Official UFC Undisputed '09 Thread: They Call him Punches in Bunches

Rice-Eater said:
Thanks guys, now I have those two problems solved. One thing I still can't do even on the easiest difficulty is making Chuck submit. I mean I can batter the guy for 2 and half rounds with plenty of knockdowns and put having him in the "Rocked" stage. but he still won't tap. I know about the whole stamina bar, so I guess what I'm asking is how the hell do you get him to tire himself out?

read the latest qna.

to submit easily you need to get them to use energy, not stamina. best done after they have done some "high energy" move.

I just tried that, I got him in full mount and forced him to exhaust himself trying to get me off him as I just focused on holding him down. When his bar was completely yellow and mine was green, I went for a armbar and triangle at different times and tried spinning the stick and mashing buttons and he still refuses to even let me lock in the submission. Seriously, WTF am I doing wrong that other people are doing right?

seems i was wrong about the energy thing, still the explanation is a little confusing if you ask me, from qna 9 :

Can you explain the submission system in detail? Are submissions going to be easier to achieve with other fighters than on the demo?

I’m so glad someone has asked this question! I’ve seen more than a few people misunderstand our submission system, so here’s the scoop.

Submissions pit two people against each other in a struggle that takes into account many factors. First, the offensive fighter’s submission skill and the type of submission being performed are considered. The higher a fighter’s Submission Offense and the more advantageous the position from which the submission is attempted, the higher the likelihood the submission will succeed. That’s why some people have noticed in our demo that Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s triangle submission from mount is easier than other submissions, like the knee bar from guard or the kimura from half guard. Also, the method the offensive fighter uses to sink in the submission plays an important part. There are two ways to execute a submission – mashing the face buttons or rotating the right stick, a maneuver we call The Shine. In all cases, The Shine is going to be a better method to sink in a submission. Make sure you rotate that stick fast! The faster you rotate the stick, the higher your chance of success.

It’s the defensive side and how players deal with submissions that I think confuses a lot of people. Similarly to the offensive fighter, a defensive fighter has stats that influence how successful he is at getting out of submissions. But in the defensive fighter’s case, they have two different stats – Strength and Submission Defense – and which state is used depends on which type of escape is performed. Brute force escapes, which are performed by rapidly mashing the face buttons, only take into account Strength. The other type of submission escape, Technical Escapes, which are also executed via The Shine, only look at a defensive fighter’s Submission Defense. As a defender, your best bet is to know which of these two stats is higher and to utilize the escape suited to that higher stat.

There is another extremely important factor in the success rate of a submission, and that is the defender’s energy level. I have seen many people incorrectly assert that the best way to execute a submission is to weaken your opponent by beating him up. This is simply not true! Energy is not lowered by hurting your opponent; stamina is the answer. Energy is only depleted when your opponent performs actions; running, striking, transitions, etc. all temporarily lower energy levels, and the lower your opponent’s energy level, the more vulnerable he is to submissions. We didn’t want fighters coming out and submitting people instantly, simply because they have a higher Submission Offense. We feel this would be very frustrating for players (and yes, there are fighters in the game with higher Submission Offense than Shogun and lower Submission Defense than Chuck Liddell, so there will be matchups where submissions are a bit easier than others). For example, Brock Lesnar has extremely high Strength and Standing Striking Offense, but even he can’t just one-punch KO everyone in the game at will. It just wouldn’t be fun, and we just don’t think it’d be fun with submissions, either.

My suggestion would be for submission fighters to pay close attention to what actions their opponents are performing to see when a submission opportunity presents itself. If you land a takedown and your opponent immediately starts spamming transition attempts or has just delivered a flurry of strikes and left himself gassed, this means he’s using up a lot of energy and thus will be vulnerable to a submission. However, if the opponent is playing a calmer strategy and is perhaps only attempting to protect himself while throwing carefully timed strikes, submitting isn’t going to be a very viable option.

Hope this helps!

