Okay guys, for my first time pc gaming......

Echoing the Crysis recommendations, you should also get Witcher & The Witcher 2. Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Gemini Rue, Telltale Adventure Games, The Next BIG Thing, Plain Sight, Dawn of War 1 & 2, Company of Heroes. (There really is too much stuff)

And by god, man! If you haven't yet played Half Life 2, do so, should be the first game you play.

Amazing FPS campaign, sad how many there are. Play it, enjoy it and remember to engage Delta difficulty.

You should be able to play the game between High or Very High depending on your resolution. At 1680x1050 I average in the low 40s on Very High with a 5850 which is slightly better than your card.

High is a safe bet even for 1080p.

Crysis' visuals will blow you away initially (don't forget to check out some mods), but once that's over and done with and you start to actually play it right, you'll have a lot of fun. For some time at least...

I highly recommend you get The Witcher 2. That beastly rig of yours can run it maxed out. If you're fine with it being an RPG n' all.

At around 30-40 fps, minus ubersampling and with occasional hitching if he has all other settings on high.

Wish I could run the game like that. I had to tweak the shit out of the user.ini until I found a perfect balance between performance and IQ.

hmm... this could be useful.

Any reason for the top of the line expensive cpu + 8GB ram and the low-mid end gpu?

You could have saved money and gotten a 2500k (same results in gaming) and bought a 6870 or preferably a 6950.

You'll probably be able to run most games near maxed (apart from the witcher 2 and metro with that gpu) , but not at 60 fps in games like crysis or just cause 2 or mafia 2 or bc2.

Are you saying the 6850 is close to low end? I'd say it's situated firmly in the middle.

Yeah it performs on par with a gtx 460 which I'd say is definitely a good midrange card.

It's slower than a 5850 and about as fast as a gtx460 ,which in turn are only ~25 percent faster than a 4870.

It does better in bc2 than I expected, but it's like I said, he won't get great framerates in more demanding games.
Average framerates of 30-40 in the more demanding games means framedrops under 30 fps most likely.

It's close to mid range yes (I said low-mid because the 460 was considered a mid range card over a year ago when it was released), just not a beastly pc as people are setting him up to expect (from the 2600k cpu I guess).
Hence me asking him why he chose that over a 2500k and a bit less ram so he'd have 50 dollars more to spend on a higher end gpu.
Bang for buck etc.

I agree with you that he could have had a better gaming machine. Was just saying that a 6850 ain't too bad overall. It's a solid choice for most games.

Play all the Half-Life games. This can not be said enough times. I just finished them all recently, and I was blown away.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind having one over my aging 4870, but if I was going to splurge on a high end cpu I'd spend a bit more on the gpu too.

It's a good buy for a budget gaming pc right now.
For gaming, his beastly cpu is definitely being held back/rendered a bit pointless by the gpu.

It'll struggle with witcher 2 too, and battlefield 3 is coming up which I assume is a game he'll want to play too.
Nothing as depressing as paying big bucks for a new pc then end up having to dial settings down 3 months later in the next game because you didn't divide the budget right.

If you've played one FPS, you've pretty much played them all. So you might as well play the best one first:
System Shock 2
.

Sorry if this offends anyone, but why's is that people buy stuff (consoles, handhelds, PCs) first, then wonder what games to get? :p

For that matter, like with consoles, shouldn't there be (or there is?) a topic/thread with "Hey you got a gaming PC, here's the games you need to play"? With pics, suggestions, etc.

Anyway, on-topic..yep, get Steam, get Team Fortress 2 for free, check for their weekly deals.

I don't know if there is, but that sounds nice. Something divided into sections, to show the different DD services, genres, and so on. I know there are a few threads about particular indie games but it'd be cool to see one expanded on for those new to PC as a gaming platform. A "PC Starter's Guide" thread or something.

