Official Patapon (PSP) LOVE Thread

For those people having trouble getting to Fever mode the first time you need to use the Rain Ju-ju, rather than moving (PATA-PATA-PATA-PON) at the start of the mission, defend (CHAKA-CHAKA-PATA-PON). You can get to Fever without moving and you won't trigger anything.

You know I'd have paid the $20 just for the mini-game merry-go-round (Er... that's carousel to you guys, right?). They're all amazing... although the farming mini-game is a little awkward when you're timing the catch(es).

My only complaint about it is the way that it handles the birthing. Really it should keep a record of what you've done so that you only need to experiment once (Same way as it's handled in Jeanne D'Arc) and then you know what you'll create along with the stats etc.

I do have a question. I know what to do with the cabbage, but the last time I did the farming game I got a couple of blood carrots... which I'd have expected to be able to use in the cooking mini-game, but apparently not. Where do the higher level foods get used (I've seen pumpkin also, but didn't manage to catch it) - just for the Patapon that require a foodstuff for birthing?

Also, don't use cabbage for birthing. You can, but it's a complete waste.

For some reason this game induces a kind of bloodlust/kill fever in me that extends to other games like Resistance online, I just wanted to kill everything that moves in gb last night.

These patapons are like the biggest fucking fanatical, militaristic parasites to ever grace videogames and I wuv dem.

I played the demo, continued from its save, and mistakenly re-fought that boss 2nd time. But I didn't have to. I know I didn't have to because I could have fought him over and over again, and it's level just increases. Its level is printed on the mission select screen, right next to the boss description. However, you can progress the story without fighting him again. There must be another level that you can select or something else where you can go. I forgot what I had to do, but whatever it was, I only noticed that after fighting him again.

Oni Jazar mentioned it in the spoilered text below.

After the demo ends you need to go to the first hunting level again and get the compass by hitting the drum beats that is displayed in a totem pole in the beginning of the level. Hit the beat that is displayed over and over until you get the item

Right, that's exactly what I did the first time. It then
opens up another level with a second boss (red fire-breathing creature)
. I beat that guy, but it still wouldn't let me progress until I refought the first boss and defeated him again.

Also (and this addresses Marconelly's comment above), when I loaded up the full game and I'm saying it forces me to refight the boss, there is no indication of the boss's level on the map screen. After I beat the second boss and went back to the map screen, it indicated "Level 2" for the second boss, but still didn't indicate a level for the first boss. When I finally beat the first boss again, and went back to the map screen, it showed "Level 3" for the first boss. At no point did it ever display "Level 2" for that particular boss. That's why I figured the game save was glitched.

Since I've restarted, it looks like I'm on the same broken (glitched?) path. I have to refight the first boss, and there's no indication of the boss's level on the map screen, but it's noticeably more difficult anyway.

I like this game a lot.

Is there a way to retire to kick out a normal patapon from a unit to replace it with a more powerful one without killing it?

In the equip screen, select is marked as 'Quit'. I'm assuming that's a poor translation, because it means 'Retire'. :)

Same here, no problems after the first time.

Maybe it's a glitch, but just beat him again and keep playing the missions like Oni Jazar suggested. You won't have to beat him over and over again for sure, the missions will keep going and the correct level for that boss will be displayed (as you noticed, Lv.3 will be there)

Yeah, that's what confused me as well.

I've gotten pretty far, and it is really fun fighting the bosses again after you upgrade your troops.

The part I cannot get is to master the Armorcrafter mini game. It is driving me crazy!

?? Is this in the US version? Because in the European version SELECT: Retire.

Useable as a meat-alternative for a certain patapon, i think tatepon. All I know is it won't work for atleast one type of meat required patapon.

carrot = tender
pumpkin = succulent probs.

Anyone annoyed that there is a serious lack of monies? The only way I know of that gets a decent amount (like 200-250) is the early desert hunting ground where that money plant grows.

ok i'm kinda annoyed - when do I get the blacksmith? I'm 14 hours into the game and theres only 3 story picture blocks left. Did I miss him somewhere? if so, where?

edit: nevermind

Wow I finally tried the desert level, was wondering what was so tough. The everything started burning, I panicked, lost my fever, and that was the end. :(

I've been saving my money by not upgrading unless it's necessary. So far I've got around 6,000 Ka-ching. Although I'm kind of stuck in that starry star level with Gong so maybe it's time to upgrade some of my troops.

What? When you beat
Majidonga, the red dragon thing
, you should have in your inventory a key item: the miracle drum (the one that goes "DON" when you press X). Then you go to the first hunting mission and go to the totem pole and keep pressing chaka pon chaka pon until you get the rain miracle. I think the priestess tells you that there's something there.

