"Official Statement Regarding PS3 Circumvention Devices And Pirated Software"

DoctorWho said:
I'm not sure. Wasn't Jailbreaking ruled legal. I assume they are referring to anything similar to piracy as illegal.

Anyways, I haven't received an e-mail yet but I also kept my PS3 offline.

Just to be sure. Are they banning the consoles or are they banning the PSN accounts?

Thanks

The jailbreaking exception to the DMCA only applies to cell-phones.

As for the bans, they're probably system bans. Banning a PSN account is useless since its so easy to make one.

I predict this will be a common "defense".

Which can get your account banned anyway since you're not supposed to give out your login information :lol

As soon as I saw this thread I went to EOL forums and is like watching hundreds of headless chickens running around.

It seems that even some people in 3.41 dongle also got catched, or even people that didn't entered online (but weren't fast enought to deactivate the wireless before using CFW).

Logging in on your account on a buddy's new PS3, downloading Wipeout HD on said PS3, installing it and then deleting your login information is sharing your login information?

So they're banning some people straight up but warning others who specifically have stuff on their system? Wonder what gets you banned immediately and what gets you thrown a lifeline.

Jailbreaking is illegal on anything other than a "wireless phone" at this current stage.

And my guess is console and account bans. Accounts are free, so they dont want people making up new accounts.

If I were Sony I'd make it a function of $/€ spent on PSN. Don't want to ban the big spenders too quickly.

hmm just got an email today as well.. when do they start banning? They said to stop inmediatly :p.
Now, you better disconnect you PS3.

You get banned directly when you are playing online now, I just stopped playing MvC3 when I read this xD

I still remember the prophets of doom saying that Sony would never be able to ban anyone because with the keys all applications would look official to Sony. Some were already ready to jump on SCE's grave.

Now I just wish Microsoft join the party and use the banhammer. Imagine someone having both consoles banned on the same day. The meltdowns would be epic!

Why should you care? You've made it clear you dont care about psn on the hacking threads. Lol

The thing with the account though is even if you can create a new one easy it doesn't really matter if you bought stuff from the Store with that account, you will have lost all those games you bought.

So are people really getting emails from Sony? Crazy.

Can anyone post the entire email (minus identifying info)? I'd love to see it.
Check the previous page, I quoted it.

"invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system"

Does that mean if your system gets a ban and you do a warranty check it will say your systems warranty is void?

Losing your warranty is quite a bummer tbh.

I'd be interested to know why some users got emails and others didn't.

No, all accounts on your PS3 can play the downloaded content.

For what? If I disconnect my Ps3 I´ll never be able to get online anyway right? Might as well make use of the time I have left :P

No you can, back up your saves and format your HDD. Then go to 3.55 and then go to 3.56.

Why do you need to format the entire HDD? Can't I just remove my backups and homebrew stuff from an FTP client?

In that case, no, but at that point you're sharing content which the ToS also tells you to not do.

Haha no way dude. There's no telling if they ban you or not even if you do format the HDD and go back to 3.56.

Either way, I don't care enough about PSN to do that. I just want to know if I should boot up Uncharted 2 and play that while I still can :p.

If they give you a warning they can't start banning you an hour away from that right?

Like I said I'm playing online and I'm not banned.

As someone who is pro-homebrew, I'm glad they're finally doing this. This should have been their only reaction, not the legal shitstorm they stirred up.

True. I always found game sharing to be a rather odd thing to turn a blind eye to. Never liked the idea of sharing games with strangers online, kinda felt like gaming the system. However when a buddy of mine recently got a PS3 and only had the cash for one game I figured I'd share some Wipeout with him.

Got say it's good to see Sony got their shit together. OFW 3.56 making CFW neigh impossible to install along with the current banning of CFW users from PSN. It was only a couple of weeks ago when we all thought Sony was fucked beyond repair on the PS3.

DangerousDave said:
It seems that some people that never used CFW but they gameshared the account with people with CFW also got the warning mail.

Sony would assume the user account had logged into another PS3, makes sense to send mail to that unit too

What?

<starts ringing friends>

Probably that people connected online in a CFW machine to gameshare some DLC, so they detected that account in a CFW machine. The best solution should be to say all people that has your account to deactivate your account from their machines.

Wait, so my PS3 can be banned if I shared a game with someone who ended up using CFW?

PS3 is unlikely. Account is very likely.

You should only be gamesharing with people you can trust!

Zoe said:

It's possible they might get the email, but the console that will be banned is the one the TOS was broken on.

Consoles will be banned, not accounts.

Go ahead and play online until you get banned. Then, you'll know how long you've had. No one, here, knows when Sony will get around to banning your specific machine.

Someone should make a thread with this info, I can see a lot of Gaf members in this situation that wouldn't spot it in this thread.
