What's with the CBC putting Fisher on the spot by showing the replay of that goal. Big deal, he clipped Brodeur. Everyone knows it. Why rub it in his face? Oh well. Ottawa won, and the CBC cries for another day.

Realistically, he clipped him, but not on purpose. Get over yourself. Fisher's skate wasn't in the crease. :/

"Fans are happy! They're doing that... thing. When they jump up and down. Wow am I old folks, so very very old and tired."

I lol'ed at that as well.

Say what you like about Sweet Lou (and I say he's a sour old crank who's largely responsible for the trap/defensive malaise of the late 90's) but he takes a disappointing/controversial loss like a man at least. Lindy Ruff could take notes on losing with a modicum of class... oh wait, Lindy needs lessons on *winning* with a tiny smidgen of class before he's ready to take a controversial setback without wigging out like an over-tired toddler.

Yeah, Brodeur's foot was out of the crease and he did have enough time to recover.

Goaltender interference is goaltender interference. Having half a second to recover is not "enough time". It was a missed call, and it's unfortunate that a missed call is what lost them the game.

Well, the clock started late last game on NJ's 2nd goal, that's how the game goes.

This ain't yer daddy's Senators, boys...Ottawa could have panicked after running up against a hot goalie (a.k.a. "Moddy being Moddy" as Lou put it) as they've done so very many times in playoffs past, but they stayed focused and found a way to win this time around. It certainly doesn't hurt that everyone, even the star players like Spezza, is sacrificing, blocking shots, etc. (though still taking one too many dumb penalties for my liking). Yeah, the goal may have been questionable, but teams that go far in the playoffs are blessed with a certain amount of luck, and for once it seems to be on the Senator's side. Still, a 2-1 lead can easily slip away, as Tampa Bay knows well, and Moddy can steal a series on his own, so the next game is absolutely crucial for both sides.

Calder, it seems like you returned to this thread solely to slam Lindy Ruff as much as possible...even somehow in games that don't involve him at all. All I'll say to defend him is that each of his "wig outs" is calculated to produce an effect. Usually he's trying to push his team's buttons, but more recently after Ruff threw a tantrum at the end of game 2 against the Rangers, his team somehow managed to get every call in game 3.

It's soooooooo nice having Drew Remenda back with Randy Hanh. I sure hope it's not the last time they're together. Go Sharks!

Wish I could get that feed. I miss Dreeewwww =(

I'm stuck with TSNs. Had to put on NHL Radio.

Awful 1st period. Uninspired play for being at home.

We lose the series if we lose tonight.

EDIT: Tied. Bout ****in' time.

I have no clue why I'm so angry with this team. I just am tonight.

EDIT2: Dan and Jamie (Sharks radio team) are being awful homers tonight. They're usually not this bad...

Paul Kariya is a kitten, not a puppy.
Speaking of Kariya, I hope the Preds can resign him, despite his disappearing act down the stretch and in the playoffs. He's expressed some interest, but it sounds like Vancouver is really interested along with Columbus. Getting Kariya and Handzus in and some sort of replacement for losing Timmonen would be nice. I didn't expect to be looking forward to free agency right now :(

Dan and Jamie are usually pretty good so that sucks that they're not doing well tonight. I usually listen to them while at work or on the way home if a game is on. Randy and Drew are doing great. I really love the Sharks commentary team. They just sound different compared to most NHL commentary. They call it with a bit more enthusiasm and as fans as well as have a good sense of humor. I hate John Schader though.

The Sharks are just punishing Detroit along the boards and have been controlling the game since the second period. Detroit is just trapped in their own zone and look pretty hapless.

Wow... Wings owned the first period, but the second and third periods looked just like the last two games.

Hasek has been mediocre this series and the Wings just keep turning over the puck in their end too much.

We may have won, but we're still putting piles of crap on the ice.

We're far more capable than what we're showing, but just like last year, the heart simply isn't there.

Though Thornton was a man on a mission. At least one guy's got heart. Well, him and Grier; thats understood without saying anything though, as Grier is a god.

Some excellent moves by Wilson, changing lines up on the fly. Couldn't let Babcock predict what he was playing against next.

This team has yet to show up for an entire game 100% in the playoffs.

The Preds will be better off without Kariya. Fool ain't gonna win shit, ever.

Yeah, same here. Canucks have 20 FAs to sort through this summer (after celebrating that Cup!) so they could probably swing it though.

I think we didn't start out strong. Not totally bad, but not nearly as well as we could play. However, about at least half the second and all of the third I thought we were pretty strong. I agree that we need to see it three periods all the way through, but I really liked how they dominated in the third.

Kariya, Sedin and Sedin. MAGIC!! Actually, I just want any fast skilled player with the sedins. Imagine the cycling! omg.

Anyways, Vancouver has now proven that it can go toe to toe with the Ducks. Next game we'll win and in the end, Vancouver will win in 7. Then I'm hoping Detroit wins so we can play against Bertuzzi and beat them. Then Vancouver versus the Sens (yes, I really think the Sens can make it) but I think an even better match up would be Vancouver vs the Rangers!!!