Hmm, still a bit stuck with the Star mission! I stuffed it up the first time I ran through and now it's always raining there - who can I kill to make it stop raining so I can try again? or will it just randomly stop raining there if I keep checking back?

<slaps self>

I didn't realize you could use better quality goods for higher quality units! ARGH! That's why I get for skipping the instructions. Now I wanna start over! :D

No need to restart, just retire some of your base units and buy better ones.

BTW, this PSP is fucking awesome. Finally picked it up yesterday and I love it.

Any pointers on the mission after the Windmill level?
(The one where you have to break through three layers of rock to reach the caged Patapon, then you have to fight the Zatapons)

Just take all your toughest guys, I alternated between the marching beat when my guys were off-screen to keep my fever up and then changed to the attacking beat when my guys were on-screen to smash rocks, then smash the cage, then rescue the patapon.

I can get to the caged patapon no problem, but taking care of the zatapons is a different problem all together. I tried using the wind juju to make their range weapons less effective but it didn't last too long.

Yeah, a lot of places where you need miracles you might need to bust it out once or twice. As soon as the wind drops do the miracle again, or just get up so close that the wind doesn't have as much impact.

Dont worry about dropping Fever to bust out miracles, pay close attention to the beat after the miracle, be accurate and you should be able to get Fever back in only 3 beat/bars instead of 10. I think 3 is the minimum, I dont recall going into Fever with any less than 3.

I think I had yumipons, a dekapon, and tatepons. Deka and tate's would keep the crazy guy busy (sort of) and the yumi would take out the z yumi's while the wind miracle was active. I had to do the wind juju maybe 2-3 times. But yeah, I sorta just tanked it as best I could and won.

My strategy is to pull back and lure Gong away from his henchmen. That way I can finish him off first before dealing with the rest of the calvary. So far I never managed to finish him off though (he just ran away) so I keep resetting and resetting hoping he'd die and leave me his scythe. :D

On that note, what's that thing that the prisoner left behind when you set him free? I could never obtained it because Gong and his stupid army always managed to block my way.

Yeah, keep trying until you get the scythe. It owns. The hat is pretty useless unless you have a level 2 (black and white) patapon.

You know, now that I've beaten the game,
I wish I could replay story missions just because with all the new kickass gear I'm getting, I wish I could see how bad I would have demolished all those pathetic zigatons, muahahahahaa

I let my three-year-old play the game.

It was funny to see the Patapons freaked out ("Eep, I just wet myself", "Huh ? Are you joking ?", "Creppies, Terrible !", "Keep your cool Patapons !" etc). It looks like some of them fainted too. I wish they added more lines.

Guys please help me... it's like a curse now.
Saturday i bought a PSP just for this one, and after finding out that the PS Network doesn't work with Mac, now in the office i always get an error code while trying to download the demo (always when it's at 3%)... any idea?
Shit i'm pissed.

First of all, the impressions (not like an official thread is good for them, boourns official threads on that front :) ):

Anyhow, loving the game. IMO, best game on PSP, and the best Sony published game I've played in a long time.

That said, I think I'm missing something (Warning: REALLY VAGUE SPOILERS AHEAD): I've got a tree and a mountain (and a chef), and it looks like there should be something in between them, but I don't have it.. where'd I miss out? Or is this normal?

EDIT: Also not getting a feel for what makes a good Patapon other than better raw materials.. but I couldn't say if the ones I'm creating are worth creating or not.

What? You can download the demo via other means, doesn't have to be straight from the PSN client. Just the actual data files put into the correct folders will work, as will connecting to a PS3.

don't have a PS3 and no.. the actual data files do NOT work if you just put them on the memory stick (tried it yesterday, a friend passed me the demo on my mac thru MSN): when you try to load the application a message comes out saying you don't have the rights to run it -because you bypassed the PSN Installer i guess-

:(

Any help?

That's probably because he sent you his files from the PSN demo, which are tied to his account. You need to get the UMD demo files.

You miss out the Flower minigame. You can get it from one of the hunting stages. You must kill one of the motitis-lookalike which turns into beetle-like creature.

US version yeah. I import everything, but even if I didn't I'd have imported this rather than pay double for the EU version.

I tried again with the GOW demo, and i still get the error 80029563. :'(

I know this solution sounds ridiculous if you just want to get demo from PSN. However, if you consider it as a way for you to get access to PC, why don't you install Parallel or Boot Camp on your Mac (assuming you're running OSX)? Then install a Windows XP on Parallel so you can have access to 'PC' on your Mac. I use Parallel at work on daily basis because I need to test website so they'd run properly on IE6 and I find it pretty useful to have.

