Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock on iTunes
Price: $0.99
Developer's website

iTunes Description:
The Sleep Cycle alarm clock is a bio-alarm clock that analyzes your sleep patterns and wakes you when you are in the lightest sleep phase. Waking up in the lightest sleep phase feels like waking without an alarm clock - it is a natural way to wake up where you feel rested and relaxed.

Sleep Cycle has become a huge success with a #1 paid app position in many countries, including Germany, Japan and Russia.

Since you move differently in bed during the different phases, Sleep Cycle uses the accelerometer in your iPhone to monitor your movement to determine which sleep phase you are in.

How it works
Have you ever woken up feeling completely wrecked when the alarm clock goes off, despite the fact that you have slept "enough" hours? When this happens you have probably been awakened during a deep sleep phase, and your whole day can turn into one long zombie marathon.

Other days you spring out of bed with a smile on your face, feeling completely rested even though you shouldn't. As the alarm clock goes off, chance seems to play a big role in how your day will become. But does it really have to be that way? This is where the Sleep Cycle alarm clock application comes into play.

additionalscreen.jpg

During the night you go from light sleep to deep sleep, occasionally entering into a dream state which is called REM-sleep. These are things that your normal alarm clock does not care about, and will go off at the set time regardless of whether you are in a light sleep phase or in the deepest sleep. However, since you move differently in bed during the different phases, the Sleep Cycle alarm clock is able to use the accelerometer in your iPhone to monitor your movement and determine which sleep phase you are in. Sleep Cycle then uses a 30 minute alarm window that ends at your set alarm time and wakes you in your lightest sleep phase.

FAQ
Do you support the iPod Touch?
No, we do not. This is because of limitations Apple has put on us developers. It is not possible for us to shut down the screen and keep the accelerometer running on the iPod Touch. With the screen being on all night the device can become warm. This is the only problem with Sleep Cycle on the iPod Touch and because of this we do not recommend using Sleep Cycle on the iPod Touch.

We will support the iPod Touch as soon as Apple gives us the possibility to shut off the screen without shutting down the accelerometer. Feel free to contact apple about this and maybe they will fix this problem in a future firmware version.

Do I have to keep the charger connected all night?
We do not recommend using Sleep Cycle without a charger connected. Sleep Cycle uses at average 30% of the battery during one night. Sometimes more sometimes less. If you do not charge your phone during the night it can become discharged. Then the alarm will not sound in the morning. If you still want to try Sleep Cycle without a charger we recommend using a regular alarm clock as back up.

Can I use my own MP3 music as a wake up melody?
Unfortunately no. We have engineered the wake up sounds to wake you up in the best possible way. By allowing any music to be used as a wake up sound we can not guarantee a good wake up experience. Some songs might for example fade in very slowly, this will be a problem. Other songs might start very abruptly, this would also be a problem.

Why does Sleep Cycle mute iPod music that I play when going to sleep?
This is a technical issue that we are hoping to fix in the next release.

Update! One of our users has discovered a way to trick the phone into playing music or auidobooks while using Sleep Cycle. Feel free to use his trick until we release a fix for this problem (verified to work with iPhone OS version 3.1.2).

My iPhone becomes hot during the night. Is this normal?
No, this is not normal. Make sure you do not cover your phone with anything more than the sheet. For example, make sure that your pillow does not cover your iPhone.

Does Sleep Cycle work on water beds or memory foam mattresses, such as Tempur?
We cannot guarantee that Sleep Cycle will work on these mattresses. Even so, a lot of users have used Sleep Cycle on such mattresses and said that it works well for them.

Can my iPhone be muted (work in silent mode)?
Yes. The alarm will sound in the morning even if the phone is muted.

Why is "No Volume Available" displayed?
This is because the phone is muted. Un-mute your phone using the switch on the side of your iPhone and you will be able to select alarm volume. Note that the alarm will sound even if you see this message.

If I wake up in the middle of the night and get up from the bed, should I reset the alarm?
There is no need to reset the alarm during the night.

How well does Sleep Cycle work with 2 people sharing a bed?
Our experience is that it works very well. Normally your body will "block" the movement of the other person and the iPhone will not detect that movement. You can test this yourself by using the test function in Sleep Cycle.

