Oh Your God! PS Move Killer Coming In 2012 + Some Dude: Natal Is Shit

I love how everybody is forecasting the death of Natal based on some random quotes from GDC.

I know everybody here wants Natal to fail, but this is hilarious :lol

Behold, your savior.

Zelda Wii and Red Steel 2 will hopefully work out. :lol

I experienced lag with RS2 at GamesCom in Cologne :p

To me, Natal is the most ambitious project, and I'm entirely skeptical of how well the tech will work in the hands of normal people. I don't know if people want it to fail, but it just seems like something that isn't going to work like they say it will...if it works at all.

I want the death of Natal, Move and Motion + and a return to the glorious days of brick-sized, battery eating but gloriously-able-to-be-thrown-into-the-wall-in-frustration-and-survive controllers of yore.

I love how people like you who see threads and our mere human's posts from a top-down perspective always follow the script and show up to "laugh" at GAF's Natal hate.

Fuck Natal. Fuck Move.

Fuck spending resources that could be going into quality software and hardware improvements into this waggle-copying shit.

I hope everyone dies.

:(

Edit: I always forget that "Natal" is a homage to a Brazilian city. Fuck that city. Fuck this country. Fuck me. Fuck.

Oh there are people who definitely want it to fail.

:lol

LOL. Matt is such a rube. I still remember when he unironically called anyone who preferred playing Twilight Princess with a GameCube controller "retarded".
I kind of agree with him I'm that respect.

I'm actually surprised ign published that they heard natal was "shit"...Microsoft can't be happy about that even if it's false. That's pretty ballsy of ign

You might have a point. But to me it's equally hilarious when people base their hype merely on cgi and promises.
We had that back in 2005 with Sony's infamous E3 trailers..
But hey, neogaf:believe

Half of the article sounds like Matt is just playing a joke on us or something, he's even laughing about how ridiculous it sounds.

Nothing's at stake. It's not like he or IGN have an awful lot of dignity or credibility to lose.

Don't worry. I am finding this motion control wars hilarious. People choosing sides on what is basically the same exact thing across all boards on which tech is superior. This article was easily the best in terms of lols.

They could loose an exclusive microsoft review for posting such rumors and side talk. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Who knows if he's telling the truth, but with all of the PR fluff coming out of GDC so far, I'm sorta glad to see something that seems to be against the grain.

Sigh, why do these conferences always get the best out of people

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

I love "insider" stuff like this on podcasts and the like. Its so rare you get to hear people in the industry just rant about shit, even if it is a bit exagaratted.

See Brazil's post

There is just some pure unadulterated hate for the motion control movement. I'm embracing it but there are some people are treating Natal/Move like the dude who banged their girlfriend

Bu-bu-but it's X time away from release!! It'll surely improve!!

Was it comparable to the Move demos? :P

heard (precious little) about natal from some dev friends working on it. sounds like it's limited/fairly hamstrung, this isn't a shock, but I bet you will see some interesting things for it. with all of this stuff, I feel like the follow-through is always what has been expected.. natal and move are just reactionary responses from ms and sony, which seems silly, and I would expect there'd been a fair amount of infighting at each company as to "should we really do this?" Of course once you get the ball rolling, there's really no turning back (see the PSP)

personally, motion controls (in any event) are something very interesting to me as a developer; given the choice I would like to be working on a wii motion game right now, boom blox still stands as some of the most video game fun I have had in recent years. But market be damned, there's really no money in it unless you are Nintendo, historically, and even they barely fart out a (relatively) good motion-controlled game themselves, each year.

to summarize my thoughts then, motion controls still great potential, existing and coming tech still promising, the reality I expect won't make good on it, this trend will pass.. (maybe wii 2 will nail it!) As usual this is just a bunch of foregone conclusion, so for whatever that's worth..

Yeah, motion control really hasn't worked out.

I remember an interview with Itagaki right after Ninja Gaiden 2 came out, where he said that he doesn't trust motion control because they lack the exaggerate response of button presses, where the character will do all kinds of crazy shit with very little physical motion from the player. He said that this is why people game.

And he was right.

God this sucks. We've got people arguing now over which waggle is better, is PS Sports better than Wii Sports, is Natal the next power glove...The one thing I've learned this gen is motion controls should not be a default control scheme but a compliment to existing ones such as using a pointer to aim. Hell even Nintendo realizes this. SMG, Punchout, SSBB, NSMBWii all use motion controls sparingly. It should be treated like rumble. A feature, not an end all be all. This shit is going to be standard from here on out though. This is the new dual analog sticks. I do like the split controller interface though.

I think the biggest problem with motion controls is that everyone does it differently. The recognition system in place doesn't take this into account a lot of times. Some things are generic so they work for pretty much anyone (shaking to reload a weapon), but other things need extremely specific movements and some people can't get those done, or they spazz out under pressure. Heh, my roommate does that all the time, which is why I call him a button masher. Motion controls aren't good for spazzing, which is how a lot of people play.

If we used more controlled responses for games, then I think we'd see less "waggle", but that's just not the case. Personally, I haven't had any problems with motion controls and would love to see more people use them, but lots of people simply don't know how to play that way and it causes all of these "control" issues.

I agree, but the moment a gesture fails to be recognized despite "calm” movements the illusion of motion controls disappears. Putting in Tiger Woods is a perfect example. This is exacerbated by gesture based canned animations. I will say move looks more precise in some respects, but it's probably still prone to these basic failures at times.

Hire this man!

Can't say I'm shocked to hear about Natal. I am however a bit annoyed that Arc/Move is going a bit slow (or at least some of the current games are). Hopefully they'll get that shit straightened out before launch.

The article wasn't a total downer on Move. It just pointed out (correctly) that the software they've shown so far needs work.

From the article:

Move's hardware is more than competent and there's certainly a lot of potential, but most of it remained untapped at the event. This opinion is seconded by the developer, which is working closely with the device. They tell me that they believe it will ultimately outperform the Wii remote in responsiveness and say that their own tests are already proving that true. I ask if there is the kind of lag I experienced at Sony's demo and they say no, that it's very fast and reliable when programmed correctly. They add that it still has some calibration issues like the Wii remote, but that it's still an improvement.

It sounds like the software was just not ready to be shown yet. Honestly, I think they should've waited and showed Move off with games people care about as well as games that have actually had enough time in the oven to show off the controls properly.

Hopefully we'll finally see Ape Escape 4 at E3, and it'll show off the controls in a nice way.
