Smeg...50 dollar mark up for hdmi plus paint?

Edit:

# Halo 3 Special Edition Console
# Halo 3 Special Edition Wireless Controller
# Halo 3 Special Edition 20GB Hard Drive
# Halo 3 Special Edition Wired Headset
# Halo 3 Special Edition Gamer Pics and Theme (Exclusive download via Xbox LIVE)
# Component HD AV Cable
# Ethernet Cable
# HDMI Port
# Play & Charge Kit
# Xbox LIVE Silver Membership
# One-month Xbox LIVE Gold Membership

It has the HDMI port, and also comes with a Play and Charge Kit. Other then that I think it is essentially a painted premium, and I think the controller is also green.

So what does the Halo 360 come with again?

the rumored fourth Xbox 360 turns out to be the Halo 3 Special Edition console, due in September 2007. It'll feature the "Spartan green and gold" finish you see pictured, and ship with matching wireless controller, headset, play and charge kit, 20GB hard drive, HDMI-output plus gamer pics and Halo 3 theme available to download from Xbox LIVE. Pricing hasn't been set yet, and strangely, it won't include Halo 3, which is set to ship on September 25th.

With an HDMI port, yes.
Yeah, it comes with an HDMI port and a play and charge kit (which I assume matches the color scheme of the controller and headset) in addtion to the regular Premium content. I think there's free gamerpics and dashboard theme as well, wheee! That's what you get for $50, and the Halo 3 finish, of course.

Microsoft Lowers Price of Xbox 360 by $50
Price drop coincides with release of “Madden NFL 08” on Xbox 360, one of many titles that make up the greatest holiday lineup in video game history.

REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 6, 2007 — Microsoft Corp. today kicked off the greatest holiday lineup in video game history by announcing it will reduce the estimated retail price (ERP) of Xbox 360™ by $50 (U.S.) beginning Aug. 8. Soon to follow, Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) will release its blockbuster video game title “Madden NFL 08” on Aug. 14. “Madden NFL Football,” one of the most important mass-appeal franchises in video games, was the top-selling game of 2006 and is the top-selling franchise of the past 10 years. Only Xbox 360 offers a console for all interests and budgets.

“The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360,” said Mitch Koch, corporate vice president, Global Retail Sales and Marketing Group, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. “On the eve of the best holiday games lineup ever and the launch of ‘Madden NFL 08,’ there has never been a better time to jump into Xbox 360.”

Xbox 360 will enhance the value of its entire family of consoles beginning on Aug. 8. At a new ERP of $349.99 (U.S.), Xbox 360 offers an unsurpassed experience right out of the box with a 20GB hard drive, wireless controller, Xbox 360 headset, and more. For those looking for the ultimate value and the freedom to customize their console as they see fit, Xbox 360 Core System now has an ERP of $279.99 (U.S.). Xbox 360 Core System provides everything needed to start gaming while giving consumers the ability to add new features and accessories they want. Dressed in black and equipped with a 120GB hard drive, Xbox 360 Elite will be priced at an ERP of $449.99 (U.S.) for those who want the premium games and entertainment experience. In anticipation of this year’s largest blockbuster game launch, the Xbox 360 Halo® 3 Special Edition Console will hit store shelves in September with an ERP of $399.99 (U.S.). Featuring an authentic Spartan green-and-gold finish, this console will include a matching Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 20GB hard drive, Xbox 360 Headset, an Xbox 360 Play and Charge Kit, and more.

In addition to being a great value, Xbox 360 is the only console on which consumers will be able to play all of this year’s biggest titles: “Guitar Hero III™: Legends of Rock” (RedOctane/Activision), “Halo 3” (Bungie Studios), “Madden NFL 08” (EA) and “Rock Band” (MTV Games). Xbox 360 is also home to the most exclusive games, such as “BioShock” (2K Games), “Lost Odyssey™” (Mistwalker and feelplus Inc.), “Blue Dragon” (Mistwalker and feelplus Inc.), “Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action,” (Screenlife), “Project Gotham Racing® 4” (Bizarre Creations Ltd.), “Mass Effect” (BioWare Corp.), “Naruto: Rise of a Ninja” (Ubisoft), and “Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation” (NAMCO BANDAI Games). With a record-setting attach rate of 6.1 games per console sold (NPD, Life-to-date, June 2007), a new price and the greatest holiday games lineup ever, Xbox 360 has proved itself as the home of the best games and entertainment at the best value.