Why would you want to put Kariya on the Ikea line? Stick a capable young guy there that gets paid shit. He's playing for more money and he'll get lots of opportunities to earn it with teams focusing on the twins.

Let's see how they do when Anaheim doesn't get called for 10 penalties in a game.

I thought there was some ticky-tacky shit being called on Sunday. Glad to see we were able to shake it off, though.

It's all rumor but I've been hearin the Kariya/Vancouver thing for a month or so now. Seems like a good fit to me.

Volchenkov with 8 blocked shots and he doesn't get the third star? :lol

Karma's a bitch ain't it Lou.

You serious? I remember him blocking a shot inthe third, but yah. The guys legs must be horrendous with the bruises.

And what's this with Spezza blocking a shot? Is that enough for getting him a Selke?

Slightly off-topic, but is anyone watching Ice Hockey's World Championships? I can never get into NHL or other leagues, but I love watching international tournaments.

I follow the scores, but that's it. It doesn't interest me as much anymore. Canada is doing well though so that is good. :)

I would consider returning simply to diss Lindy Ruff at every opportunity a damn fine reason to post in and of itself. His antics are embarrassing, whether you take him at his word that he's just 'emotional' and 'losses control' or choose to believe instead that he's a cynical calculating actor trying to show up the refs and the league in order to get any tiny scrap of advantage for his team. Either way, it's all douche to me and I'll continue to bitterly complain about it. ;)

I really enjoy the IHWC every year, I'm a total sucker for all the second and third tier international tourneys. :) I wanted to post about it earlier but I couldn't find the offseason NHL thread. Basically my only thought so far is that Canada is a clear underdog with the very young team they have and the huge question marks in goal. Cam Ward and Roloson? Hockey Jebus help us.

One cool thing though...

Missing blueliner Shea Weber for the next three games because of a suspension, Team Canada's defence needs reinforcements at the World Championship and that help will be coming in the person of Calgary Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf.

Phaneuf, 22, is coming off a strong sophomore season in the NHL in which he recorded 50 points and was plus-10 in 79 games.

He had one point and was minus-4 in the Flames' first-round playoff loss to Detroit. The Edmonton native initially declined an invitation due to an injury which has since healed.

Phaneuf won a gold medal with Canada in 2005 at the World Junior Hockey Championships.
Not bad for a backup plan. :D

For tomorrows game against Slovakia I'm going to probably watch most of it from work on tsnbroadband. First I'm going to check that the Fortilog is disabled. ;)

I saw Canada's games, and I was slightly surprised by their performance. Germany and Norway aren't exactly the best teams, but they put up a good fight. I'm curious to see how Canada will play against Slovakia.

Today's main match for me is Finland - Russia, and despite being Finnish I can't say I have much faith. Russia has probably the best team of the tournament. And they scored 17 goals combined in their last two games. Good thing I'm not overtly patriotic.

USA has also played some impressive hockey, though not sure will it be enough against Czech.

NHL releases list of trophy finalists
Canadian Press

5/1/2007 4:02:39 PM

(CP) - Sidney Crosby is in the running for a rare NHL triple.

The star Pittsburgh Penguins centre has already won the Art Ross Trophy as scoring champion, and the league announced Tuesday that he's a finalist for the Hart Memorial Trophy as MVP and for the Lester B. Pearson Award as most outstanding player in the eyes of his peers.

The Pearson is the newest of the three, having been introduced by the NHL Players' Association in 1971, and only six players can boast of a Ross-Hart-Pearson sweep: Martin St. Louis, Jaromir Jagr, Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky, who did it five times, Guy Lafleur and Phil Esposito.

Goaltenders Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils and Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks are the other Hart finalists.

Luongo is also up for the Pearson and for the Vezina Trophy as top goalie, while Brodeur also is a Vezina finalist.

The other Pearson finalist is Vincent Lecavalier of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

For the first time since the inception of the NHL awards TV special in 1983, there are more than the traditional three finalists for a league trophy because there was a third-place tie between 2006 winner Miikka Kiprusoff of the Calgary Flames and Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers in Vezina balloting by the 30 league GMs.

The James Norris Memorial Trophy for best defenceman will go to Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom for the second year in a row and fifth time overall, or to one of Anaheim teammates Chris Pronger or Scott Niedermayer for a second time.

Buffalo's Lindy Ruff, Pittsburgh's Michel Therrien and Vancouver's Alain Vigneault are the finalists for coach of the year.

Pittsburgh teammates Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal and Colorado's Paul Stastny have been nominated for the Calder Trophy as top rookie.

The Frank J. Selke Trophy for best defensive forward will go to Carolina's Rod Brind'Amour, Anaheim's Samuel Pahlsson or New Jersey's Jay Pandolfo. Brind'Amour won it last year.

Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk, Colorado's Joe Sakic or Tampa Bay's St. Louis will get the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for most gentlemanly player.

Winners will be announced during the June 14 televised awards special in Toronto.

