Shigeru Miyamoto
Senior Managing Director, Nintendo
General Manager, Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development

Shigeru Miyamoto is perhaps the world’s most recognized video game developer, creator of industry icons like Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and Nintendogs. In addition, he is the behind-the-scenes engine of innovation for many other notable Nintendo breakthroughs.

In his keynote address at the 2007 Game Developers Conference, Shigeru Miyamoto will reveal how a singular creative vision drives his work, not only in terms of his world-renown software, but also in generating key technologies, including the current global phenomena, Nintendo DS and Wii. And he will challenge the audience to apply his approach in their own distinctive styles.

Updates
The conference has ended.

The main theme of the keynote was to try and give developers a looking into Miyamoto's thought process and his approach to attacking game design.

Within the keynote, two things (outside of the main portion) were revealed:

- There will be a new channel where you can have a popularity contest with your Mii's across the globe.
- There was new Super Mario Galaxies footage shown.

Fans may have been taken back by the lack of "megaton" announcements, but keep in mind that this conference is for developers.

-------

Start your engines GAFers, it's time to begin a speculation supernova for the upcoming keynote by the plumber loving, green tight wearing, barrel throwing, dog petting genius himself: Miyamoto!

This post will be updated with links and information regarding this keynote as they appear.

What's he not going to say? What's he not going to reveal? How many times will he laugh?

The suspense is killing me!

i think i heard of that guy..

I think he did some game with a fat plumber killing mushrooms by stomping on them..

He also made a game with a guy wearing a green tunic and a green hat..

I might be wrong though

I'm honestly a bit pumped as I've been largely ignoring anything GDC related till today. Miyamoto with a keynote should be a big thing for developers as well as consumer since he has great insight on game development.

I think this is how the show will go

1. They'll start off talking about how good DS and Wii Sales are
2. They'll talk about something no one cares about and make us even mroe anxious
3. They'll bring someone out and talk about a mildly interesting DS game.
4. They'll show Animal Crossing Wii/Wii Fitness
5. Discuss a channel or 2
6. Show a montage with new SMG, Disaster, Forever Blue, etc footage.

the end.

So, is Nintendo allowed to reveal anything tomorrow? :-/

Unlikely, because this stock pending business has a value of more then half billion dollars. Sure more important then a conference.

I don't think that Miyamoto has anything he needs to work on that relates to that stock pending business. There are other people who deal with that other than game programmers and marketing people.

Hasn't it been confirmed that nothing is going to happen? Please don't start any Thursdayton nonsense, please. I ate two cans of corned beef hash from the dollar store, around 200-300mg of cholesterol and sodium combined. My heart can't take anymore damage.

I'm excited to hear what he has to say about game design and that is all. We all know that Nintendo aren't allowed to reveal any new info by law so why are people getting excited for new info?

I think non-news keynotes are generally more interesting because they typically deal with theory, practice, and motivation.

"This is how you will make money on our console."

I would expect SOMETHING to be said, why else would he be speaking? I don't think whatever little rumor leaked out onto an American website could possibly really know what the man himself is about to disclose.

If you guys find any good links that you want included in the OP, please post them and I'll update.

The problem is that if there is a big stock transition like that, it is important to mantain the value of it as more constant as possible. And if Nintendo itself is interested to buy it, it is better to NOT announce big things to prevent the stock's price to go up.

Miyamoto is concerned about that thing ? Of course, because what he says has a lot of influence on developers and on the entire videogame industry.

But wasnt it said, that it´s only forbidden to announce vage details of games and there creating unnecessary hype? But that solid information and material is ok to be shown? That´s really what i want to know. Im not interested about Miyamoto´s game design-speeches,´we´ve heard so many from him.

Its GDC not e3, thats why they usually invite devs....to share ideas, techniques and to mingle. Not to pimp out wares, hopefully GDC wont turn into the next e3.

Well I can agree with you there. Your post made it seem like they were too busy not that what he says would influence the stock price.

I'd imagine he'll talk about Nintendo's long-range plans for the Wii's lifespan.

as well as a few words about Zelda Wii, a game we probably won't see in video form until 2008, and probably won't be released until fall 2009.

The secondary offering price for the Nintendo stocks was fixed yesterday, so it can not change. I dunno if that will have any effect on whether Miyamoto shows anything new or not.

I think GAF is sometimes mean.

why make an official thread about an event almost 24 freaking hours before it even starts?

*hypes*

Looking forward to this speech, even if his hands are tied on announcing new stuff. Hearing Miyamoto speak on development is enlightening in it's own right.

Not all speeches are keynote speeches. For a given event, there is only one keynote.

Oh, sweet plurality.

They will show Animal Crossing people will comment on how it is just like an AC world PS HOME but instead of Microtransactions you have to deal with that ****ing Racoon/Tanooki son of a **** Nook... Large arguments will be had over which is worse - Microtransactions with real money, or Nook and his asshattery. Gaf will implode.

To any press reading this, we need a straight answer on the whole stock options thing right away. Will it have any impact on Nintendo's showing, or is it *****-like bullshit?

Nintendo should make it a question on Everybody Votes. I vote that Tanooki guy will get more votes for worst than microtransactions; microtransation hate is sooo 2006, Tanooki guy hate is eternal.

I actually think something like this might happen. Might be the reason why Reggie snarled when Home was shown...

omg. An Animal Crossing Channel

What is Mr. Miyamoto interested in now? How are you spending your leisure time nowadays?

Iwata: Miyamoto, who made Pikmin when he was gardening and Nintendogs after owning a dog, will answer his hobby today (laugh).

Miyamoto: What am I interested in now? I am interested in many things. Maybe you'd love to hear that I recently owned a cat or lizard (laugh). But these are not the decisive factors for me to think about next games. Talking about Pikmin, for example, we were doing a lot of experiments on GameCube by having some concepts which were eventually resulted as Pikmin. It was just that I was doing gardening at that time, so I thought, "Maybe this might fit into the concepts that we are experimenting now". It is not that we made the game system because I wanted to incorporate my gardening hobby. This is similar to the remark Takeda made today. I like dogs and since I owned my dog, I thought that dogs could be a game. However, fact of the matter is, we could not think about the concrete way to make it a fun game. We, then, encountered the DS hardware and realized that we can finally make an application on that dog concept. I was a typical Japanese husband who has been neglecting family lives, but I am spending more time with my family now. I am now interested in how a family enjoys in one house, and that interest pretty much suits well with the concept of Wii hardware. In that sense, Wii will become a hardware which will satisfy my interests of the past 20 years or so, so that I am enjoying making software right now. Finally, I am doing something lately, but I think I need to refrain from talking about it today. Hopefully, I can tell you what it is in 6 months or so.

I think the main thing Miyamoto needs to get across to the audience (seeing as this is a developer conference), is the fact that the Wii should be inspiring unique games and ideas instead of being used as a port machine.

The mentality needs to change about Wii development, and hopefully this keynote can spark the "revolution" towards a new generation of games.

Being the figure he is, I can see Miyamoto challenging the developers present to look at Wii as an opportunity to give users a new experience they've never seen before anywhere else.

Thats my hope at least