Well the explanation seems clear to me...until you play the game and it doesn't work that is. I can beat Chuck to a pulp and force him to wear his self out and he still won't even let me sink in the sub let alone trying to get him to tap. But I know other people have done it and I've even seen videos on youtube, but I just don't get it. Sorry to be redundant, but what are they doing that I'm not?

If you don't use a turbo controller, you need to punch & kick him until his stamina is very low. That's the only way.

Bossman said:

Which is precisely what I do. This is how I've been trying to get Chuck to submit

-Play it on the easiest mode
-beat his body to death with the MT clinch and body kicks until his energy bar is as low as it can go
-get him to the ground and get full mount, hold him down while he waste energy trying to escape
-his small bar is all yellow, my big bar is green, I go for the sub, Chuck escape, WTF MAN JUST WTF
-I win a 30-24 decision because I refuse to KO/TKO him because I want a submission victory

Are you doing clean, fast circles on the R stick? I have trouble doing them clean and I think breaking out of the circle motion even slightly lets the opponent escape.

No, I'm pretty sure I'm not doing clean circles. I try to turn it like a madman so I'm sure I must get a lot of ovals and maybe even some half circles. But still that doesn't explain why button mashing doesn't work either. In the interview the devs said they didn't want fast submissions. But come the fuck on, if I have beaten my opponent nearly to death while I still have plenty of stamina/energy and not a bruise on my body I should be able to submit the guy without frantic circles or button pressing.

im worried about this too. if the top bjj guy in the game cant sub a mid level opponent in the first round (easier because they are less sweaty) then this game isnt really going to represent real mma very well..

the amount of fights that end in guillotines, triangles and armbars in the first round a reasonably high.

I think when it comes to online play, we won't have to worry so much if my friends and I are a good indication. I was able to submit my friends in the 1st round plenty of times as we were both button mashing like crazy when I slapped on the submission. But the CPU on the hardest difficulty really seems like he has a turbo controller or something because he can't be submitted(as Chuck anyways) even though I met the requirements that was asked of me(exhaust your opponent, have high stamina yourself).

I did try a number of times again, I can sub Chuck on beginner but he's still impossible on Expert. What pisses me off even more(and this happened almost every time I attempted it) is that when I beat him up pretty badly and force him to exhaust himself in the full mount, my sub fails and even though he has no stamina he is still able to block my escapes and reversals and mounts me and pounds me out. I know this is just a game, but I hate Chuck with a passion now :lol

GOTY candidate right here. Never believed I say that about a Fighting Game...about a THQ game...about a Yukes game. But damn, this game has so much depth and the demo is addictive as hell. Only thing I play besides Fallout 3 right now is the demo.

I'm sure this has already been discussed but... the box art is fairly ugly, though? The game deserves better.

Yeah box art certainly needs more Arianny.
The next game should be called 'UFC: 2nd Round' and the box art should be:
arianny-celeste.jpg

then on the disc there should be art of her sweaty cleavage.

Edit: Wow just noticed that old hag on the left staring at Arianny, and cursing the Lord because she isn't as fine :lol

Day one.

Really cant wait for this!

Best thing about the demo:

When you are rushing, skipping the intro stuff trying to start a the fight, and "The Beautiful Edith" and "Mario Yamasaki" lines by Mike Goldberg mix together to become "The Beautiful Mario Yamasaki" :D

Australian 360 mag (never heard of it)
Summary:
"We were both literally and figuratively gob smacked by UFC Undisputed. The nuances to the hand-to-hand/fist-to-face/foot-to-face combat were ridiculously deep, and far from the realm of button-mashery. Top it off with some of the most sexified graphics we've seen, and intricate leveling up system, and there's little wonder it's...undisputed.

9 out of 10.

From PVTGramps
0:28 seconds in, there's a clip that shows the Height/Weight Class selection screen. It lists for Welterweight the following maximum statistics:
Max Strength: 85
Max Speed: 95
Max Cardio: 95

0:31, clip of the Technique Screen.
"15% Bonus to certain Skills when this technique is chosen"

0:44, Clip of "Allocate Skills" Screen
It appears that you start with 160ish Skill Points, costing from 1-5 of these points to increase particular statistics by 1 point.
Skills start at 1 point.

