Official Patapon (PSP) LOVE Thread

Anyway, I got to the castle, with the catapult and still got owned :lol Can't wait to try again. This game gets better and better. Much more strategic and challenging without feeling overwhelming. I love seeing a full screen of arrows and spears during fever mode.

strategy:
archers, spearmen, swordsmen, wind miracle. Park out of enemy range of the tower and get the wind miracle going so the catapult shot will travel far enough to nail the castle elements. Meanwhile, use defensive stance so that your spearmen will nail the enemy spear/archer guys to your immediate front. The wind miracle will also be keeping their projectiles off of your delicate catapult.

I have problems creating rain too. I always fail on that screen that has a flaming drum segment. I keep pressing X in the rhythm (I'm almost 100% sure I do) but it just fails there. Now I read above that you're supposed to use [] (Pata) drum as well during this sequence? Is that where I use it? For that flaming part?

On that note, apparently in the US version of the game, kiseki (miracle) is referred to as 'Juju'. I thought that's kind of weird.
JuJu is a slang for magic, coming from the voodoo terminology I think. I absolutely love the translation work in this game, it elevates the feel of the game that much higher.

Stop pressing X.

You press X the first five times (Don DoDon DoDon) after entering fever, but that is IT.

After you enter the JuJumode, you want to repeat back the Patapons' rhythym. Forthe rain one, I believe it is the following:

Pon Pon Pon (x2)

Pon Pon PoPon (x2)

PoPon Pon Pon (x2)

Pon Pon PoPoPon

PoPoPataPoPoPon

Yes, sorry, that's what I meant. After initiating the sequence, I kept pressing O all the time - I guess I didn't notice that I was supposed to do Pata on that last one. I tried pressing O really fast in that sequence, then tried pressing and holding it during the flaming indicator. The flame got me confused there, I wasn't even paying attention that they switched to a different drum there.

One thing I've noticed with the long sequence is the time after the last beat and before you need to actually start repeating it yourself is shorter than the regular lines.

It is the same thing with the wind miracle when you get the pon-pon-pon up front, then the next line is pon-pata-pon

I totally agree. It IS a great translation. There are already moments that make me laugh, and moments that made me sad (kind of like how Shadows of the Collossus makes you really questions what you are doing). There are mystery elements and great personalities (I think Meden is not as smart as she lets on...).

Because of the type gameplay, this game really doesn't need a good story or a great translation. I'm glad they went the extra mile.

Regarding the strategy you outlined above:
Am I supposed to have the wind miracle by now? I never even noticed where I could get it...

I wish they wouldn't keep forcing you to do the miracle minigame every time. Once time should be enough IMO then every subsequent time the miracle should just activate when you do the JUJU drums. Otherwise it really messes up with the pacing IMO.

This game is really HARD! Every boss is a big challenge.

I get the same feeling of sadness. It sometimes feels like I'm destroying the whole planet with my ever-growing plague of cute soldiers.

Wow, I just got pwned by the desert. :O

It's hard to remember the miracle because I'm switching between so many tunes beforehand.

I think you get it from in the World of Ooze level, after you finish the mission there. One of the monsters has the item and it's those gold bird bastards. So get into fever right away. The gold ones go out like a light (only have about 20 or so hp) but they detect farther then the other birds and run further ahead if you fail.

Edit:

The only thing I hate about miracles is it takes you out of fever no matter what. Toke me a few hours before I realized that.

Oh my god, I'm such an idiot. I kept fighting a level 3 dino over and over again and kept getting him to level up every time I beat him, wondering why I wasn't progressing in the story. Turns out I needed to play the map 1 square before the endless boss battle one to actually play through the story.

I never used the Pata and still was able to make it rain.

So I just got the defense song and does it actually do anything, it seems like my guys behave just like I used the attack song?

They stop advancing, put their shields up and take less damage.

Only your Tatepons will actually defend using their shields. Use them to guard your other Patapons.

I just finished the desert, but this makes me hope there is an A-Bomb miracle dance!

This game is awesome!

Spears will throw in the front of the Tatepon and the Tatepon will take less damage from attacks. Also, when they're defending, Kibapon(horsemen) can't plow through and your formation goes back to normal.
Before you get the retreat song, you'll use this to pull back your people if they're too far ahead.

Alphahawk said:

It makes your army fortify around your flag and it doubles or triples the defense rating of Tatepons, the little axe-wielding guys. It also decreases your damage output by a huge margin. Using the defense and attack chants properly is critical to survival.