Eww

Good lord they keep pounding that "best holiday lineup ever!" into the ground.

"Hey! We got Madden!"

SO DOES EVERY OTHER PLATFORM IN EXISTENCE.

Pretty poor price drop by Microsoft. The $70 gap between the Core and Premium only further marginalizes that SKU. If they had dropped the price of the HDD to $70 as well, I could understand the reasoning, but the PR does not mention it.

That said, I think this will have a pretty big impact on August NPD sales. I can see sales going up by at least 50%, and much further in September. But I can't help but feel that Microsoft has just given up on one of their major long-term strategies this gen: Get the Core to a price that will drive mass-adoption. The drop is too little too late on that SKU. The Premium and Elites will sell very well this holiday, though.

That is the ugliest god damn thing i've ever seen.

Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for the Xbox 360, said that the price cut had been planned for a long time and is meant to coincide with the Aug. 14 launch of Electronic Arts’ Madden NFL 08 football game.

Rumors of the price cut had leaked from a variety of retail sources. But some thought that Microsoft wouldn’t cut its price in advance of the late-September release of “Halo 3,” which is expected to drive demand for new consoles.

The Xbox 360 Elite console, which features a 120-gigabyte hard disk and HDMI connector, will also be cut from $479 to $449, and the Xbox 360 Core, with no hard disk, will be cut from $299 to $279. The Halo 3 special edition Xbox 360, which comes with a 20-gigabyte hard disk and an HDMI connector, will sell for $399, once it debuts in September. The Halo 3 console will also have an ”authentic Spartan green-and-gold finish,” as well as a matching Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 Headset an Xbox 360 Play and Charge Kit and more.

“We have maintained launch price for 21 months,” Greenberg said. ” That’s the longest on record for any new console. Now we are cutting the price as we think about bringing in those who have an Xbox or PS 2.”

Greenberg said the price move was not a reaction to the Wii and he said the Xbox 360 has a lot of content that can appeal to broader audiences such as the “Scene It?” movie trivia game and the new Guitar Hero III game.

“It’s a little bit of a surprise since the market pressure isn’t there for a price cut,” said Van Baker, an analyst at Gartner. “The PlayStation 3 price cut didn’t really turn out to be a price cut since they will discontinue the price of the cheaper unit.”

Greenberg noted that the HDMI connector, which goes with the motherboard code-named Zephyr, will be used only on the Halo 3 special edition and Xbox 360 Elite consoles for now. (Presumably, they need to ramp up production of these boxes). He declined to comment on whether the boxes coming this fall have any new electronics on the inside. Microsoft and its suppliers are working on 65-nanometer versions of the main processing chips.

Greenberg said that the delay of Grand Theft Auto IV, announced last Friday, will strengthen the appeal of exclusive Xbox 360 titles such as Halo 3. Now the ball is back in Sony’s court. Will it really cut the price of the $600 PS 3? The pressure is

Been in the works for this time for awhile now it seems. Also, it looks like only the Halo 3 Special Edition 360 and the Elite's will have HDMI out for now.

They lost nearly all of it waiting as long as they have........and they're proud of it. **shakes head**
Dumb F***s.
Someone needs to introduce these idiots to a baseball bat and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

How can they claim to have a "leadership position" while being lapped by Wii month-after-month?

The messaging here is really odd.

1) We maintained the launch price longer than any other console!
2) We revised our 2007 fiscal year shipments down from 13-15m to 12m.
3) We still missed that lowered target.

I would not be boasting about keeping the price so high, were I they.

Having the Halo 360 appear to be 'battle-worn' may be the worst design decision possible...
It looks dirty. I don't see how that got approved.

Anyways, if I were Nintendo, I'd respond to this by raising the price of Wii... just to be dicks.
