Official Worldwide Nintendo Wii Launch Thread

Shoot, Im looking at 80 hours or more for Zelda:TP alone. I was very interested in Red Steel, Monkey Ball, and Trauma Center, but I dont really know too much about those games outside of comments here and there
Same here, all my attention has gone to Zelda. Even though I havent followed up on any of the other release games, I might end up buying them if they get good reviews. I never knew much about SotC or Okami, but I bought them because they both got brilliant reviews and they are two of my favoueite PS2 games.

ok guys, the Wii thread is only at 9 pages, while the PS3 thread is at a whopping 25 pages. Now I realize the PS3 has already launched in JPN, but that is no excuse for this thread only having 8 pages.

Due to very limited available funds (business, holidays, birthdays, etc) I am just going with:

Wii
Zelda
Sim City - SNES VC
Component Cable

I want an additional Wiimote and am just considering doing Wii Play for it. $10 more and you get a mini-game game to boot. Can actually wait on the second nunchuck as no games I'll have at start will use a second nunchuck.

Really want to pick up CoD3 for the 360 due to the graphical bump, 5.1 sound, and multiplayer/online, but I would be lying if I didn't say that the controls on the Wii are almost enough to move me to that version. The "trailer" for it look insanely fun.

Other games I am looking at maybe after the beginning of the year:

Super Monkey Ball
Golf
Red Steel
F-Zero - SNES VC
Gunstar Heroes - TG16 VC
Super Star Soldier - TG16 VC
Tony Hawk
Madden 07
Metal Slug Anthology
Excite Truck
Elebits

At this point though, Sunday can't come soon enough. Get a good night's sleep, grab a good breakfast, stroll on down to TRU and pick up the Wii, Zelda, and a 2000 point card (maybe Wii Play), head to Best Buy for some cables, head home and get it all hooked up. Zelda will then be on the TV for the rest of the day. WOOHOO!!!

Europeeee! Just about 3,5 weeks.

I'm getting Zelda, and might get Red Steel, depending on reviews.

I really wanted Excite Truck :(

I'm getting Zelda and ET.

A few weeks ago I thought poorly of the Wii launch lineup, but now that I'm back into the Wii-buying camp it really is pretty good. There are so many games worth putting my dollars on.

If reviews of ET's final build say that there's a dearth of unlockables, and that what's seen is the demo is about all there is, I might switch it for SMB. But I did really enjoy my play of it, so I might buy it anyway, we'll see.

I'll be getting Elebits and maybe CoD3 before the year is over.

When is Wii Play coming to America?

Just the system and Zelda at launch for me. Reason being is that I wouldn't have any extra time to devote to the other games. Looking down the line, I'll likely get ExciteT, Red Steel, Elebits, and Rayman.

So who here is a charitable gaffer that are willing to send a wii to Europe, specifically Sweden, on the 20th of November?? I could of course buy one in Sweden on the 8th of December, but in the end I know that I will save money on importing (I usually import a lot of games). And, please, don't say ebay, the prices in that place are insane. I could perhaps give you 50-75 dollars over the 250$ price + shipping + taxes(?). It doesn't have to be a preorder. According to a lot of you you could just get into the shop and buy one the next day.

Still slightly worried I won't get a system on launch day, having left my pre-order a bit late (hopefully Amazon UK can help out there...) but I'll be getting:

Wii console
Second nunchuk
Classic controller
RGB SCART cable
A bundle of Wii Points cards
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
Red Steel
Rayman Raving Rabbids
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Wii Play w. second remote

Assuming everything's up & running on day one, I'll also pick up a selection of VC games:

Super Mario 64
Baseball
Donkey Kong
The Legend of Zelda
Mario Bros
Tennis
Soccer
Wario's Woods
Donkey Kong Country
F-Zero
Sim City
Ecco the Dolphin
Gunstar Heroes
Sonic the Hedgehog
Bonk's Adventure
Super Star Soldier

That should see me through December and well into the New Year - thank Christ for overtime this month ;-)

Europe gets boxes \o/

Looking forward to Sunday, definitely going to pick up Zelda, but I'm torn right now on my second game between EXCITE TRUCK, Trauma Center, Monkey Ball, Red Steel, or Rayman. I'll probably get a lot of these at one point or another but with a PS3 coming too can't get them all at once. Hard to decide which will be the best complement to Zelda, I like all kinds of games.

yeah, I don't get it... Nintendo is making sure to mimic apple packaging as much as possible in the entire world EXCEPT FOR WHERE APPLE HAS THEIR HIGHEST MARKET SHARE! Nintendo REALLY could have scored an even bigger coup in the US by releasing those slick packages over here and further distancing themselves from "normal video games".. and in this case even pleased the actual gamers as well.. boooooooo

Nice packaging - and great to have more confirmation that an official SCART cable will be available. Definitely going to pick up the component cables as well, as I'm sure to upgrade in the next year or so & I'm not wanting to get stuck hunting for out-of-stock component cables on eBay...

I'll be picking up:

Zelda
Excitetruck
Metal Slug Anthology
Some Wii points for Gunstar and the TG16 games

For some reason it was the custom soundtrack news that finally pushed me to get Excitetruck. I feel like this is a habit of Nintendo's that I should support.

I'm a UK gamer who will be attending the Game Oxford Street Midnight launch! As I am sooooo last gen, I don't do hi-def games so I will be satisfying my new gen fix with a nice Wii package:

Wii Console
Zelda
Super Monkey Ball
Wii Play
2 additional Wii motes (will make 4 with bundled remote and wii play)
Carry case

Can't wait!!!