Edit: Since Sphinx answered my question I'll ask another, does ordering the patapon to directly attack an enemy do greater damage than just using using your defense song or what's up with that?

When looking at the stuff going on at your screen, isn't this obvious?;)

I got it now, I think I was missing the beat a bit too before. Made the rain, but lost the fever somewhere after making the 2nd rain, and the Patapons all burned before I was able to fever them again :(

Crap, can that snail even be killed or was I wasting time? I hit him with everything I have during the fever, and for several minutes, but he still lives.

I think you CAN kill him, but it is easier just to beat him when you come back to the level later.

that stupid song won't get out of my head.

i had to take sleeping pills last night. ill never touch that game ever, again screw this game and loco roco.

Anyone know how to get Fever mode early?

I've done a few times (like at Combo 3) but don't know how.

If you hit the notes perfect and are at Combo 2 or higher it goes straight to Fever.

You can tell if you're doing it right by how loud the notes sound.

Gong the Hawkeye spoilers:
I killed him and he dropped his scythe instead of that stupid hat of his. It has insane damage. Nice.

Been playing the first levels over and over just to get the hang of it. Had to learn when to charge/reconstitute the forces and when to attack and how to keep the FEVER! going before I got too far into the campaign.

Now I'm moving on. Got my Chakka drum and went through the first dino/dragon with little problem. Saved all caps.

Onward!

This game is soooooooo good.

Awesome! Which mission did you do that on. The first or second time you fight him? Or is there more?

The last time you fight him ( I forget how many times that was...3?)
My Diablo run tendencies are coming out again and I am doing missions over and over again to see if I can get any good drops.

Funny thing about the Gong drop was that I haven't been able to get anything good from the other Zigoton unique soldiers (just their hats).

I got the game yesterday, but unfortunately I'm not quite feelin' the LOVE.

I played the demo and enjoyed it. The demo was mostly a breeze until the last battle against the boss. All I had left at the end of the boss battle (big creature who rears back and breathes fire) was the Hatapon and one Yumipon, but I managed to survive it and saved my game.

When I got the game yesterday, I was eager to pick up where the demo left off. Surprisingly, I had two choices: hunting, or fighting the same boss from the demo. I was hoping I'd be presented with a new level. I had no problem with the hunting, but the boss battle was a nightmare. I tried at least 6 or 7 times and got slaughtered every time. I've tried very hard, but no matter what I did, it proved ineffective. I've had Fever going for a good 20 or so successive drum patterns and still couldn't topple him.

Eventually, after one of the hunting missions, I went back to the map and it opened another boss battle. This boss was not vastly different from the first one (similar fire-breathing attack), and I was able to beat him without too much trouble. I went back to the map, figured I must have unlocked more "regular" levels by now. Nope, I've only got three choices: hunting, the first boss, or the second boss.

I even decided that I wouldn't save my game here, and instead rebooted the PSP and repeated the boss battle. I still got the same result at the conclusion. I tried again, and saved this time, but I can't break the cycle. It seems like I'm stuck repeating these levels.

So, I figure one of two things has happened:

1. I'm playing the game completely wrong and missing something obvious.

2. I've got a bugged game (or more likely a save file) and have to start over.

For those of you who played through the demo and resumed your save game: Is this what is supposed to happen? If so, then is there a way out of the cycle? If not, then perhaps I'll trash my save file and play it again from the beginning...but should I restart from the demo disc (so I can get the Spear of Protection), or from the full game?

I started the regular game from my demo save. I didn't run into any problems.

Go to the village and talk to the priestess to see what she says to do next.

I had the same problem you did. Turns out bosses level up each time you replay them. There'll be a number next to the name of the stage showing what level they are.

I found myself whistling the parts of the wind and rain miracles, followed soon after with foot tapping of Pon-Pata-Pon-Pata.

how the fuck am I supposed to beat zaknel. went against him twice with full armies, it's like he has infinite hp. is there any way to tell how much bosses have left?

Kagari said:
How do I equip the bonus spear from the demo?

I was having the same problem. It should be in your inventory. Just select the soldier you want to equip with it and follow the onscreen prompts. I don't know if it's just for the Spear of Protection or what, but for some reason it would never auto-equip it when I would choose the Optimize option.

So I'm trying to do "Secret Juju at Lostdon, and the boss is driving me fucking insane. Everytime I tell my fucking Patapon to defend, they refuse to pull back and my awesome red guys get eaten. What the fuck, why won't they fucking listen to me?

