Official Worldwide Nintendo Wii Launch Thread

what games were they talking about?

Actually had some negative comments about Zelda, (Remote speaker, swordplay), Wii Sports, and ExciteTruck. And console talk in general... some of the expected stuff like Friend Codes, etc.

I don't get the Friend Code thing. It's ONE frickin' code. Jeez.

Well, it's more like they added stuff to the GameCube box and then compressed it. Or to make an analogy this forum might understand, if the GameCube is a leaf Pikmin, the Wii is a flower Pikmin.
Heh, nice analogy. Your statement is indeed more correct and precise.

wow, this is not a very heartning podcast.

i wonder what goodies are gonna be given away at citywalk. im hoping that something worth the value of a set of controls, or shit a free set of controls would be sweet.

wouldn't be that out there either considering what they were giving away for the DS launch.

just picked up Rayman and Trauma at EB. They had those two plus Monkey Ball, Madden, Happy Feet, Avatar, Red Steel, and GT Pro.

Batigoal,

You end up securing a system?

What? That can't be true.

Why not? The Wii is now in the hands of press. It wouldn't have been hard for any of of them to toss it in their PC and rip. (EDIT: a game I mean :D )

Now a Wii modchip... That is unlikely at this point.

Trauma has a nice color manual! Boo Ubi, your Rayman manual is thin and black and white... but has this nice little Hints and Tips section:

HINTS AND TIPS

Tip #1: Check out the Hints and Tips page in your manual!
Tip #2: Carefully reread Tip #1 in the Hints and Tips section of your manual!

I saw this and thought it was kind of interesting. I'll let the site explain it:

Wii Video 9 is a free video conversion application developed by Red Kawa. It allows you to convert your computer video files (like avi, divx, mpeg, etc.) into the specific video formats that are playable on the Wii.

I guess it plays the videos through the Photo Channel.

Here's the link:

It's true. They're under 2GB, too.
Which seems fishy, because all releases have the exact same, somewhat weird size according to my sources. Oh well, we'll see. Even if someone really managed to rip them, I doubt there'll be a way to actually play them anytime soon, if ever...

So, will I be able to walk into Wal-Mart, Best Buy or Futureshop on day 1 and pick up a Wii with Zelda or am I SOL?

I don't think anyone knows for sure. But if nintendo isn't lying and they have 2 million at launch I'm pretty sure there will be consoles available on day one for people just strolling in.

I'd get there midnight before if they open all night. Demand is gonna be huge.

Amazon says my copy of Zelda is shipping soon!!!

Gonna be hard to have Zelda, but no Wii, even if it's just for a few days. :D
Mine doesn't say anything. Amazon better not screw me over like they did with Gears of War.

I saw a copy of Zelda today unopened so awesome. too bad they cant sell it yet.

well they didnt let me open the game :(

so I dont know and I didnt want to see the manual either heh. just a couple of more days.

Does the DS Wi-Fi dongle work with the Wii (I think it does, just want to make sure). Any word on availability of the Ethernet adapter?

ALSO: Can the DS Wi-Fi dongle be used for connecting to the Internet with a PSP or notebook computer?

THANK YOU!

Yes, you can use the dongle with the Wii. As for other devices, yes, if you replace the software with general Buffalo Wi-Fi software, but then it would loose its easy interaction with the DS and Wii.

THE Wii I SAW IT.

Seriously. I went up to GameStop tonight and they had it on display. For a small exchange of my license (I offered my CC!), the guy (that was surprisingly well spoken, clean cut, and not fat for your average GS employee!) handed me the Wiimote and politely cautioned me to use the wrist strap and that it was fairly sensitive.

The only game that was loaded was EXCITE TRUCK. Pretty straight forward. Steer by turning the controller, press 2 for the gas pedal, and use up on the control pad for boost. The funny thing about this, what I must say was a fairly average game, is that the first time I turned the controller --and the truck actually turned the way my hands moved-- it brought the goofiest smile to my face. Can't explain it.

Like I said, Excite Truck was a little bit better than ok. It would be tons more fun with an human opponent, especially if they were standing close. The graphics were shockingly good. Seriously. What, PL, are you serious? Yup. Now--it wasn't even close to some 360 shit that I've seen, but the scenery and water was gorgeous. Not a lot of water splashing effects, but it reflected everything nicely. The sight distance was awesome. No noticeable slowdown at all. I ****ing hate those damn trees. The one complaint I had about the graphics was the blur effect. I understand that its a stylistic effect meant to give a sense of speed, but I honestly think it detracted a bit from the experience, especially at higher speeds the level of clarity on screen was little more than 4-5x the size of the truck itself.

The control worked like it should. It was probably more realistic of a control even than what was needed, or in my case, wanted. With an arcadey racer like this, I was hoping it would be easier to turn when going high speeds, but I often found myself careening into objects that I could have easily avoided. Those ****ing trees kill my ass. And the [TAP 2 TO RECOVER] or boost or w/e pissed me off too.

If I had to choose, this would not be a game that I took home with me, but I would love the chance to play it with some friends for a night. I would give it an above average score, 7.5ish. Looked like there were about 10-12 trucks to unlock and you could change the colors with each one. Also, check out the stage called "puddlejump" when you get the chance. The scenery is freaking awesome, combined with the water make for a fun and original experience on the Wii.

At this point, I really really want to try Twilight Princess, but now I have to see how a game like Red Steel plays. Of course, Wii Sports.

Btw, the controller is smaller than you think. Only a little bit longer than your average fold-up cell phone, and about the same weight. Oh yeah. They had a crowd noise and a bonus noise come out of the speaker. It was a little tinny, but the funny thing is that I didn't realize it was the controller speaker until halfway through my tryout. It was effective in giving a little bit deeper of an experience.

More later.

just like excitebike! ;)

Yeah i tried excitetruck out today at ebgames and i found it to be ok... i dont know what it was but my truck didnt turn too well with my movements *shrugs* but i won the race anyway. I created a mii which was fun but found that the facial hair and accessories like glasses were lacking in options.

I have one from amazon. Got it on Sept 15th w/overnight. On the Amazon discussion forums, one person's wii has been shipped, but he placed his preorder in the second round of preorders through amazon. :/

I just spoke to a customer service rep and he was pretty adamant that the ship/receive dates I had were correct. If he's right, my Wii's shipping tomorrow and I'm supposed to receive it on Friday. Again, BIG-FAT-IF he's right.

Nice guy though.

Stupid question, I know: How will you save games on Wii? Memory cards? Is that also where VC games will be stored?

512 MB of internal flash memory. You can store VC stuff on there too. Also, you can purchase SD memory sticks if you need more space (I think it only supports up to 2GB now).

I picked up my copies of Rayman, Red Steel, and Monkey Ball tonight. They seem to be readily available along with the assload of other Ubi Soft and THQ titles. Activision's were in the drawer too.

New question: Where the hell is Metal Slug? It better make launch.

Oh and the clerk I talked to at the local Gamestop seemed sure they were getting a good amount of controllers and general accessories. No hard data, but I trust the guy.
