Official Worldwide Nintendo Wii Launch Thread

so i can't connect to the internet with my wii. i have a d-link di-624 and no matter what security settings i choose it doesn't work. the connection test always fails. i even switched off authentication and made it an open system. nope. connection test fails. finding the network isn't a problem for the wii and the signal strength is very high. but it just can't establish a connection...

any ideas?
Updated the firmware on the router? Sometimes that works. Also, try setting the channel to 1 instead of 11 (the default). Try these out and get back to me.

oh this is just great. now suddenly the connection test worked, however, i was pretty sure the connection wouldn't last long since something's obviously wrong here. but no, you can't cancel after a 'successful' test, the system instantly starts downloading the update and now the progress bar is stuck at the very beginning. awesome. it doesn't move at all. that's some brilliant design, i don't even get to choose if i want to update or if i want to use the connection.

WHAT THE **** AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW

goddamnit this is making me so angry. it's not moving at all. it's just busy doing nothing. will it stay like that forever? why doesn't it get that the connection is not working?

Jarosh: If the progress bar stays stuck for awhile, I suggest just rebooting the Wii. I was afraid to do it, for fear of bricking the system, but after waiting like 3 hours, I just went for it. I ended up rebooting twice on "stuck bars" once at about 15%, and once about 90%, and it worked out fine.

The bad news is, now that it connects, you can't "avoid" that update (or at least, I couldn't).

Eventually the connection will time out. Wait a few minutes. If this doesn't work, hold the power button on the Wii for 5 seconds until the light turns red. Then power back on the Wii.

so I played a couple of hours of Zelda now and the game is indeed awesome and the controls very responsive. However I noticed the game is very bright, almost too bright. Is it anything with my TV or is it suppose to be that way? (atleast start of the game)

Well, there is a color/brightness test screen that comes up everytime you start your game. Does that end up looking correct for you?

what if i just switch off my wireless router?

I tried doing that, both with my router and my actual cable modem, and it just remained hung up where it was at.

I admittedly did NOT try turning it back on with either switched off, so that might be a way to avoid the update.

somone probably already posted this, but maybe not

http://youtube.com/watch?v=z2509fk1j8o

web browser not released yet, but look, someone using Google on Wii by doing something with DNS.

in the comments

Technically, he telling the truth. He just has something set up like Simple DNS and is having his Wii point to it as it's DNS server, the dns server has a dns enrty for the Wii Shop channel that changes it to go to a (probably) local webserver. At which point it's probably just a page with frames and some javascript. There's a bunch of this documented already.

!@%!@#^!

My region's out of stock from today's shipment already, and this is in quebec for christ's sake, there's no black friday or any shit like that, and its 12pm to boot, im one of the rare few who finish work at this time on friday, DONT PEOPLES HAVE LIVES? Those who dont work on a friday morning, i want to slap them with jealousy.

Haven't seen a Zelda commercial yet, but I just noticed the first Wii commercial in VT4 here in Belgium.

It's more like a teaser than anything else. Obviously there's more to come.:)

i've been playing the console for a few days now and my overall impressions are mixed. imo:

the system itself is awesome! an excellent interface, easy to navigate and the remote is everything i expected it to be and it's really comfortable to hold. the console also looks great. the whole mii concept is amazing and a brilliant move by nintendo.

haven't tried online stuff yet, being in the uk i didn't want to risk it until things settle down, but i'll give it a go when it becomes more robust. not sure if i'm going to be buying many vc titles, but i am interested in new games if they become available.

graphically, through 480p, it looks great and the sound, through a surround sound setup, is also excellent. on a tech level i'm more than satisfied with it.

zelda tp: wow!! i expected this to be the greatest videogame ever made, and it is, but the most amazing thing is the quality i anticipated for this level has been surpassed several times over. twilight princess is a masterpiece! the controls are also excellent, and having distance between hands is such a freeing experience. overall, the controls are far better than wind waker's, to the extent i wouldn't want to go back to the old claw gripped controllers.