His CPU will help if he plans to emulate, or is using the computer for editing or other processor-intensive applications. I mean, you know that already -- it's a given -- but I don't think it's fair to say the investment was not necessarily worthwhile.

There is one, but people don't use search.

I'd love to do this but the problem is that if you have a gaming PC, you have access to a library of quality games that totals about as much as every console released in the last 20 years put together. I currently have 600 games installed on my hard drive, from Doom to Crysis 2, Might & Magic to Fallout: New Vegas. I wouldn't even begin to imagine how big my recommendations list would be. :-p

I just bought crysis 1. What should I expect? Is it fun ? Are the keyboard and mouse controls easy to use?

Yes to the last two questions. Crysis is one of the best FPS campaigns ever, right up there with the likes of Wolf 3D and Doom for me, though completely different in its playstyle. Playing on Delta with AI tweaks makes it a deadly game of cat and mouse, which is a breath of fresh air after the bombardment of setpiece-driven highly-guided experiences in recent years.

For further encouragement, it contains at least a couple of levels that are probably the best in the genre, and the other levels evoke the feeling of being a predator instilling panic in the enemy ranks with each personnel you take down.

The graphics made me take notice of Crysis, but it's the gameplay that endures long past the initial visual spectacle.

Apostrophes do not belong in plurals.

How do you actually do that, though? I mean: look how huge and unwieldy the DS recommendation thread is, and then think about how many games there are on the PC compared to the DS -- how many random indie titles, older classics available through services like GOG, great multiplats that are better on PC, cool PC exclusives from the last five years....

Maybe someone could put together a really basic primer that's like "here are three games that will push your system, here's one really great PC exclusive each from like eight genres, here are links to the Steam and GOG threads so you can do more research" but honestly I'm not sure where else to take it.

Mad offtopic here but how does possession determine spelling of someone/something that ends with an s?

Our only bus's (?) tires were slashed.

Omit the second s.

So in other words just end with the apostrophe when it comes to possession of nouns ending in s?
Yes.

I have seen it written both ways, so I wouldn't call it a hard and fast rule. But generally it's written with only an apostrophe.

You picked a great time to start PC gaming, TF2 just turned free to play. One of the best multiplayer games out there right now.
I would personally recommend just buying the orange box though if you haven't played HL2 + eps and portal, you would also get a premium TF2 account if that matters to you. Portal 2 is also great on PC. But keep in mind the steam summer sale should start any day now, so I would hold off on buying any steam games until then since essentially every single game will be on sale.
Starcraft 2 is great if you like RTS games, and Witcher 2 is an RPG experience you'd be hard pressed to find on consoles (at least for now).
Edit: and as many have mentioned, Steam is your friend, especially during the upcoming sale.

Download Steam. Do not pass GO, do not collect $200.

Proceed straight to Team Fortress 2.
Better idea, download Steam and buy the Valve Complete Pack. You will not regret it.

(or you can wait for it to go on sale)

Crysis is a ton of fun till you get to the aliens. I load it up whenever I make a significant upgrade to my primary gaming PC.
I never understood why people say this. The sections with the aliens are probably some of the most intense FPS sections I've ever played. It felt like a real warzone, which is something most games still can't pull of well. I definitely liked the second half of the game more than the first.

Batman Arkham Asylum, NBA 2k11 if you don't want to play online, Starcraft II, Darksiders, Mass Effect 1 and 2 for starters.

I'll echo this. The game felt more punishing and challenging once the aliens appeared since you're against something of equal footing or greater. The korean nanosuits went down easily enough. I did think the alien ship level dragged out a bit too long but that might be due how disoriented I'd feel.

Once you get to the part where you kill the general in the mountain stop playing Crysis. From there it turns into another shitty boring corridor shooter.

Crysis is an awesome game. GOTY 2007.

Haters gonna hate because their PCs couldn't run it.

It would be great if the damn thing would start on 1080p screens without forcing a 24 hz refresh rate.

Pisses me off and Crytek have done fuck all about it....