Oni Jazar said:

Maybe.

Anyway, I finally progressed after I beat the first boss for the second time. But what bothers me is that I already beat him on the demo, and it saved my progress (I had the Spear of Protection)--why did I have to fight him again?

For anyone here who completed the demo--were you also required to fight that boss a second time? If I started my game fresh from the final disc (not the demo), would I have had to fight him twice, or only once?

It's really annoying because the boss appeared to be vastly more difficult the second time around--I must've had to fight him 10 or more times before I succeeded. I know the bosses are supposed to be tougher on subsequent battles, but this is ridiculous. The difficulty spike here is so severe that I'd imagine most casual gamers would get frustrated and give up.

Speaking of difficulty spikes, it looks like I've encountered another one. I've already got the Don drum (the X button) and I'm now being asked to tap out the pattern "X-XX-XX" when the Patapons are in Fever mode. The problem here is that it's not apparent what the timing is supposed to be for "X-XX-XX". I've tried the following phrases, all with failed results:

Beat 1: X
Beat 2: XX (rapidly)
Beat 3: XX (rapidly)

Beat 1: X
Beat 2: (pause)
Beat 3: XX (rapidly)
Beat 4: (pause)
Beat 5: XX (rapidly)

Beat 1: X
Beat 2: (pause)
Beat 3: X
Beat 4: X
Beat 5: (pause)
Beat 6: X
Beat 7: X

I'm not sure which (if any) of these is correct. I tend to fail it around the second beat, so I'm not even given any clues as to whether I'm on the right track. I had better success figuring out Brutalities on Mortal Kombat Trilogy than I am having here.

This wouldn't be so bad, except that you have to get the Patapons to Fever before you can get the opportunity to attempt X-XX-XX. So, when you fail, you've got to work other drum patterns for 5-10 measures to get to Fever just so you can try X-XX-XX again. It's quite tedious.

It would've been much better if there was a multi-part tutorial that started by allowing you to practice the timing for X-XX-XX on its own (without requiring you to work back up to Fever first). Then, once you've mastered that, you can try it "for real" by attaining Fever and then tapping out the X-XX-XX pattern.

OH MY GOD I WANT TO FUCKING QUIT!

How the hell can you miss a mini-game? I don't have the damn flower game! I don't want to restart since I am so far but that just screwed up everything. I knew I shouldn't have took a look at a FAQ.

Does this game have a new game plus or something? I don't want to have to start all over again.

How to do the Rain Miracle/Juju

1. Reach Fever.
2. Tap X-XX-XX (DON DON-DON DON-DON) in a calm manner as soon as the song that indicates Fever starts.
3. You'll enter a rain miracle mini game. This is easy. Just relax and tap O (yes, O not X since you're supposed to do PON not DON)
4. Read and understand the sequence first before you commit them. The order are:

PON---PON---PON
PON---PON---PON
PON---PON---PON PON
PON---PON---PON PON
PON PON---PON---PON
PON PON---PON---PON
PON---PON---PON PON PON
PON PON PATA PON PON PON PON

Note: --- = the space in between the presses.

That's it. It's easy if you're calm, read the prompt first before committing to it.

How to fight Zaknel (the Earthworm)

I mostly just used attack and only defend when he started spewing his fire or trashing around. He went out quickly and dropped some nice items.

The Flower Game

I got this game once you got the gardener Patapon (IIRC, you must get the farmer hat to get the mini game. The problem is, I can't remember where you get it from, the 2nd Dino or after the uh....3rd or 4th battle with the Zigotons.

What I still don't understand about this game is how to play it. I haven't been able to catch those vegetables.

Go to the second hunting stage (the one in the desert), do a rain dance and you'll see a purple snail, kill it and it will give up the farmer's hat

I'm still not 100% on how to catch the vegetables, I've caught them but I don't know what I did

It's on mission 8, I am on number 22! All I want to know is if the game has a new game +/clear game can do whatever you want mode?

Probably doesn't matter because I am restarting as I type this. Can't get stews without that mini-game until the very end.

Go to the second hunting stage (the one in the desert), do a rain dance and you'll see a purple snail, kill it and it will give up the farmer's hat
If you aren't right I will cut off your toes.

edit: It seems your toes are safe. Was going to slam my PSP across the wall if I had to do all that again. Escort missions and castle sieges aren't as awesome as the rest.