What's the easiest way to find Hinoki or Super Ceder wood?

mdk7, you should try installing from another PC, maybe from some other PC in the office. Or try formatting the memory stick using the format option from PSP's system menu.

Lots of money to be found on the Seaching For Lucky Star Hunting mission. Approx 700 per hunt, but you need to know what to do, you need to free the little flying star guy and he gives you money. It's a bit convoluted to explain (but easy to pull off) so try reading one of the FAQs.

link to one of these faqs?

I tried 6 times last night, including having my guys die, but the rain won't stop and I can't get the star to show up again. It's so frustrating

thanks guys, i did not solve my problems but i eventually managed to update the firmware to 3.90 and download the Space Invaders Extreme demo... I'll try to find another pc later... i NEED some Patapon! ^^

Oh and BTW: is there a problem if i try to download the US demo of the game (and GOW too...) with a US account even if i'm from Italy?

No. You can play the US demo but the Spear of Protection won't be transferred into the actual game unless you buy US version of Patapon. If you want the Spear of Protection and you're planning to buy the European version then get the demo from the European store. The European demo is shorter than the US demo but it still gives you Spear of Protection. Don't think that's all there is to it to the game though because the European demo only scratch the basic of the game and does not even show the kind of customization that you can do in this game.

Even the FAQ I read is a bit confusing but I did it. SAO heer's the mini-FAQ for the confusing but very useful "Searching For the Lucky Star" mission:

- First time you enter that level, it's always raining.

- Play the level and let one Patapon die (maybe unequip stuff from him before the mission starts so he dies easier)

- Finish the level as if nothing happened

- Re-visit the level. There won't be any rain there, due to your sacrifice, and you will see an animal that transforms into a flying creature when your weapons first hit it. By killing it, you will set free the little flying star guy who will literally shower you with the money. Just keep slowly following him as he goes along (wait every few turns so that you don't go ahead of him), and collect the money he drops. There will be approx 750 kachings there. he will also leave you an artifact that will open another (pretty tough) boss level.

- While starting to battle the creature that drops the little star, you'll see a black bird with gold markings sleeping next to it. To kill this bird, you need to unequip all the fire weapons before you enter this level, and replace them with strongest non-fire weapons you have. To make sure to kill this bird, reach the Fever before you get too close to the bird, and just attack it from a far with fever, you'll kill it with one shot. The bird leaves the 'Mystery Meat' (Jonnyram loves navigating it, I hear). You can also get the Mystery Meat by killing the crab on the previous hunting level (The Swamp). You can easily kill this golden bird and the creature at the same round, bird falls down in one attack if you have built up the fever before attacking it. Remember, you can build up fever by standing in place, using the defense /\ /\ [] O sequence.

- You can revisit this level any time you want and you'll get these same two creatures to fight, as long as it's not raining! Raining on this level becomes random after the first time you free the Star, so just keep your eye on it. you can clearly tell when it's not raining on the mission select screen, so just do other missions until the weather clears up there. Second time you free the Star, he will give you the Blacksmith minigame (used to create alloys that you can use to create Dekapons), and he will also leave the usual ~750 kachings. Every next time you only get the money for freeing him.

- If you visit this level while it's raining, you battle the crab that leaves alloys behind.

Here's a good FAQ:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/psp/file/942065/51864

You don't have to sacrifice any patapons if you don't want. It will switch to not raining all by itself eventually. I just replaced all of my gimpy Yaripons with Mogyoon Yaripons.

to all people having difficulty with the Medeen level... DO NOT equip the divine stew. It gives all of your patapons fire based attacks.

I don't know if the rain would stop the first time unless you do a sacrifice (it's not a real sacrifice either, you just resurrect him after the level is complete). I know it switches to not raining randomly later on.

I just replaced all of my gimpy Yaripons with Mogyoon Yaripons.

I can't wait to do that. I only have three Mogyoons in my army so far, but their stats are so much above others.

Start by watching some videos. Or download the demo. It's a rhythm based action/strategy game basically.

Or what webrunner said below. It's really true.

It didn't occur to me beforehand because I've been too busy with grinding, getting items from minigame, etc but the musics that are used in some of the stages are really awesome once you mixed them with your drum.

My favorite is probably the Yodelling song....or at least that's what I call it. :D It's the one with Gaeen
(the first giant robot you encountered)
as the enemy.