Does Sleep Cycle function properly with auto-lock on?
Yes it does.

The alarm always goes off at the end of the time! Why?
The most common cause for this is that users lock their phone before going to bed. Do NOT lock your phone using the button on top of your iPhone before going to bed. Locking the phone disables the accelerometer and Sleep Cycle must fall back to a back up mode that wakes you at the end of the alarm time.

Also note that Sleep Cycle needs at least two nights to adapt and calibrate to your bed and to your sleep patterns. Taking that into account it is possible for the alarm to go off at the end of the time 3-4 nights in a row when you start using Sleep Cycle.

"It just works. Period. It does exactly what it advertises which is absolutely amazing."

"I was baffled at how well it worked. Almost every day I used it, I felt refreshed when the alarm started." - Christina Karlsson

"Waking up at the right time is an amazing thing. I couldn't believe the difference it made!" - Michael Palka

"It felt like I was already awake and the iPhone just let me know it." - Anders Hejdenberg

Welp, it may seem strange to create an offical thread for an iPhone/iPod app but to me, this warrants one.

You know how some days you wake up fresh as a daisy but others you feel like crap even though you went to bed/woke up at exactly the same time? Apparently it has to do with where in your sleep cycle you were when you woke up.

So in a nutshell, you tell this app when you need to be up by - ie when you'd set your normal alarm - and it will wake you with your choice from a selection of 'alarm' music up to 30 minutes prior to that time based on your sleep patterns.

It sounds like a gimmick but i've been using this thing for a couple of weeks and it really seems to work! Perhaps it's the placebo effect but even if it is, I feel better, and at the very least it's interesting to have a look at my sleep patterns during the night.

For the sceptical, the 'test' function demonstrates exactly how sensitive the iPhone accelerometer is.

I place my phone in the recommended position and if you're worried, it works fine in airplane mode.

So GAF, what say you? Has anyone else used this? Care to share your sleep data?

Idiotic. How does motion determine various stages of sleep? Just another form of digital snake oil. Don't put this shit on GAF

Is this a joke post? Body motion is correlated to the sleep stage you're in until you reach your 60's.

Good idea. I talked to people about it years ago.

Technology* still isn't there to do it. The app is most likely total bullshit. It cannot measure brainwaves accurately.

*- at mass market prices.

But the bigger problem is that nothing is going to beat the biological clock. If you aren't waking up refreshed and at a good sleep cycle, your brain's clock is out of sync, or drugs are interfering. No monitoring/alarm system is going to fix that.

To answer some of the criticisms.

This thing costs 99 fucking cents. Of course it doesn't measure brainwaves and it isn't completely accurate.

It's built on the assumption that more body movement occurs during REM which is true for most of the population. Due to the iPhone's sensitive accelerometer, it measures said body movement pretty accurately so I don't know what people are bitching about.

Solid Moustache said:
I don't think the accelerometer is sensible enough for that..

It sucks that you have to buy the app to use the test function but you can put the phone in position and listen to it make noise when you move around in the bed. The volume even correlates to the size of the movement.

Sure wiggling your toes doesn't set it off but any sort of body shift and even head turns are recorded.

^^ I think what they mean there is that it will work on a touch, but they don't support it.
It works, but only if you set your iPod to remain awake the whole night instead of going to auto-sleep...but that defeats the point since chances are your battery won't last that long anyway.

Which is a shame. This app seemed so cool :(

Solid Moustache said:

I'm not saying the app works but the concept is sound. The iPhone's accelerometer is definitely sensitive to enough to know I'm not rolling around in my bed.

Give me a fucking study that validates these stupid awake-sleep alarm clocks. Most of them just detect small movements then "activate" when its near the set time to wake you up.
Many of these alarm-clock type devices are always based on testimonials or just fucking anecdotal evidence :P

I don't care if its a dollar, you are basically advertising a shitty app.

I use a wall charger with my iPhone. I doubt an iPod Touch could last the whole night with this app active without an active charge...let alone my iPhone.

Anyway, I use this thing. It fucking works like a charm with me. To paraphrase one of the reviews in the OP: it feels like you were already awake and the app just gives you that extra nudge.

