I thought Bioware would save it :(

Swatbots (yes, SatAM Swatbots) will auto-resurrect (...)

Wait wait wait, what? My 5th grade self's dream was for a Sonic RPG, but one based in the SatAM universe so this comes as a major surprise since everything else in this game appeared to be videogame universe (well, aside from Spinball).

Does this mean that Ix is somehow related to Ixis Nagus?

You know, I plan on picking this game up one day, but every time I see this thread I think it asks, "Will is Blend?" That completely throws me off.

You can draw a few parallels with some Archie plots and concepts, but the only blatant references to any of the licensed spinoffs are the Swatbots (which the writer has mentioned was just a case of "hey, that's a cool name, I'm using it!") and one-off mentions of chili dogs and roboticizing.

I dunno how long it'll be until I finish my review. I'm on Chapter... 8? Of what? 11 chapters total, I think I heard somewhere?

But I gradually warmed up to the game. It makes a really, really poor first impression, what with all the awful music and ugly character models.

But... what can I say? Eventually you get over it. The terrible music and terrible character models don't ever quite ruin the game. Eventually you figure out how touch screen stuff works - I almost never miss a single tap or drag, now. The interface sucks (I really wish there were sorting options, or something) but it's easy enough to cope with. I usually play the game with my DS volume turned all the way down.

I've also found myself chuckling at some of the dialog, I'll admit. Eggman seems to have been given a lot of the better lines, even if some of them blatantly tread in to
"I'm a bad guy doing good deeds and good deeds are icky!"
territory. There's even a moment where a certain character channels a little bit of HK-47.

Dare I say the writing is clever - at least for a Sonic game. This isn't going to win awards for best writing in an RPG, but compared to stuff like Sonic Rush Adventure, Sonic 2006, and Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Chronicles might as well be Shakespeare. And, the more I play, the less I find myself cringing at "They really aren't trying to do this, are they" moments - especially given the ability to select a conversation tree response that makes Sonic treat everybody like an asshole (though berating Tails for constantly reminding me to save my game would be a lot more satisfying if it actually made him stop).

I haven't seen the ending yet, and I haven't really spoiled myself on what happens, but for those of you out there laughing at "another shitty Sonic game"... I dunno. Sonic Chronicles, at least the 8 chapters I've played of it, really isn't so bad. It's got a fair share of problems, but most of them are minor and easily ignored. I suppose, then, the question is, do you really want to play a Sonic RPG? Your tolerance for the game's faults rides on your answer to that question.

Could you do better than Sonic Chronicles? Probably. But you could do a lot worse, too. The game, as far as I've seen it, is simply decent - not horrible, but not GOTY, either.

Only problem I have is with the horrible soundtrack and sound effects quality which is sad since we are in the forth year of the DS and lower budget games doing it better.

The sound design in this game is fucking offensive.

The "metroid-esque" design also just means constant backtracking. There's like, five areas in the entire game. This game is pretty much the definition of mediocre.

Well.
There's five areas to start - but then you end up crossing over in to this alternate dimension and there's, I dunno, six or seven areas to explore over there, too.

Well, the chili dogs have been a part of the series since Sonic 2.

I kind of want to buy or rent this game to have Sonic act like an asshole to everybody, but I'm not sure if it'd be worth it to play the game. What are the basic pros and cons?

I hope that BioWare can polish it up, since there's a good core game here. But this is one diamond (emerald?) that's really, really rough.

This. I have started to really enjoy it, or I had, but then I hit the half way point and everything around me is alien (literally) and completely unlikable. Still love the combat, becoming blind to the choppy presentation, though unfortunetly I don't see me ever becoming deaf to the sound quality. I just hope the sequel is a little more grounded in a Sonic style (Blue Ridge was a new area that fit in perfectly - more like that and more classic zones) and has a lot more polish.

They may have been mentioned in a manual at some point, but it's never been quite official. As for pros and cons, I wrote a review on the last page, go read it. :( Sega1991's writeup is basically a summary, if you really want a shorter version.

His (roughly paraphrased) "Now I know why you do this! It's all just an excuse to go running about and jumping on things, isn't it?" line cracked me up, among others.

Logically speaking, Blue Ridge is just a modified Hilltop Zone, which then leads into the underground tunnels being a remodeled segment of the Mystic Caves. Assume that Oil Ocean is offshore and Casino Night and Chemical Plant occur in the city, and you've got most of Westside Island. :D

Wait wait wait, you guys honestly thought an RPG from Bioware... would save the Sonic franchise!?! Really?

Anyway, I played 2 hours of the game and got bored of it. I wouldn't call it the worst game ever, but it's just so boring. It feels more like a sequel to Sonic 3D Blast but with RPG combat.
