you people should seriously drop it:D

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite details:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/04/06/monster-hunter-coming-to-psp/

"Trailer" stars a goof ball. But some good background info for people not familiar with Monster Hunter.

Colin Ferris, Capcom Marketing Manager, said this in the comments:

1) Ad-hoc Party / Link - This is the service in Japan that lets you connect with other players and play Monster Hunter by wirelessly connecting your PSP to your PS3. There is nothing I’d like in this world more than bringing that service to the US. Well… that’s a little exaggeration, but I will be citing your feedback here as yet another reason we need to bring that across. Maybe if we all ask loud enough, the right person will hear and we’ll get this for everyone in the US and Europe.

Well they did say they had a "surprise in June that would allow more people around the world to experience MHF:U". So its either world wide release of Ad-Hoc party, a PSN retail release, or just a demo on PSN.

Sup folks, I just picked this game up yesterday and im very new to the MH. For years i've played PSO, then PSU, and finally PSP. Monster Hunter piqued my interest when MH3 was originally announced for the PS3 and thought how awesome it would be to have that kinda game on the PS3. When it got cancelled and moved to the Wii I kinda lost interest until yesterday when I was reading the thread regarding all those upcoming Capcom games and saw Monster Hunter. So, i picked it up for the PSP...

I really want to like this game but its very difficult to me right now. The biggest hurdle for me right now are the controls. Specifically, character movement...I was reading about how 'lock-on' is a non issue but to me it really is. It gets frustrating when my character moves like a boulder and everything around me is a lot more spry and agile. The training was even kicking my ass :lol

I vow not to give up cuz it has everything i like, material collection, wep/armor crafting, lvl grinding, etc...but DAMN, totally different than PSO/U/P.

Any advice for someone that's making the jump from Phantasy Star to this? I've read that after MH, most of you cannot go back to PS. I want to experience that feeling cuz im ready to move on from PS.

Which MH are you playing?

Just hang in there, the learning curve is quite high, so it'll take you a few days (weeks, months?) to make it second nature. I think MH is one of the few games that can get away with this, somehow it just adds to the charm.

Try the different weapon types, stick to something easy to begin with and learn!

I remember how the Kut-ku seemed impossible to beat at first, but I just wasn't skilled enough. Even with the same weapons I used back then, he's now a regular chicken to me.

I bought MHF2. Right now im using the daggers, which they call scythes...That right there is crazy to me :lol

Just remember. Train up with MHF2, but the real party will be Unite. Even though it's just Monster Hunter Freedom 2 with additional content, it's still supposed to be really be built for the PSP.

You can transfer all your stuff from MHF2 to Unite so that works.

I was in the situation as you. Big PSO/PSU addict.

Seriously stick with it. It sounds like you are starting with Dual Swords, which is what I did. Duals were the only thing I found fast enough to not get my ass kicked. In the begining get your bearing by doing nothing but the forward lunge attack (Triangle+Circle, or running weapon draw) and then follow it with a roll. Thats how I learned, just one quick lunge and then a roll to escape from harms way. Also try to aim your lunge towards the backside of the monster so that they have to turn to face you in order to attack buying you more time. That may not be how your supposed to use Dual Swords but thats how I learned how to deal with the differences between how MH controlled compared to PS.

Once you have gotten the hang of it move on to another weapon. That took me a long time because I was using Dual Swords exclusivly for a while. Eventually I wanted to learn how to use slower weapons so I tried out great sword, the slowest weapon. With great sword, the hit&run tactics I learned by lunging with Duals applied really well.

Everyones situation is different but hopefully you start to like it. It took me a while to get as comfortable as I am now but it feels satisfying. PSO now feels limiting and like a mindless "easy mode". Post my MH experince I tried the demo of PSPortable and it is soooooo boring to me. I have no interest in the upcoming PS0 on the DS. I can't go back.

Learn to roll and time your attacks and you will be good to go.

Once you play for a while you will get better with how long it takes to attack and you can really begin using things like the Great Sword to your advantage.

And you will get your ass handed to you, which makes adapting and learning from your mistakes much more rewarding.