wii sports: again, i expected to enjoy it, but i wasn't prepared for how brilliant the game actually is. it really is a remarkable piece of software. nintendo has managed create a game with a huge appeal, everybody who's played it loves it, both gamers and non gamers. so far, tennis is my favourite, followed by bowling, but they're all great fun!

in zelda, wii sports and their ds games, nintendo has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt their original strategy, which began during the nes, is one which allows them to excel. returning to their old ethos, and abandoning their crappy early gc strategy, has created two of the most amazing games i've ever played. wii sports has the same design characteristics as nintendo classics like smb, duck hunt, mario kart, etc. reading through the iwata asks interviews, it's obvious nintendo is a much happier and more confident company than they were when they developed titles like wind waker, luigi's mansion and mario sunshine, and i couldn't be more pleased they've left this failing strategy behind.

basically, the nintendo i love is well and truly back!! :D

as for the third party stuff, well, that's where the real disappointment is.

monkey ball: the single player is good, and has great music, but it really is just more of the same. even though adding motion controls to the game works well, it still feels like playing monkey ball 3, and the problem is i'm not a big enough fan to be satisfied with a third version of the same game, but it's still fun. however, the multi player mini games are terrible! if this is what we can expect from third parties in terms of mini game fun, i'm not interested in any way.

rayman rr: while these mini games are better than those in monkey ball, the problem i've found is they're fun the first time you play them, but once the initial newness has worn off, they're all a bit meh...

excite truck: average, at best. it's sometimes fun, but most of the time a clumsy experience which i don't have any desire to become good at.

red steel: wow! this game is bad! really bad! it's only decent when you're stood still and play the game like a light gun game, the rest of the time it's not fun at all, and the sword fighting is terrible!

if i just consider the console, wii sports and zelda, it's the greatest thing i've ever bought and an incomparable gaming experience, but when i figure in the third party stuff, it becomes a mixed bag. thus far, it's obvious they have no clue what they're doing. all this talk of, 'oh yeah, we love innovation' and 'we can't wait to create games with this new functionality', is complete bollocks! from my experience it looks like third parties are in it for a quick cash in, while they devote the bulk of their resources to ps3 and 360. hopefully the quaility will improve over time.

overall, imo, wii's success or failure lies in the hands of nintendo and its internal teams, just like the ds. if they can deliver enough compelling content over the next couple of years, wii could be a huge, HUGE, success :)

restarted the wii while playing around with the router's settings. now the progress bar is flying...
Restarting the Wii also helps. This is what I had to do when I updated my Wii.

Don't worry, interrupting updates by restarting or connection dropping in the middle of it is like dropping a download in a browser - more often than not you can just restart the update at the beginning just fine.

ok you CANNOT use a foreign credit card for buying wii points. the credit card address has to match the region you select in the options menu. and the available options for a us wii are obviously only american regions plus canada and a few other ntsc regions.

Ordering Wii Points cards off the net it is!

EDIT RANT

Nintendo, where the fvck is my Opera browser!? I want to post and visit GAF all on the same TV, because my computer can't hook up to the Wii directly.

Has anyone else noticed how much the pointer stability changes from application to application? In the Wii main menu it seems pretty steady, but in the Mii Channel it's jittery. I guess even among the included apps their anti-jitter code differs, or is just not there in some cases.

Ok so all the Miis are stored in Wii sports?

And if i copy all my saves on a SD card and put them on my new Wii it will work fine?

Ive been seeing tons of things that say it will and say it wont. Any anyone confirm?
Miis can be saved on their own, but considering they're supposed to work with multiple unknown future games and already have a fixed file size for fitting on the remotes, they can't possibly store all the save data relevant to each game. So I believe the actual game save data would be in the Wii Sports (or whatever future game) file, which for each character links it to a Mii. If you've copied both the Mii and save file, I'd think the Wii Sports save file would detect the familiar Mii and things would work, but I can't confirm this.

Why is the Wii racist? "Sort Miis by color"?
Heh. That would be clothesist.

When is Opera going to be released? I'm really anxious to try it out.
We don't know. It sounds like the Wii Shop is using some early version of the Opera browser, though.

