OG Switch vs. Switch Lite: Better Screen?

Which of the two do you think has the better screen? I can't really compare them since it's been almost 2 years since I even had an OG and I just got my Lite. So, what says you?

About the same, I'd say.

Lite gets the usual PPI bump from the screen being a little smaller, making things a little crisper, but overall, I get a similar impression from them.

Generally the original has a better screen than the Lite except for PPI. Not sure to what extent it can depend on certain batches though because Nintendo's dubious QC.

Some have a colder profile and that would be the biggest difference.

OG Switch: 236 PPI
Switch Lite: 267 PPI

Not worth taking away the ability to connect it on TV for this
That depends on how you plan to use it and whether you want to spend the extra hundred. The question was about the screen though, so I wasn't really speaking of anything else. But, since you brought it up, for me the Lite is the better system as I only use it portably.

Yeah, me too. I got it as a secondary to my PS4 Pro. If I want to play a game on my TV, I'll play my PS4. The Lite is for when I'm on the go or moving around the house and don't have the time to sit down in front of a TV.

Stick with the Lite, then.

The OG's advantage is TV, HD Rumble, a bigger screen, kickstanding, taking the Joy-Cons off for multiplayer, etc. If that stuff doesn't matter to you, the Lite is better at being a portable, with the lovely size, huge weight reduction, and so on.

As Mista and I said, there's very little real difference between the screens, and you also have the one with the best PPI.

Lottery.

Lite has better pixel density and so sharper screen.

Most Switches I've seen have abysmal screens.

Just poor all-round. 720p res tick box and that's it. That's Nintendo bean counters for you.

Any evidence to support this? Not out of the question, but I've never seen this mentioned before, by anyone.

I've owned two, seen others, am good friends online with quite a few Switch owners, and all of us think the screen looks great. I also see that sentiment in a mainstream sense.

Looking at your post history, you kind of have a relaxed version of TDS, but for the Switch. You don't seem to do much on Gaf besides Switch Console Bad.

Which is fine by me. Just don't misinform people.

Google IPS 3DS screens and IPS NSW screens.

I say it how I see it.

I've seen years old 720p displays with excellent screens. Eg the years old Sony Xperia Z3 / Z5 compact have excellent 4.6" 720p displays. Bright, vivid with excellent contrast and colour saturation. In contrast, the NSW screens are piss poor. I'm sorry if that offends you but I'm not in the business of being a cheerleader for a multi-national corporation or astro-turfing a particular product.

Sure, Jan.

So now it's "in contrast" to other products? I thought they were just "abysmal"? Goalposts being shifted already. No source for that lottery claim either? :messenger_winking:

Which, btw, the former is still a load of horseshit. The screens look great. If you were being as uncharitable as possible, for some kind of bizarre experiment, the worst you could say is that they look fine.

Judging by your escalated rhetoric, and inability to back up your absurd statements, the only one offended here is you.

No, just screeching about the Switch whenever possible. At least the others get paid?

Nice stealth edit, for the extra dishonesty.

How about you google them, and bring them to the thread? You're the one bringing up an extraordinary claim, thus you are tasked with providing the extraordinary proof.

Ive owned both and while the lite does have a cleaner image due to the smaller screen, its just barely different. Almost like a placebo effect.

if all you care for is the screen for handheld play, yes thelite will be better overall but for literally everything else (battery, rumble, swappable joycons incase you get stick drift, being able to connect to a tv) the OG switch is still the better package.

lite

smaller screen = higher dpi

-edit-

the fuck yall even debating this shit ? XD damn smartphones are 1440p these days minimum ..

I use both, The difference is minimal but the screen is a little bit sharper on my lite. Also the whites are brighter and less washed out for some reason.

If that's to me, read the thread. Nobody is debating Switch screen vs. Smartphone screen resolution for many hundreds of dollars, even thousands. There's a clear winner there, and it's a bit useless of a comparison, as Switch portable content outputs at 720p max anyway, so, why would a higher resolution screen be needed?

Even smartphones similarly drop their rendering resolution hard when faced with a real game, and don't actually put those screens to use in those scenarios.

We're debating, or rather I'm correcting, a very silly statement about the Switch screens looking abysmal.

Except contrast ratio, black level and color space coverage are all things (after having owned 2 Lites, 3 regulars and seen many more, all of the OG models are better in these 3 regards compared to the Lite).

Love that AV noobs think the world begins and ends with pixel density lol.