All voting took place at the conclusion of the regular season. Members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association vote on the Hart, Norris, Calder, Byng and Selke, while members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association vote on the Adams.

The 19-year-old Crosby became the youngest player in major sports history to win a scoring title with 36 goals and 84 assists for 120 points.

The last three Hart winners also were scoring champions in the same year - Peter Forsberg, then with Colorado, in 2003, St. Louis in 2004 and San Jose's Joe Thornton in 2006.

Goalies don't often win the Hart. Colorado's Jose Theodore got it in 2002 when he was with Montreal and Detroit's Dominik Hasek took it home in 1997 and 1998 as a member of the Buffalo Sabres. To discover who was the previous netminder to win it, one has to scan the record book all the back to 1962 for the name of Montreal's Jacques Plante.

That said, Luongo and Brodeur both have strong cases. They were work horses who rarely took a night off, and one of them will wind up with the Vezina.

Brodeur had a league-best 48 wins, a .922 save percentage, a 2.18 GAA and a career-high 12 shutouts. Luongo was second in wins with 47, and he was fourth in save percentage (.921) and sixth in goals-against average (2.29).

The Pearson also is an elusive prize for a goaltender. Only two, Hasek in those two big seasons in the 1990s, and Mike Liut, way back in 1981. So, it'll probably go to Crosby or Lecavalier, who led the league with 52 goals.

The Norris competition features three men any team would love to have to man the blue-lines.

Lidstrom's plus-40 rating was tops among all defencemen, his 27 minutes 29 seconds average ice time was third in the league, and his 62 points were fifth-best among D-men. Niedermayer's 27:30 average ice time was second and he led all defencemen in scoring with career highs in assists (54) and points (69). Pronger's chances of winning the trophy might be diminished because he missed 16 games.

Picking a coach of the year is always tough.

Ruff won the Adams last year and just led the Sabres to their first No. 1 finish; the Canucks, with Vigneault behind their bench, posted a franchise-record 49 victories and had the league's best record after Christmas; and Therrien's Penguins showed a 47-point improvement, which was fourth-highest in league history. Malkin's stats make him a favourite to win the Calder. The Russian centre led all rookies in goals (33), power-play goals (16), assists (52) and points (85). He became the first player in 89 years to score goals in each of his first six NHL games.

Staal tied for second among rookies in goals (29) and set a rookie record with seven short-handed goals. On Feb. 10 in Toronto, he became the youngest player to get three goals in a game. His plus-16 rating led the Penguins and tied for second among all first-year players.

Stastny had the second-best points total (78) and tied for the rookie lead in winning goals. He set a rookie record with a 20-game point streak.

While Brind'Amour is in the running for a second straight Selke Trophy, Pahlsson and Pandolfo are first-time finalists.

In Byng balloting, Sakic, the 2001 winner, is due a return to the stage after finishing seventh in the NHL in scoring with 100 points. Colorado's captain joined Gordie Howe as the only players to reach the century mark at 37 or older. Howe was 40 when he amassed 103 points in 1968-69.

Datsyuk, who won last year, led Detroit with 87 points while taking only 20 minutes in penalties. St. Louis was fifth in league scoring with 102 points, led all forwards in average ice time (24:09) and was assessed 28 minutes in penalties.

Predictions:
Hart: Luongo
Lester B: Crosby
Vezina: Brodeur
Norris: Lidstrom
Selke: Pahlsson
Byng: Sakic
Calder: Malkin
Jack Adam: Vigneault

There is nothing more retarded then a goalie winning the Hart but not the Vezina. So you're the MVP but not the best goalie? If Brodeur or Luongo win the Hart, that person should get the Vezina also.

Predictions:
Hart-Brodeur
Lester B.-Crosby
Vezina-Brodeur
Norris-Lidstrom
Selke-Pandolfo
Byng-Sakic
Calder-Malkin
Coach-THerrien(should've been Nolan)

thank god cowan's out, i was starting to get worried that our players had been replaced by some superhuman pod-people which were impervious and invulnerable to injury and pain. finally one of our players got injured, alluding to the proof that the canucks are, in fact, simply human, and that even someone on this team can theoretically get injured

Yea. When we beat the Ducks last year, all I could hear on Whyte Ave was "**** THE DUCKS". I guess that can be used by the fans of whichever team wins this series.

Probably not the smartest idea for Vancouver fans to find words that rhyme with "ducks" since Anaheim fans (lol) can just throw it right back at them (e.g. "Can-suck").

Hart: Crosby
Lester B: Lecavalier
Vezina: Luongo
Norris: Lidstrom
Selke: Brind'Amour
Byng: Sakic
Calder: Malkin
Jack Adam: Ruff (ugh)

I'm one of those guys who thinks a goalie should get the Hart only when he is clearly the best player in the league. Basically, he needs to be shitting fire and shooting laser beams out of his eyes for 70 games. Crosby is IMO the best player in hockey right now, maybe a tiny bit second to Lecavalier (who will get the nod from his peers since they've seen him do it for a few years now).
