Official Worldwide Nintendo Wii Launch Thread

Anyone else notice that in the Wii ads that "Nintendo" is not mentioned anywhere? I don't know whether that is good or bad... Nintendo is such a household name, you'd think they'd stick in there at the end or something.

It's their 2nd pillar strategy

The "Nintendo" logo appears in the lower right corner at the beginning of each ad, and stays there for about 4 seconds. But that's about it.

I don't know if this was answered or not, but is there a memory limit on the SD cards for the Wii?

Like, if I go out and buy a two gigabyte SD card right now, will the Wii be able to load and handle it or is their a memory ceiling?

2GB will work but above that, no one knows yet.

Just wanted to chime in here with a heads-up that Rayman and Red Steel seem to be shipping. I got a voicemail from the lovely EB Robot Lady telling me they'd be in this afternoon.

Thanks, Robot Lady!

Do you live on one of the coastal states?

what's the word on backwards compat? is it a glitchfest like the other consoles? can i just stick my GC discs in there or do I have to repurchase them digitally?

BC should be good to go, probably close to 100% if not 100%

Speaking of BC, what's some good GameCube games to buy, considering I've never owned one, especially cheap games...

RE4 will be a no-brainer.
Will probably try Wind Waker, even though I'm not too big on the graphical style.

May give Metroid a try, but prefer to wait for the online MP3.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Also... can you play GC games with the Classic controller? If not, can you play virtual console games with the GC controller?

Get Super Smash Bros, Eternal Darkness and Ikaruga.

Cube games can only be played w/ the Cube controller... I believe most games can be played with the Cube controller but I seem to remember there was one exception..

Anyone wanna play the "Lets guess and rank which order the launch titles will sell the most in" game?

So, what's the official word on midnight launches? I'm ****ed because I can't really give up hanging out with the girly on Saturday night, we haven't hung out all week and we are kinda stuck. I'm hoping I can leave her place by 5 am, swing by Superwalmart and see if they are open, then, rush to try and get into Best Buy's line. I hope that works. I mean seriously, 1 million can sell out before 9 am, right? I'll bring my DS along, fully charged so I can wait.

Zelda
Excite Truck (because it's the other demo)
Madden (people love their madden)
Red Steel (More press=better game? sike)
COW3 (WWII games keep coming, so I guess they sell)

I don't care about the rest. Book it.

That's what I want to know, too. I read that the midnight launches were off, but then I read just the PS3 midnight launches were off, and the Wii is still on.

I need to know if my Saturday night is free, otherwise I've got to find some excuse to ditch my woman :P

Also, does EB let you switch your reserve money for another game? For example, I've had Excite Truck reserved, but I'm thinking of switching it to Madden. Would the $5 carry over?

Thanks, do you know if Wii games that require the classic controller will be able to use a gamecube controller?

Like I hear the new Smash bros game will require a classic controller... can you also use a GC controller?

Um, I can see absolutely no conceivable reason to get SSBM when SSBB is coming out unless we get news of SSBB being worse than SSBM in one or more particular aspects.

I'd say in order....

Zelda
Excite Truck
Red Steel
Madden
COW3
Rayman
Spongebob
Tony Hawk DJ
Trauma Center

... what else

the SD card spec only goes up to 2GB. anything beyond that is at the mercy of compatibility between the card and device.

I preordered my Wii yesterday from GAME.co.uk. They didnt know their allocations yet so fingers crossed. Its actually the first time Ive ever preordered a console.

What I ordered:

Wii / Wii Sports + Zelda + Red Steel bundle
Nunchuck
Wii Play / Remote

Either way Im hopeful to have one by xmas.

I just called my Wal-Mart and he told me they were expecting upwards of 50 systems. I'm sure that's still TBD but that'd be nice. :lol

So nobody's reviewed Rayman yet?

If I do end up picking up a Wii (I'll feel like such a sucker if I do... but but Zelda), it's either that or SMB as my 2nd game. I'm leaning to SMB, but Rayman looks to be the Wii's Feel the Magic: a stylish set of tech demos that explore the possibilities of the new control scheme. It will probably be pretty forgettable, but I had a lot of fun with FtM at the DS's launch.

Charlie's frickin' Angels worked during the gamespot marathon. So I'd say it's 100%

B/C is 100% Nintendo put out a press release or something in Shimbum newspaper in Japan its on www.nintendo-inside.jp article talks about ps3 issues with 200 games and how Nintendo have confirmed 100% B/C with GC
That's because Sony put work and effort into a seamless integration of PS1 and PS2 games, whereas Nintendo half-assed it as usual. I'll take 200 problematic games that can be fixed with system updates out of a library of thousands over being forced to use an entirely different (and obsolete) set of controllers and memory units, personally. BC is 100% because Nintendo basically shoved a whole GameCube into the Wii box, just like they did with DS's gimped GBA BC.

This solution is much better than 360's, of course, but Sony did BC right.

I don't get that logic. So if it's broke they did it right? Or am I missing out on your sarcasm?

Apparently he thinks that Nintendo should have reworked their BC so that it was seamless and there would be no need for any of the old gamecube controllers or memory cards. I couldn't see playing a lot of gamecube native games on a nunchuck/wiimote. I'll gladly use my wavebird *shrug*

It's easy when you use the same controller for three successive generations, I suppose. Personally, I'd rather spend $30 and have access to every single game than sit around and hope Sony will care enough to fix 200 different games.

edit: I see you edited even more stupidity into your post. How, exactly, is the DS's GBA BC gimped?

Classic controller. I'm somewhat bitter at having to continue using controllers I don't like much, especially when I have to keep three of 'em around in addition to three or four Wiimotes.

Again, 200 PS1/PS2 titles are problematic -- they haven't said how many are totally nonfunctional. However, 200 titles is a small (<5%) chunk of the combined PS1 and PS2 libraries.

OTOH, this is why Nintendo products print money :)

(BTW: The DS's implementation of the GBA killed the link port. Not that I care that much, but it still makes a GBA necessary to have around)

Wow.

I just listened to the newest Gamespot Hot Spot podcast and it was a completely luke warm Wii session. Wasn't expecting that I guess. Give a listen if you're curious.

what games were they talking about?

Well, it's more like they added stuff to the GameCube box and then compressed it. Or to make an analogy this forum might understand, if the GameCube is a leaf Pikmin, the Wii is a flower Pikmin.