Uh, no way would I want to have my iPhone where it could fall off the bed or have me roll onto it during the night.

Come on mate I think you're being pretty unreasonable.

It's been scientifically proven that it's better to be woken during light sleep and that's what this app is designed to do.

As stated, the fundamentals of how this thing works are sound.

Just because noone's bothered to commission a study that validates the devices themselves doesn't mean they are "shitty" or don't work.

i've been using this for about a month and it absolutely works most of the time. even if it didn't it'd be worth it for the graphs.

i sleep on a japanese-style futon (super-thin mattress, wooden floor) and it's still sensitive enough, though it'd probably be better on a springy bed.

seriously, it's made the world of difference to my sleep pattern. now i set my alarm even when i don't need to be up by a certain time.

Same here. I just need some kind of solution to my waking up problems. Not exaggerating, I wake up at least an hour late around 90% of the time. Fortunately my bosses are lenient that I am over an hour late every single day.

hey guys, so is the moral of this story that I can make a spam thread for my iPhone apps too when i become a member? nice! /sarcasm

I actually do have a couple of apps on the iTunes Store, but I would never do anything like this

bought this late last week and tried it for a few days....surprisingly enough i actually felt refreshed when i woke up and that's saying something since i usually feel like crap in the mornings when i wake up.

I bought this a while ago but I swear it worked better the first two or three days. That or I just saw that I was up 15 minutes early and went back to sleep anyway.

Those first few days were amazing though. I think it might have been the placebo effect.

Edit: This is a good thread. Stop bitching. It's a really cool app.

well hey, maybe if one of your apps becomes a global #1 hit then someone will do it for you!

this app works, it makes me feel better, stop taking that away from me. i feel like a christian in a GAF religion thread.

I'm pretty sure the OP is not the developer. Would not be acceptable if it was.

I'll admit that the app is compelling, but such a well formatted, organized, "Official" post smells fishy to me.

If the OP is just a really big fan of the app and took the time to make the post, then I'll gladly eat crow and hope that someone someday likes my work enough to make an detailed "Official" post on GAF.

edit:grammar

Somewhat true, but the standard of 'official' posts are set in the gaming side. And the standard is pretty high.

Believe it or not you're not limited to the endless and ever so worthwhile girl-age threads that I guess you prefer.

Now go accuse Costanza of working for NBC

The moral of the story is don't be a dickhead junior.

Imagine if Nintendo came up with a more advanced version of this using the Vitality Sensor. You would have to get used to having it strapped to a finger all night, of course. :lol

There are lots of posters who pride themselves on making great OPs. More so here then any other forum I've been on. It's nothing to get suspicious about. It's nothing different from the gaming side where they make huge OPs about their favorite games.

What happens when you wake up / when you have a pet who you often wake up to find on the bed. Wouldn't it throw the application off?

Edit: And this also only works when sleeping alone. I like the idea though, would probably buy it if I had an iPhone.

friend of mine was raving about this the other week. sounds good, hopefully they release an android version.

There is.

Snag Gentle Alarm off the marketplace, its basically the same thing. This has a nicer looking UI though.

Tried it last night for the first time. I slept horribly anyway so it wouldn't have done much, I'll try it out for a week. Graph is nice though :)

Please tell me what would happen if you rolled over your iphone laying on a mattress. Would it explode?

Come on dude. :lol

I think I read that it needs a few days to really work out when to wake you, so it won't work properly the first night you try it. Haven't tried mine out yet, though, have to do that tonight!

So you put it under your pillow? ...probably worth a try if it's that simple.

And what's with all the insane "GO FUCK YOURSELF AND DIE" responses in here? :lol

I bought and tried this out last night. The only odd thing is having that hour time window to actually activate. My alarm was set for 7:30, think I woke up around 7:19. It seemed to work, honestly. I woke up and didn't really feel as groggy as I normally do in the morning. I actually made it into work about 45 minutes earlier than usual.

Here's my graff:

No you put it on the side of the bed you generally don't sleep on. I usually make an "L" shape out of my pillows so I just put it next to that set up. It recommends not putting it under your pillow.