Also, idk if you're trolling but the iPhone 11 is like 800p and the best selling iphone.

The iPhone XR was the best selling phone IN THE WORLD last year and is 720p...so yeah, dumb comment if not a troll

The OG looks worse.
Don't think so, I did a side by side comparison and the OG Switch screen

The OG screen looks warmer which I prefer and the Switch lite has a Blueish tint, it's all personal preference but I think most people prefer the warmer looking screen.

My Lite does not look like that. I'm sure there is a wide variation in screen color accuracy though with this being a Nintendo product.

Pretty impressive as it took me only 1 lite to notice how much better the screen is then my old switch.

AV - noobs? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Note 9 screen still better then iphone screen.
But hey sure more sales = better.

Post send from my pi 4.

Can't wait for the switch pro model to come out.
And people start saying how much better the lite is because WAAAAAH i no longer have the newest toy in town.

I'd have to see side by side in person, but when Insaw a Lite in person it looked yellow and off. I'm not Digital Foundry, but I think the Original Gangster model is better.

Dude, you seriously think as someone with an interest in picture quality, I'd believe an LCD in a phone is better than a samsung OLED? You're missing the point.

I wasnt saying the iphone xr or 11's LCD screens are better than a Samsung OLED, just that screen quality, when judged by AV noobs, usually revolved around pointless metrics that mean little to the actual experience.

Apple made the right decision with those lower end devices. Sacrifice resolution but still put out a an overall high quality (for an lcd) display.

Nintendo probably didn't have much of choice given that even if you went down a screen size, the resolution wasnt going to drop any further. But instead of prioritizing making sure the other aspects of PQ were as good or superior in their new device, they knew the mainstream media and 'casual' buyers would lap up the fact that this new, smaller display had higher pixel density by virtual of being smaller and automatically draw the unfounded conclusion that it was better.

So congrats on falling for the trick. Newest doesnt necessarily equal better but hey, a sucker is born every day.

Does Switch Lite have scanlines? I think on mine I see something similiar to PSP-2000. It's more subtle, but sometimes it's driving me crazy.

They look identical to me. Lately I've been playing pokemon sword on regular switch + pokemon shield on switch lite and doing the max raid battles using both systems at the same time... holding them right there together like they're a 3ds. Looks exactly the same only 1 is smaller.

I think something is off with my lite screen to me it looks not right. I don't know maybe I have one from a batch with different screens but my launch og screen just seems better. I don't know it looks to pixelated to me. Can't describe exactly what's wrong. Just doesn't feel right. :-/

You seriously need to learn to calm the fuck down in Nintendo related threads.

the lite screens are bad compared to the standard models. they are significantly warmer than the standard model screens (both OG + 2019) and they have noticeable scanlines.

remember the lite is a budget model and the screen is one of the most expensive parts....so quality is expected to be lower.

IMO, the og Switch is best.

Better battery life + bigger screen (it may look a little less sharper, but its not that noticeable) plus i dislike how the lite screen has those black borders they look funny. And the Dock of course.

I prefer the bigger screen for those console experiences on the go, Lite mains appeal is that its cheaper đź’¸

That would be you not liking someone bringing sanity to excessively dumb Switch criticism. That's hardly anyone's shouty voice either.

I do this for politics, general ideas, whatever. I've noticed it only tends to be a problem when someone is heavily invested on one of those sides.

If you are referring to yourself then heavily invested is putting it lightly

This is particularly humorous in light of me spending the week talking about how garbage Nintendo is for quietly supporting the riots and America-is-racist rhetoric, with their BRAND statement.

Go be butthurt months later, somewhere else that Gaf isn't a place to say stupid things, Nintendo or no, with no pushback.

Me butthurt? Now why would you say such a thing? If I was butthurt I would have told you what an idiot you are and how my opinion is superior. The only butthurt I see here is your reply.

Probably because you spend half your time here on Gaf trolling Nintendo threads.

I'm not stupid, and you can knock off the concerned citizen act.

Trolling Nintendo threads?

I like Nintendo a lot. That's why I've owned every console except the N64.

But also in my defence. I thought this was a new thread. Saw the dates. I dare say that it's an error from my side. But I don't troll Nintendo threads. I'll maybe say something slightly trollish regarding the Switch from time to time. But doesn't stop me from playing on my Switch and enjoying the games

Damn, if I knew, I wouldn't buy it. Those scanlines are so annoying.
And I don't exactly agree Lite is budget, Vita was also similar price, but the build and screen quality were so much better.
