Official Prince of Persia Thread

While it's great that Gamespot is your "go-to" review destination, feel free to watch the gameplay happen before you on Gametrailers, where they join the admission parade of this game not being for everyone, that it is very easy and is not as developed as one would hope. A question was asked, I answered it and now the answer isn't liked. Oh well. I honestly don't give a fuck what Game$pot says, especially on an Ubisoft game.

A game can get high review scores without being the amazing game everyone needs to play. It simply means the game does what it set out to do in a fun manner, but what it sets out to do isn't for everyone. It's no secret this is a game made for everyone to be able to play and it's no secret that a lot of the challenge is just gone from previous Prince games. One of the reviews said if you put your skills aside and just come along for the ride, you'll have a great time. I'm not looking to spend $60 on a super easy "great time" without my need to master combat b/c doing a combo with Elika will "win every time."

P.S. IGN saying the platforming isn't "automated" is just false. If you watch Gametrailers, it is shown and explained that the Prince will jump off an object safely to the next object for you, for example. This, added with the fact that despite being an "open world" the platforming is extremely linear with 1 way to make it through just doesn't seem interesting enough for $60.

I never said I'm done with this game, and I doubt the others canceling their preorders did, either. It's just not ontop of the list anymore, it can wait.
ah yes, the classic GAF 'Who cares what people who have actually played the game think, I SAW A VIDEO' defense.

i love how you accuse him of having a 'go to review source' when he quotes four different reviews and you only cite one.

All of his criticisms were echoed in some reviews and by people who played it.

and yet the majority of the reviews say that it doesn't matter. he's like a living version of the negareviews a certain blog site do. ignore all the positives, and just obsess over the negatives.

Is it that bad that challenging gameplay is important to people?

Well I'm wondering about the US release, but there's a lot of posts from pissed off Canadians I've read that said when they attempted to pick up the game from EBGames they were told they didn't get any PS3 LEs, just 360. None of the PS3 copies came in the special packaging, but I haven't heard whether they have the same content as the 360 LE.

I was just told that they are gettng the LE version on Friday.

Pfft

Wow, got the controls down and this game has some insane flow. Tomb Raider is very stiff and deliberate, but Prince of Persia is like acrobatics.

It's partly because of the easy controls, and the handholding, but creative level design and a helpful camera really lets you just run through levels without stopping to consider each jump.

Really enjoying it so far.

Well my copy is waiting for me at the gameshop, too bad it's my birthday present, and my birthday isn't untill the 7th :(

it's ridiculous to me that someone would be put off playing a game that is reportedly really fun because it is easy.

there are achievements to go for if you want a challenge that shows the world you didn't die that much. i don't care if a game is easy or hard, i just care if it's fun. if you put 'hard difficulty' before 'good gameplay' that's just a bit mad to me. why not try and balance four golfballs on top of each other or something.

You act like hard difficulty and good gameplay are entirely mutually exclusive concepts.

It should be enough to say that people have different priorities and considering how difficulty affects the gameplay for them should really not be that out there.

i just take difficulty on a game-by-game basis. whether a game is easy or difficult isn't so much as important as whether it's enjoyable. some games need a good difficulty curve to be fun, and some don't. really, if you ask me, the best games never make you think "god, this is just impossibly hard." they're games that lead you in to that difficulty and make sure that you're well-trained and equipped to handle it. not to keep using this example, but resident evil 4 is the first that comes to mind that's great at this.

i'm just saying that the large majority of the reviews are saying 'yeah it's easy but it's still really fun despite that' and this guys reaction is 'FUCK THIS GAME I DON'T PLAY EASY SHIT I AM MR MACHO MAN WHO ONLY PLAYS HARD GAMES' or whatever. difficulty and good gameplay aren't mutually exclusive, but what i don't get is someone who puts difficulty before good gameplay. someone who would say 'sure all the reviews say the game is really fun, but who cares if it's easy?'.

that's what i don't get. why is someone like that playing games in the first place? to brag about their achievements? what? i don't get it.

I am so not getting that 100 deaths achievement, I play this game so carelessly that I often mess up.

Ah well, more fun this way than trying despertly not to die at every corner. Plus, there's always second playthroughs.

GET THIS GAME. Far Cry 2 and PoP, thanks for the good Christmas, Ubi.

Not trying to cause anymore argument but it's quite easy to understand. People have different tastes, and most people know what their taste is. If he wants a game that's challenging (which to him is probably fun!) then that's his choice. Maybe he won't find an easy game fun or rewarding. If they really wanted to appeal to both spectrum's they should have added difficulty options of some kind.

Just playing the devil's advocate here.

Hey guys, been looking everywhere for this info, but are there any difference between the two games in terms of extras/performance? I dunno which version to get and like both my 360/DS3 controllers pretty much equally. Only thing that I could think of would be the HDD install but even then I hadn't heard much about load times to begin with...

Does it unlock Farah too?
Yes.

I took pictures of the US LE, which I'll upload as soon as I can get them off my iPhone.

Also, yes guys, you unlock Altiar by linking in game. Hit Y on the menu screen, and you'll be asked to link your Live account to your Ubi.com profile or create one.

I can agree with this when it comes to linear/story-driven single-player games. But I do love games like N+, F-Zero GX, and Ikaruga that are just disgustingly hard -- but not unfair -- that make you feel like a god when you finally beat them.

I think you're missing the point . For some people, like me, games that don't present some sort of challenge get boring very quickly.

You really need to chill out.

Honestly, I think PoP is another example of the video game medium switching from the traditional skill-based sports-like paradigm to interactive storytelling. IMO this is a good move but I've noticed alot of the more hardcore traditional gamers are somewhat threatened by this change. As video games turn more and more to telling stories with a combination of writing, art design and gameplay, we're going to see games get easier and easier. Afterall, the point of telling a story is for the audience to experience the whole thing, not stop playing half-way through because it's inaccessible.

Nonetheless, if you primarily play games to overcome difficult gameplay challenges in order to show off your bad ass skills and storytelling be damned, I think you will be sorely disappointed in the years to come. Smaller skill-based XBLA or PSN might be your saving grace, though. Plus, competitive multi-player gaming isn't going anywhere.

I still think they should have used Petz.

I'm just imagining a little puppy doing the wall runs and then instead of sliding down with the gauntlet, using his claws.

I played the game at work today for about an hour and I must say I was disappointed. The 'not dying' thing really eliminates any tension the platforming may have had. And I'm not so fond of the platforming itself either. It feels a bit unresponsive, like when you're wallrunning and you wanna jump off but the prince must first finish its animation. And sometimes it feels simply like one big QTE, the prince does too much fancy stuff with the press of a single button. Oh and I didn't like the Prince's voice.

The leveldesign didn't do anything for me either but that may improve further on in the game. Anyway I decided against picking it up, I'd rather replay Mirror's Edge on hard again.

Not being able to die made me feel like even more of a badass in Sands Trilogy. I tried crazy shit because I knew I wouldn't be punished for it.

Will Mirror's Edge give me motion sickness... That's why I can't play FPS games anymore or Fallout 3 (the newest example even in 3rd person view)... :(

At least in Sands of Time you had a limited amount if rewinds. Seeing Elika's hand grab you 20 times in a row gets old pretty quickly.

If you've experienced motion sickness in FPS games, Mirror's Edge is not a game I would recommend unfortunately.

If it's so easy, stop dying?

And yes, you had limited amounts of sand, but it wasn't like it was the stuff was rare.
