Oh snap! Apple to ditch IBM, switch to Intel chips

IT'S NOT OFFICIAL! WHAT A WRONG THREAD TITLE... Thought I was expecting it for a while, and this explains why Apple did everything in its power to silent Mac Rumors' websites...

If Apple makes OSX available to all Intel hardware, then it's teh awesome. If Apple makes more proprietary uber expensive, impractical boxes out of Intel processors, then it's teh fuck off Apple as usual.

Apple will probably go latter because it's pussy and can't support all them hardware variations.

Sorry. It will be official Monday. Happy?
Being an article on a credible magazine website doesn't make it official... Apple, IBM and Intel decline to comment on the story!

Some MacRumors' guy on their forums have that theory that Microsoft will switch for PowerPC (since they did it with the Xbox 360). I just don't know how true all this could turn out to be...

The zombie rumor returns...

Alright, if this is true, does it mean Intel would start making PPC chips? Who exactly owns the architecture? I did some research and saw that it was jointly developed by IBM, Motorola, and Apple. Does that mean Apple could 'license' it to Intel?

Also, Intel has an IP-sharing agreement with AMD. Does that mean that AMD would get whatever tech was used to put OSX on Intel chips?

Intel makes a variety of RISC style processors so its 'possible' that Intel could be making something for them or that they are jumping over to x86 (less likely). Apple can't license any of IBM's patents so at best they could get an 'incomplete' version of something that's compatible with a G5. Intel makes a whole lot more than their Pentium line of processors so it will be interesting to see exactly WHAT Apple would want to get from Intel.

What about Altivec? Could Intel legally reproduce the Altivec instruction set? OSX has quite a bit invested in that, correct?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO /vader

If they use Intel's new chips with DRM I'll never buy another Mac again.

I refuse to believe this actually going to end up being true this time.

I don't understand how Apple could just switch to a new processor.
Although I doubt they would go with x86, wouldn't a processor switch introduce a HUGE set of problems?
There would be a new instruction set.
So the Apple OS would have to change. So much for optimized PPC performance then.

And how would they roll out this OS? It's not like they can just have 2 version of OSX, 1 for older macs - one for newer ones.

I don't understand processor technology all that much, but it seems like it would be a gigantic switch.

Now, if Apple intros a new Tablet PC with an intel processor, but keeps IBM in their other computers/laptops, then that would be much easier to swallow.

Hey, less is more. Especially when it means a higher percentage of devices that actually behave properly without extensive amounts of taming. If Apple says "fuck you" to Dirty Cho's Cheapshit Taiwanese mobos, sound cards, and other shitty shitty two dollah PC parts - good.

Try not to sound too much like an Ohio hick, ya?

BTW, Apple's mobos comes from the very same "cheapshit" Taiwanese and Chinese venders. There is no mass produced mobos coming from USA, and certainly not from Cleveland! :lol

Eat me Mr. Moneybags. :P

I'm speaking as someone who has plenty of Windows and PC equipment experience under my belt (It's what I used to make a living at before King George II ass fucked the economy). I simply don't have the time or patience to dick around with devices that allegedly work with Windows, but in practice don't.

I reckon Apple's getting their parts from Dirty Wang down the road from Cho's place. :lol

The full-screen was a nice touch that I wasn't sure was intentional until I realized White Man posted it. Perfectly played, as always :lol

Well, that'd be interesting. It still strikes me as rather unlikely, though.

If IBM could use the PowerPC architecture for GameCube, Xbox 360 and Revolution without the conscent of Motorola, Apple can do the same. Altivec was something created by Motorola for G4 processor; I think IBM did something similar way after Motorola did, for the G5 processor...

MacRumors Forums Experts (or so they appear to be) have been pointing out that the switch between PPC and x86 could be less a pain than the switch between 680x0 and PPC. We're only talking about recompiling software with some smokes and mirror than Apple could provide to ease the transition.

Just move it to the Itanium! Intel will finally have a real use for the dang chip. (which is an awesome chip, btw)
This is probably the most probable thing Apple will announce monday...

Alright... Now imagine how fast you could emulate Windows on a x86 Mac OS X computer... Microsoft might have bought Virtual PC, but other companies has offered slower alternatives for years, that could get bullet-fast on this kind of hardware...

dear apple

stop deliberating over chip manufacturers and ship my dual 2 g5 that i ordered 5 days ago - 4 weeks wait? get outta here..

I don't see what the big deal is. Just because they're moving to Intel doesn't mean shit. Intel can still make proprietary chips for Apple.

Shog, they don't WANT to. Big difference. That's why Apple users like Macs so much- things just work.

So I'm assuming they are going to have some kind of variant x86 processor in this thing, because I don't see why anyone would pay inflated Apple prices for x86 equipment that you can get much cheaper elsewhere.

Yeah, Apple probably doesn't ever WANT to rise above the 3~5% marketshare. :lol

So you want the new PowerMacs to be over $10,000? :lol

Jobs: Make us some new shit hoss! And make it reeeeeal pretty! All fancy like with gold trim and diamonds!

Intel: ..................... Yeah..... And we are doing this for what? Whopping 3% of the market? How bought you just use what we got and STFU? How bought that, gold and diamond boy?

Good point. If Apple could develop a PC-friendly version of OS X, why wouldn't they want that potentially massive market? It's easy to call an OS great when it's been designed to run solely on the hardware THEY developed. Put those programmers to task Apple - let's see what you can do with that great big world of hardware out there. You know, the part know as 95% of the rest of the PC market? I like OS X, but have never cared for Apple's close-minded philosophies.

Exactly, I'd migrate to OSX in a minute (well, probably do a dual boot WinXP/OSX config for the VERY few PC games I play) if it were available, no way I'm paying for a MAC for it though.