Restart it. First, since it's still in the download phase it won't actually be in the middle of updating your system files yet. Second, the only other possible action is waiting infinitely. I was worried about doing this on the first night when it stopped about 2/3 of the way through, but once I turned it off and back on it immediately retried the download and was quickly successful.

yes it looks correct. I see 3 squares and 4 different squares of color. I now adjusted my brightness so it looks a little darker. Looks perfect now.

yeah I heard they could even send the code for you through email so they dont need to ship it.

Are you surprised? (glad to see you made work your system ;) )

HO...LY...SHIT man.

I still cannot find one, even after today's second shipment.

the Gamecube launch was NEVER this bad.

B...bu...but I though you could just walk into the stores at noon!!

:lol

Excite Truck is fun. Definitely a Nintendo game. Kenji Yamamoto and Masaru Tajima did the music and its embarrasing almost.

But it is tooo shallow and no decent multiplayer.

Red Steeel is a POS.

You laughing at me? huh? :p

and this is in Canada, best buy had all 80 claimed for 2 hours before it even opened.

but my local best buy got 30 or so ps3's, which is more than I expected.

This isn't bad, chief. It's good!

Good for Nintendo! Good for gamers! Good for the industry! Bad for Sony! :lol

Don't be afraid to take one for the team. If you want a Wii in the third shipment, expect to camp out. For now, chill out and play something you've not finished yet.

Haha. When I did it, i had 4 miis, 2 white ones, 1 asian one and 1 black one and it sorted them in this order: whites, asian, black. It's probably a concidence though.

I'm using the same exact router.. no problems.

Make sure MAC filtering is off.

No, just at GAF's general attitude towards Wii launch a week ago. ;)
It's what I thought I'd be able to do. It's what I've been able to do with every single nintendo launch I can remember. N64, GC, DS..... even SNES, I think my parents just walked into a store on launch day and got one (Although they might have pre-ordered, for all I know)

Yeah, but when have you ever tried to get a launch unit with Zelda being a launch game? Never - that's why you can't get a Wii.

Still can't seem to find one either. It's ridiculous, even the nice lady at the out of the way as heck little game store said she'd been asked like 75 times today when I was there at like 8am.

It's never been anywhere near this crazy getting a Nintendo anything at any point in the past. I'm baffled about it, either they shipped way less than usual or the demand for the thing is ludicrous.

I think I'm just going to give up on it for the time being. I'd like to have one for the Christmas holiday school break- but then I just got some sweet used PS2 games on the cheap so I'm probably set for a while.

Everyone hating on Red Steel is approaching it the wrong way. It's not a light gun game, it's a PC FPS with analog move/strafe and a 3 dimensional mouse. Once you learn the skills needed to play the game it's fantastic.

I walked into a Best Buy 2 hours after opening and got a Cube on launch day. I had some trouble finding an N64; a couple weeks after launch I tracked one down at a Nobody Beats The Wiz. I had Genesis instead of SNES so I have no idea about SNES, and I got my NES in 1987 so they weren't hard to find.

We had 10 systems in and there were at least 30 people in line. At 7:00 AM.

All day we've been getting calls for it. At least 10 per hour.

When the first guy paid for it, he held up the bag and everyone cheered. Like it was launch or something.

I don't get it. I really don't.

IT'S A NINTENDO CONSOLE. IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE POPULAR YOU IDIOTS.
I think Nintendo discovered why their portables were more popular than their console hardware. It was a simple matter of the amount of Nintendo per cubic inch being spread too thin on previous consoles.

so i love my wii and i LOVE zelda. but goddamnit, the wiimote speaker is CRAP.

it's so awfully lo-fi - all i hear is noise and more noise. it hurts my ears and there's really no 'immersive' effect thanks to the stark contrast between the audio coming from my surround speakers and the below walkie-talkie quality sound of the remote speaker.

i really dig the idea behind the speaker and i hope there will be a 3rd party remote with a much better speaker.

oh and i thought i could adjust the volume of the speaker? i couldn't find any such option - neither in the system settings nor in zelda's options menu...

I was able to do it in the home setting. You should be able to click a wii remote icon on the bottom-left corner. At least, I think you can.
