Official PR: Xbox 360 Arcade announced + more

Ok, so, this comes out now? That's awesome because I was planning to finally dive into the 360 world for my birthday next month.

HOWEVER!

I'm still insanely cautious about the failure rate on 360s. Will these Arcade units be "safe" or is basically every SKU a red-ringed gamble?

You should be fine. I'm going to get another 360, (giving my current one to my daughters) and the stability of them have improved. I've check out a few friends that have recently purchased their's. Jump in, you'll enjoy it.

Er, why in the hell would anyone need to have the Nick shows available from that service? Not only are they on all the time across three channels if you have a regular digital cable service, but they are also available from cable on demand services.

why have movies or tv shows anyways. they are on tv all the time too!

In N America the Arcade is a direct replacement for the Core SKU, coming it at the same price point. However in the UK we'll be expected to pay £20 more for the Arcade once it arrives.
After months of dilly-dallying Microsoft has whisked the wraps off its new hard-disk-deprived Arcade Xbox 360 bundle, which will go on sale this Friday for GBP 199.99 (EUR 289).

Remove the cheapest SKU and replace it with a more expensive one...? At £179 the Arcade would have done some good business, being the same price as the Wii. Hey ho

Edit: Just noticed, Play.com are doing the Premium for £199 again.

Interesting bit from an interview with Next-Gen...

I'll believe it when I see it, but this would be a very smart move.
I was just about to post that article. I hope it gets a good push on TV, but I doubt it.

Another interesting comment:

Of course, Microsoft’s holiday strategy doesn’t lie solely on the new Arcade SKU. Greenberg wouldn’t disclose what percentage of total Xbox hardware shipments would be the Arcade pack, but expects that the new model will perform “at or above” the level of the $450 Xbox 360 Elite, possibly second to the $350 20GB Xbox 360.
That's quite the turnaround from the Core.

I just asked my girl to get this SKU for me for christmas.. i allready have a HDD from my last xbox... Last Effect and Uncharted are my 2 holidays games to play:D

It seems like Microsoft is starting to get really serious about attracting the younger demographic.
- Disney/Nickelodeon on Video Marketplace
- Spongebob & Shrek on XBLA
- Viva Pinata Party Animals with the Burger King happy meal tie-in
- Scene It
- Cheap SKU with 5 casual pack-in games
- creation of the "Platinum Family Hits" line (Cars, Kameo, Lego SW2, Table Tennis, Sonic, Viva, etc)
Will be interesting to see if this helps them out or what.
That is definitely the plan. It won't have much of an adverse affect on the Wii but for families with a dad or teen that also wants some hardcore shooter or sports gaming, this makes the 360 a good dual-purpose machine . . . family & hardcroe gaming.

I'm glad to hear this. I wasn't expecting them to be pushing it on the level of the Premium, but pushing it at the same level as the Elite is a good start. If the Arcade does well, then they should continue to ramp up the support for it.

I thought they were rolling out Video Marketplace of other countries this fall. Why haven't we heard more on this...grrr.

Really nice to see HDMI on all systems now.

It's interesting that a system not launched with a 'next-gen' update such as HDMI, gets it later at a low cost.

I'm going to get this one.

Total 360's in my home.... 3.

Total bought.... 4.

Total buried.... 1.

360 NPD inflation confirmed.

WB's Video Marketplace support is weird. They have a ton of Hanna Barbera cartoons, a ton of Adult Swim stuff, and now a bunch of Looney Tunes; yet their Cartoon Network content is bare-bones as hell, with only the first seasons of Samurai Jack and Ben 10.

Where's stuff like Justice League, Foster's Home, Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog, etc? Obscure stuff that is rarely aired anymore and will likely never be collected on DVD would be nice too, like Megas XLR and Sheep in the Big City.

I'm thinking of picking one up, £200 is just right for me atm and I can get a HDD later. I'm wondering though, is there a big difference between the performance of a 360 with and without a HDD?

Edit: Fuck that, just seen the Play link above. So bought.

Microsoft is definitely trying to expand their audience this holiday. Take a look at their new commercial airing in the US now. LINK

If MS is going to drop the 360 price they should do it before COD4 comes out. 13 more days and we will know for sure if they are cutting prices this Holiday.

Wrong. Why would COD4 decide MS pricing strategy? Any cut would probably occur around the release of Mass Effect, due to the fact they are marketing it as hard as Gears and its probably going to sell well. Plus Mass Effect/price cut would be a strong boost, right in the middle of holiday shopping season.

That being said I don't expect them to budge on that $50 despite the inherent psychological benefits.

In my opinion one thing MS should look at if they are interested in wooing families is to come up with some sort of family plan for xbox live. We finally broke down and got a 360 for my family but I'm finding it a little offputting to have to buy 3 full live subscriptions if myself and both daughters want to play online with our own profiles. They need to find a way to share a common connection that is unique to a 360 or do something like the phone companies do and be able to add a child account to a parent account for cheaper than purchasing their own subscriptions. Heck, I recently signed up for Gametap and they let my kids play for free on my account.

