OH SHI- : Phantasy Star Universe temporarily collapsed

Creating a universe is a big job, and Sega is taking a mulligan on its Phantasy Star Universe to get the job right. In a letter addressed to Phantasy Star Online users this week, Sega apologized for a series of technical glitches that stymied many users' efforts to play the game online.

The game, which went on sale for the PlayStation 2 and PC in Japan on August 31, suffered problems in its online mode from the outset. When trying to connect online, players were met with various technical issues, incluing blank screens and corrupted character data. As a result, Sega was forced to shut down its servers on the evening of September 3 and is working to fix the problem. Service for testing and troubleshooting purposes is scheduled to resume tomorrow.

The game will formally relaunch in October, and the free 30-day trial included with the game will be calculated from this time. The bad news for early adopters who struggled through the game's issues to play is that "it is possible that during the testing period, player data will be rolled back or deleted."

Well the thing is, how many success online launches are there normally? What was WoW like again the first week? :p

Oh, they mean that you'll be able to continue to play through September (with possible issues), but once the game relaunches in October, you'll probably lose everything anyway?

That's almost as bad. Hell. In some ways, perhaps worse.

There was no wipe. Oh and that was an actual MMORPG too. Many if Sega managed to get even a hundred players in PSU on the same gaming field there would be an excuse! :lol

Theres nothing set about the relaunch besides subscription time. But we're possibly keeping our characters post this wipe unless issues show up that really bug things up.

Nothing will ever beat the Star Wars Galaxies pooch screw. The indignant rantings of Star Wars fans was high comedy indeed.

God knows how they would **** up a "real" MMO's launch, /shudder just thinking about it :lol

They'll never get that far. I don't think Sega understands the concept of a MMO, too much logistics involved. :lol

Come on, guys, what's a character wipe between friends!

In any case, Sega could hardly have been expected to know that, upon the game's release, players would attempt to log into their servers--dozens of them, simultaneously--and attempt to play the game. Who could have known!