1:07, Clip of "Example Screens" Screen.
Apperantly,. you can take a pic of your CAF for display on the roster, training and tale of the tape screens, and they seem to be the right size for use as Gamertag pictures.

1:09, Logo Screen
Cool! You get to pick where the logos show up on your shorts. Hopefully there's more available to start with than just the NHB shorts and White MMA shorts.

1:14, Head Coach Screen
The Head Coaches available to start with are the Producers of the game. Mike offers a Standing Strike pair bonus of +5, and Neven offers a Takedown pair bonus of +5. Plan accordingly.

1:18, Mouthguard Screen
Kind of awesome, you can select a particular color and style of mouthguard apperantly.

2:05, CAF Screen (Again)
Confirms 285 points for Attributes to start with. Attributes start at 1.

I finally just knocked chuck out on expert after about 50 tries. It felt so damn good.

Is there any way to keep someone in the muay thai clinch? Sometimes I'll grab chuck and get in like 7 knees and sometimes I can't throw 1 before he pushes me away. Does it just depend on the person that is being clinched?

I told myself I wasn't going to buy any $60 games this summer, but I think I am going to have get this.

Also, I just noticed that GAF league: coming soon in the OP. When is this getting started up and is it CAF or real fighters?

I'm up for either or, but the CAFs i've seen so far don't look that exciting besides having your own likeness.

i think you have to push in the same direction that they push in to keep them locked in it (might only be left and right or might be left, right, towards screen and away from screen).

Has anyone mentioned anything about the corner teams voices being so low and almost inaudible after each round when they're giving you the pep talks? That's the only real issue I had with the demo. Hope it's fixed in the retail build.

I am going to THQ on Friday to check out the game and will be interviewing developers and fighters.

If anybody has any questions for fighters or developers post here or pm them to me.

Thanks Brad

Please ask about online modes. Will we be able to watch other people fight? What's the lobby system like? Other than simple 1 on 1 fights what can we expect? Tournaments, PPV style events?

Do THQ plan to release a new UFC title annually, or will they stagger development and keep the game fresh with DLC and the online modes?

I'll see you there then :) I'm off to the airport right now. Going to be a long two weeks for me though as I'll be visiting Las Vegas to see Prototype and the Transformers game soon after.

Definitely quiz them on what, if anything, they have done/will do about turbo controllers.

I made a thread at the uoc boards for you BradVanDam and Caspel. Ill filter through the horrible questions and get you the good ones if it helps at all.

Maybe someone else can answer this for me in the thread, but if not, maybe you could ask them this: are fighters that are Southpaw (like Anderson Silva and Rich Franklin, for example), do they have that stance in the game, or is every fighter Orthodox? I ask because in the the 10-20 second various clips I've seen of these two in the game, it looked as if they were Orthodox..

Kimbo went on to supply reasoning for the switch, saying, "Boxing is really my first desire. I have a lot of love for it and believe I can do pretty well. [The sport of] MMA is somewhat of a project for me. Boxing is one dimensional while there are a lot of dimensions in MMA. I don't think it would be a hard transition from MMA to stand-up boxing because of my fighting style."

So getting dropped by Seth Petri-fucking-zelli THREE SECONDS into a match with some weak ass short right hand makes this guy think he should switch over to boxing? WTFLAWL

Lucky for him there is not much HW competition in Boxing...he could have a title fight in no time (assuming he can win a few fights)...and then he'll get creamed by one of them russian heavy'.

Jube, where are the pics of the ladders?

I don't see kimbo going 12 rounds in boxing lol. The ladder pics are here.

Heres some of the questions that get asked a lot that there are not answers to yet brad.
1. Will you be able to spectate online matches?
2.What will be the CAF overall cap, and can you be as high overall as GSP, Silva, etc.?
3. Is there CPU vs CPU
4. Will there be an online answer to Turbo Controllers and submissions?
5. Will we be seeing any additional unlockable fighters in the game?
6. Will does the online mode include. Is it just 1vs1 ranked and unranked?
7. How do the online 'ranks' hinted at in the achievements work?
8. Are there replays or the ability to save the highlights at the end?
9. Is it possible to make the clock work at real time?