Yeah three very casual games there.

...
Not talking about the games. Talking about the image they're trying to portray in the commercial. With the song, women and older people playing, etc.

Makes the Core system look ridiculous.

This is good news....so basically you just forgo the ability to download demos. I could recommend this.

Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3

I think they should have thrown in PGR4, Madden and Scene it (yeah, I know....). Putting two fps and an RPG with fps allusions isn't really reaching out to the mainstream.

(Please don't take that as facetiously as it sounds, just look past the cynicism)

It's a pretty good idea to have some good and accessible XBLA games on the SKU, so it gets points for that. Any added content is better than what the skele-Core had to offer. Shame still about the lack of an HDD, but I'd imagine having good Arcade games is a pretty good way to improve the out-of-box experience nevertheless.

Add a HDD and what separates it from the Premium?

Just a HD cable and the pack in games(which I assume will go away after the holidays).

Ok, awesome. November will be X360 month for me. :D

Since I'm a n00b I have one other question though - will it only work with the X360 HDD, or can I plug in any USB HDD to it?

The USB HDD will ONLY work to serve music/pictures to the 360. You cannot do anything else with it.

it will not store demos, downloaded videos, game saves or anything else.

Aww, that's lame. If the HDD is $100 I might as well just get the Premium then, yeah? Or will the memory card hold a decent amount of game saves? (I'm not planning on downloading any demos or TV shows or anything)

Interesting to see Bioshock mixed with two first-party titles.

The Core was ridiculous. The value relative to the Premium was terrible; I think they addressed this with the Arcade pretty well.

Arcade SKU customers won't be interested in the the video marketplace and XBLA titles, if they really not going online (and the Arcade sure isn't designed to out of the box), but the rest of the lineup could drive some appeal. I still think this will be pretty successful this fall, independent of impacting the Wii.

You can get a refurbished 20GB for $60 from EB/Gamestop.

To be honest the 256MB game card will hold saves for just about any game released to date, you might have some trouble with DLC, but you could play Halo, Gears, Dead Rising, etc... just about any game with no problem.

HDD is a must for DLC, but not many games off the shelf require it to work.

Personally i'm going to get an arcade then wait for a bit and pick up the 120GB drive. About the same price as an elite but spreads the cost out a bit which is fine with me. HDMI cable is extremely cheap if you know where to look (monoprice, big lots...)

Yeah, the games I want are Kameo, Viva Pinata, Dead Rising, Blue Dragon, Lost Planet, and prob'ly a few more I can't think of right now, so I think I should be ok. Thanks for the tips guys.

...Though, with a huge list of Wii, DS, PS2, and Xbox games I still have to play/beat/open, who knows when I'll actually touch my 360. :lol Maybe the HDDs will be dirt cheap by the time I get there.

All the games you want are cheap now aside one of them (guess which), so i'd probably jump in right now just to have it.

You can buy harddrive on ebay for cheap too :)

Can we please change Phoenix Downs title to "Console War Masochist".:D
This hurts your December PS3 over 360 predictions.

This is a good thing... much better value for the same amount of money. What's there to complain about?

MS should seriously put a commercial of this on every channel on TV, advertise it like Apple does the iphone and theyd be guaranteed million dollar months from now til december.

What makes you say that? Seems it would be a perfect box to get online with Halo or CoD4.

Out of the box being the operative term there. Of course you can take the Arcade system online, but there's no headset, ethernet cable, or HDD (if you want to do more than a couple of downloads) - out of the box. You can just connect and go online, true, but that's not what the box is aimed at in the same way the Premium is. Note I wasn't saying it's a bad thing, just that it's tailored to those not planning to do much if anything online. I think there's a sizable market there.

It depends on what you deem to be "much if anything online" some might argue that playing games online is a whole hell of a lot

Gotcha, I wasn't aware that it didn't ship with a headset and Ethernet cable.

I'd agree. I rarely download demos (it is cool though) and I never download movies or TV shows, yet I spend 80% of my gaming time online.

Interestingly it seems some retailers in the UK are selling their current inventory of Premiums for £199.

I wonder if they are going to just push the Arcade and Elite this holiday, hitting both demographics.

I wonder how much they will be selling the Arcade for?

Though I have a feeling that MS will limit supply and rely on retailers pushing the Premium instead, given that the 20gb HDD opens the way for £££ through DLC, HD/SD movies, music etc... I know last Christmas I couldn't find a Core anywhere in Cardiff, Premium's were in plentiful stock everywhere though.

Heh - I'm the opposite. I rarely game online, but I do lots of demos, XBLA, videos and chat with people while playing. But then, the Arcade system is not for me. :p

Because although the ERP is £249, that is supposed to allow retailers some bandwidth to make up bundles. Online retailers rarely go by the ERP though, and hence cut it to pre-bundle price to make some quick profits.

For this reason, you will see the Arcade SKU bundled with a game or two in the shops for the ERP of £199, and likely for £179 or less standalone online.
