Official Sony's Gamers Day Thread - It has Begun

(2:45pm PST) Network
The networking features was then shown off which is all free and all standard with the console. He went into his icon based friends list and used a predictive text tool to write to someone. You can also use the USB keyboard. This is also where voice chat will be controlled. Harrison then scrolled to the web browser which can display multiple windows. Phil then showed the PS3 E3 Conference in One Minute from YouTube in one of the windows.

2:54 p.m. He just showed a taste of the Casino Royale trailer. And then cut it off, to head over and show us the network functionality. He reminded us that all games will use the presence and messaging system of the PS3 (Xfire's middleware also offers this tech). The software keyboard interface uses predictive text (like the PSP) but you will also be able to plug in the USB keyboard. Users will be able to use A/V chat, block and add friends just like we exspected.

Nice!

I doubt they'll do this lifetime or for even very long. It's too retarded.

What makes you so sure Sony will be in the market to lose more money by packing in component cables in every box if they've already established a bar?

What's the justification for MS? At least we get a rechargable battery on the SIXAXIS. MS & Sony both want to cash in when it comes to accessories.

There isn't. Both MS and Sony are ripping off the consumer with that price tag.

:lol Is that that video?

2:47 p.m.: In the Network Functionality part of the media bar, there's an Internet browser. Harrison says it is fully functioning and free out of the box. He opens up a YouTube page with a quick recap of Sony's E3 conference. "Riidge Racer!"

:lol

Something tells me you won't be bitching about the wii being able to power up wirelessly.

I don't believe Miyamoto said that Microsoft was copying their every move like my pal Kaz.

2:57 p.m. Harrison is demonstrating the online web browser that will be included in every system. They showed the YouTube clip of Kaz saying Ridge Racer. Sony has embraced the faux pas. Now, Harrison is using something called "Remote Play" which involves integrating the PSP with the PS3. The example Harrison used was firing up the PSP and picking up with the Casino Royale trailer, right where we left off.

Yes. Yes, it is.

Geeze.

There is a point where "taking your suckassness in stride" hits a limit. Sony has hit that limit. Poking fun at yourself only works as long as you don't convince everyone else you are retarded.

This is much better. :D

Oh, so it's okay for them to copy because Miyamoto didn't say Microsoft was stealing their marketing strategy. Great, thanks. That makes much more sense.

But unlike MS, it seems the PS2 component cables are Backwards Compatible, so that lessens the blow for some people.

Hadn't heard that...hmmm. Still stupid on Sony's part but that at least puts it above Nintendo's act IMO. Most people buying PS3s should own PS2s and anyone with an HDTV would have their PS2 hooked up through component.

(2:50pm PST) Remote Play
Harrison then picked up a PSP and wirelessly ran the Casino Royale trailer on the handheld system. Streaming the media on PSP can now be done in your living room but Harrison said that it will soon be possible from any hotspot in the world. Streaming your PS3 content on the PSP anywhere certainly opens some amazing possibilities.

THIS ****ING ROCKS!!!

Sweet.

component cables are only trivially more expensive to build than composite cables, i think -- though if they don't pack them in, probably a majority of ps3 owners will have to buy them, and there's quite a bit of profit there. for sony, retailers, and third parties. bleh. i've already got the hdmi cable i'm going to use, but this still bugs me.

oh well, i'd rather pay for component cables (i'll be using HDMI from monoprice though) than online...

Dear god ... it's light on purpose.

Doesn't mean it doesn't feel cheap.

Its crappy on purpose guys! lol

Though I haven't held a PS3 controller yet so I don't really know if it feels good or bad. But I doubt you have either, nor the guy you quoted.

John Smedley
John then showed off the PlayStation Store. The interface included featured items, demos, downloadable games, top downloads, and what's new. The system has integrated X-Fire which allows current users on the PC to see who's online with PS3.

Can't wait to see the interface! Hope the demos are free

That's very cool that it starts where you finished on the PS3..very much like that demo someone here told us about with PSP and the DLNA media server. Great stuff.

Luke:

2:51 p.m. Harrison is demonstrating the photo and musical capabilities of the PS3. In the videos area, all of the clips -- think YouTube -- are running in small thumbnail versions in real time, for Phil to pick which one he wants to see. He's picked a Spider-Man 3 trailer. Side note: This movie is going to be awesome. It's in 1080p according to Harrison (the trailer, relax).
Luke just can't win... :(

He goes from being overly-pessimistic to having no taste in movies. :P

I have. It felt crappy to me. But not to all the other folks chiming in about how on purpose and like diamond earrings it is, who apparently also have held it and used it play Resistance like me.

I just remember this comment from the SonyCowBoy which is kinda of amusing now that it's official:

"Believe me, if Sony doesn't come with component cables on the $599 version, I'll pick up a pitchfork right along with you and bitchslap the Sony name all over GAF for it. And then I'll go buy a PS3 anyway on launch day. It will be a major hissy fit."

It shouldn't have to be 'soon' either ... what if you plan to go wireless in a year or two? It still makes sense to get the 60GB model.

As far as replacing the ethernet cable with component ... sure, I'd be happy if they did - but financially it won't happen.

Component cables are far costlier to produce.

Financially or not, I think it should be happening because I don't think it's worth getting the 60 gb model no matter even if you have wireless. But maybe that's just me.
Also, I'm not a wireless expert, but isn't there ANY way to go wireless with the 20 gb model at launch, or perhaps in the future? I mean, there must be some way to get around it?

What's the justification for X360's 50$ controller and Wii's 60$ controller? I don't see you complaining about them.

Read my previous response... I think all companies are ripping us off with the controller prices.

Microsoft is mainly responsible.

i don't understand why you'd want a heavy controller. unless perhaps you want to bludgeon someone with it, which urge i've certainly had while playing goldeneye. i'm sure a light controller feels weird at first, but i don't see how it's a real negative.

3:00 p.m.John Smedley from SOE is talking about the online store and championing the ability to use third party middleware for online solutions (like Xfire). The PlayStation store has an API that allows gamemakers to build the stores directly into the game, "it will allow people to buy car parts." Oh, the future is grim. There are four tabs across the store: Featured Items, Demos, Downloadable Games and View All. In the Downloadable games tab we have PSone: Jet Moto 2, Fl0w, Blast Factor, Got Sudoku, Grip Shift DLX and a couple other titles. These PSOne games will be playable on your PSP at launch, and Smedley indicated that further down the line they would be playable on the PS3.

Smedley added a game to the cart and the money is in actual dollars, not points (thank God). Blast Factor is checking out for $0.01 (not final pricing). There will be ways to add to your account either with your credit card, or by purchasing cards at retail that will augment the amount of funds you have online. Smedley mentioned that it could be used like an online allowance for parents and kids.

The store can be built directly into the games. This means that you can make purchases like episodic content within the game. The store has a top story that features the latest content. Downloadable games featured PS1 content that is playable on the PSP and in the future playable on the PS3.

There's a very wide margin between a heavy controller and what the SIXAXIS is. Most controllers reside in this comfortable middle zone.