Does anyone know if Nintendo has adjusted the overscan on the image the Wii puts on the screen so you don't end up with vertical black bars on the left and right sides on 16:9 HDTVs. Gamecube and PS2 were notorious for not filling the whole screen on HDTVs. Just somethign that always annoyed me.

(And no I'm not talking about playing 4:3 games on a widescreen TV, I'm talking about the image not filling the whole screen whether it is a widescreen game or a 4:3 game put into stretch mode.)

Boxes are much more easy to open.

I always cut myself after trying to open it with scissors.

I hope they fixed it too. We'll see in a week, assuming I can get some component cables right away.

oh man, Xrenity, there's a joke there but I'll take the higher road!

I will just say, I can't care about the packaging of a controller or console. i mean, i care about the cases games come in because they actually stick around but besides that...

Heh I love packages.. I'm such a sucker for them! I keep my black DS lite gorgeous package in my bedroom, so that I can see it whenever I want. I even remove dust from it every day. :lol

Yeah, well, I like it when I see a nice package, but I also throw them away after opening up. Especially the 360 controller one's, which is such a horrible package with sharp edges.

Just found this:
The stubborn plastic casing around the Microsoft Xbox 360 faceplate seemed to laugh first at the kitchen scissors and then the steak knife that tried to penetrate it. When 14-year-old Daniel Mroue's attempt to open the thing with a long, serrated bagel knife failed, his parents became concerned.

Mroue's father, George, took over with a pair of box-cutters, which did the trick. But George Mroue also ended up with a wad of bandages shoring up the damage after slicing his palm open on a sharpened piece of plastic.

"It was ridiculous," groused George Mroue of the February incident. "There was nothing anywhere telling us how to open the (darn) thing. I don't understand why they make it so goddamn hard to open these things."

Crazy story :P

yes, to sell it off on ebay in 4.5 years time

ok All, I just called the Nintendo World Store in NYC (so this for the nyc gaffers) and here is the info I got from the manager.. He said this is 100% final, so...

If you preordered the system with them, they are gonna open at 6am for preorders ONLY!!!!

If you are a walkin customer, then they are gonna open at 8am for you guys.

So its kinda cool that us people that preordered, get first crack at the accessories.

I'm going to walk in to my local walmart at 12:01AM Sunday morning and hopefully pick one off the shelf along with Zelda.

Then when Gamespot/EB Games opens later in the morning, I will go trade in my DSL with some DS/PSP games so I can pick up another wii controller with numchuck and a couple more games... not sure which yet as I want to see some reviews. Will most likely get a FPS (COD3 or RS) and a Mini-game title, Rayman or Monkey Ball.

Anyone know if you can still trade in the old style PS2s? I'll bring that too if they take them still.

Was kind of a hard choice between Wii & PS3, but when I remembered I can pick up a PS3 after launch, and that the Wii is already coming with a killer app, there really wasn't a need to get a PS3 just yet.

I have Thanksgiving week off as an added bonus. :)

So what games is everyone buying at launch?

Im just buying zelda. There would be no point of buying any other games because Im not too interested in them and if i did buy them they would be sitting on the shelf for ages because i will be too busyu with zelda.

Zelda and Red Steel to begin with. That and Wii Sports should tidy me over quite a while. Like you say, too many games at the same time and they only stay on the shelf and rot.

But I do want a few different games to try the new controller with. Zelda for obvious reasons and Red Steel to see how a fps feels with the wii.

Reserves in Spain are being cut, it seems that we're gonna get less units than before, some shops (game) have 150+ reserves, and are getting only 20 Wiis.

Edit: It seems that Game has canned all the reserves, they're gonna sell the units to the firstcomers, night-camping FTW.

Wow, so first I get screwed on my VGP preorder, and now I won't even be able to get a european system? Nice job, Nintendo. It seems you don't want my money, so I guess I'll be taking them elsewhere.

I just LOVE getting cut by my accessory packaging.

just to clarify a bit, I don't think you will be able to "walk in to" anywhere to get a Wii... you will have to stand in a line, and all launch day units will sell out. if you truly plan on just showing up somewhere after the lines have died down, prepare to be disappointed. I think the stories of people walking into a store later in the day and just seeing units sitting there will be few and far between. I mean this isn't the PSP we're talking about.

Anyone know if there are any backwards compatibility issues with Wii? I'm thinking of eBaying my GameCube. The only thing I can think of is GBA player, which I don't have.

the only BC issues I would imagine exist are the GBP, networking on the games that support it, and possibly connectivity enabled games (Zelda FS? FFCC?) Everything else should work fine, even maybe the connectivity games..

As far as I know, it's a similar situation to the DS/GBA compatibility. The Wii more or less has the hardware to play GC games directly, without having to do any software emulation. As for the GBA player, I don't think that would work, as the Wii would have to have that massive EXT port on it.

edit: beaten! ;)

Because I literally don't touch it - and when I do, my hands hurt a lot. Plus my fiance has one I can play if I ever want to play it again.

I'm feeling pretty confident there won't be a massive line at a 24 hour walmart. A huge portion of the people crazy enough to go pick one up at midnight wouldn't go on faith like I'm planning on, they'd go pre-order it.

WHY THE **** HAVEN'T WE STILL SEEN THE COMPONENT CABLES PACKAGING AND WE'RE 6 DAYS AWAY FROM LAUNCH?!

Love the new packaging :)

Totally Offtopic but does anyone have the image from the big lebowski with the text "8 year olds, dude"

I checked my amazon preorder 5 min ago and it says it's scheduled to ship today, and arrive tomorrow (one day shipping). Somehow I doubt that will happen. Anyone else with amazon preorders see the same thing?

Mine still reads a delivery estimate of September 25 - October 2. :)