Yeah, this game is sex; a friend of mine is a very casual gamer, I mean, he loves videogames but he desn't have any console. We are MMA fans (we loved Pride more than UFC)

Anyway, I knew he would like this game, and infact he love it, he keeps saying "Buy it now, buy it now!". That's the best thing about this game, easy to pick up and play, but hard to master.

Analyst predicts two million unit sales for "UFC 2009 Undisputed"
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on May 07, 2009 at 12:25 pm ET

While video-game publisher THQ finds itself bleeding money with multi-million-dollar losses and workforce cuts, relief could be on the way with this month's release of "UFC 2009 Undisputed."

One analyst mentioned in a recent Bloomberg.com piece expects more than two million units of the video game to be sold in nine months.

The game, available on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms, retails for $59.95.

The analyst, Todd Mitchell of New York's Kaufman Bros., predicts the UFC receives "17 percent of sales or a guaranteed minimum," according to the report.

Shares of THQ, which traded at more than $22 each a year ago, now trades at less than $5. The company found early success with WWE titles that have generated more than $1.5 billion in sales over the past decade, though recent titles have flopped for the company.

The new UFC game, which is a part of a three-year agreement with THQ, has earned plenty of buzz and positive reviews ahead of its May 19 release date. (For more on the game, check out MMAjunkie.com's on-site video-game reviews from events in London and Montreal.)

"UFC 2009 Undisputed" is rich in real-life details with more than 80 current or former UFC fighters, UFC broadcasters Mike Golberg and Joe Rogan, UFC ring annoucer Bruce Buffer, ring girl Arianny Celeste, and various fight-night officials and trainers. Forrest Griffin appears on the cover of the U.S. version of the game, and Georges St. Pierre graces the cover for the Canadian version.

2 million in sales would be awesome, it would put the game at around 3 in sports games sales wise if you do not count forza. But you now analysts.

If the demo placement on the Weekly Live Activity that Major Nelson puts up is anything to go by, Undisputed should do very well in sells. (I believe it was in the top 5 this week) I think it'll reach 1 million units sold pretty easily.

This should help you whether you're looking to apply submissions from an offensive or defensive position - including "The Shine" to finish the submission off.

Having problems getting out of a submission attempt yourself? The brute force and technical escapes are also shown in detail here.

How many of these techniques have you tried yourself?

Two million projected sales? Damn, thats awesome.

Might be a good time to think about picking up THQ stock...

Edit: nevermind, stocks up 5% today. Smarter people already saw this coming, apparently. :lol

Mask, Skyscrape and Punk Ass of Tapout are the last three playable characters on the UFC 2009 Undisputed Roster. Along with Efrain and Bader this makes 85 playable characters. The idea was almost reconsidered when Mask died, but after talking with the other two they decided it would be best to keep him in.

I'm pumped Mask is in the game, he was in the old ones and his legacy will further live on this way.

http://mmajunkie.com/news/14811/tapo...undisputed.mma

edit: The article also goes on to say that in clearing up some confusion about the extra 2 characters you get when you pre order the game from Game Stop. It states that the pre ordered copies are actually fabricated different, to include Escudero and Bader on the game as opposed to getting a code and immediately downloading them offline. THQ Officials say they will be available as DLC 90 days later free of charge. These are they only planned downloadable characters.

With two years remaining on its contract with the UFC, THQ is already hard at work on the follow-up to "UFC 2009: Undisputed." Future incarnations are expected to feature more downloadable characters. Company officials cited UFC light heavyweight prospect Jon Jones as the perfect example of the type of character they would have loved to create after the original deadline for roster completion had passed.

Great thing that they kept mask in the game, he did a lot for the sport. This also brings the current roster that we know abou to 85 fighters with the 2 pre-order ones/

Well, all he seems to be saying is that he'd be a better boxer than MMA fighter. And that's hard to deny considering how horrible he was at MMA. The only thing he had going for him was his punches as he couldn't do shit on the ground.
