On Bus/Train Etiquette

What is your stance?

Personally, it's every man for himself besides elderly, the sick, and children.

But when people want a seat, they get mean. I've had dudes put their crotches in my face space, and women purposefully smack me with their purse and glare. So I have lost all compassion over the years besides those select groups.

Every man for himself other than the disabled, elderly, or little kids who want to sit next to their parents.

I don't think I've ever experienced anyone being a dick to get a seat. Then again I take the bus so early that it's barely full.

On the one hand, I will get up for the elderly, disabled or pregnant women.

On the other hand, I am a notorious manspreader.

Anyone can take a seat before me. I'll stand and pretend I'm surfing while all you chumps stare at your books, phones and iPads.

I usually stand. If I sit I give my seat gladly to people who look like they need it more than me. Usually not children, young people or dogs.

It's not surfing.

It's getting thrown around like a ragdoll, pulling your arms out of the socket, holding on for dear life in a 40 minute bus ride while those who are rich in life sit comfortable in seats, awaiting the day ahead.

Can I just give a big fuck you to all those people who sit next to you when there's empty seats everywhere? Thanks

First come, first served, for the most part. Obviously would offer a seat to an elderly person, and while I would want to do it for pregnant women, that is a fucking minefield best avoided unless it is very obvious.

I think it's universally known that anyone who takes up more than one space on a busy train or bus is a prick.

I use the New York City subway exclusively to get around. I don't have a car.

I usually always stand if it's crowded. My thinking is that I'm still a somewhat young man in good enough shape to have no issues standing 10-30 minutes at a time. I'd rather leave the seat open for someone that really needs it.

Other than that I sit when there's plenty of free seating around. I'll also swap seats or move over if I see two people that want to sit with each other.

I try to be as courteous and as helpful as I can. Others on the MTA usually are too. Unless it's rush hour, then everyone sucks and is going to be an asshole because being sardined in a small pace isn't enough of a pain.

Oh you sweet summer child, what you're seeing is a terrible person being terrible by taking up more seats than necessary.

Hey kiddo, we don't see the rest of the bus. Maybe it's half empty or she could be moving her stuff if someone asks to sit there.

What am I supposed to see here except some creep taking pictures of strangers on a bus?

She's taking up 3 seats with her bags. I've seen and heard strangers getting into scraps on the TTC (Toronto public transport) because of this shit.

Besides the obvious groups, I will get up for those who are carrying a lot of things and I am not.

Also, if there is a crazy person on the bus, please do not provoke them. Please.

I hate people who sit next to you and go out their way to make conversation with you even though you have earphones in and there's empty seats elsewhere. They are the worst.

The worst part is when the weirdos try starting a conversation with you.
I have a friendly face, this is a big problem for me. I also get asked directions constantly too which I always do try to help.

Then again I've also been hit on by women while riding the subway which isn't so bad!

My etiquette:

Don't take up and extra seat with your bags or feet.

Don't push people aside or cut in front of people and run and get a seat like it's life or death.

The only time I will sit is if there are a good amount of seats available. I don't feel like dealing with the BS of trying to figure out if this person is old enough for me to offer him or her my seat.

Fuck public transport in general. People touching you, talking to you, breathing on you.

Nah, I'll drive and avoid all that drama.

People who
  • Stand in the vestibule and don't move down to let more people board, so you're all balls-to-backsides while they've got space to browse their newspapers.
  • Prefer to stand in the doorway instead of getting off, letting people out, then getting back on again.
  • Fart.
  • Listen to shit music on shit headphones that goes tss tss tss tss tss tss.
  • Don't take their backpack off.
  • Trip you up with one of those tiny wheeled suitcases that would easily fit in your fucking watch pocket you lazy fuck.

Are all going on a special train to a special hell.

People that enter the subway only to stop right away. As if their brain has turned off and the don´t know how to act in this situation. Hurrr, go left, hurrr go right, hurrr further back, hurrr. You´re in everyone´s way, MOVE.

Same for when they get of the escalator, just stop. As if the choice of going forward, left or right is just too much to process for their puny brains. Motherfucker, i´m gonna step on the back of your shoes.

People that rush in at the stop, before others could get out, just to get a seat, uncultured swine.

I'll offer my seat if need be. Usually there's no need.

I hate it when people talk to me on the bus, at least on the way to work. It's early in the morning!:/

My biggest pet peeve are people that blast music without headphones on. Like really? You have to do that? Not everyone likes your gangsta rap. Stop it.

As far as buses go, the first row seats are usually reserved for the elderly. I just go to mid/back of the bus to avoid that situation.

I'm VERY fortunate that while I use public transit I travel at times, and board at stops, that allow me good seating options. Overcrowded buses/trains are miserable.

I've witnessed and experienced some bad encounters on transit, and yeah it does damage your view of your fellow humans when it happens over and over. The worst that's happened to me is being physically assaulted when someone thought I was standing too close to their girlfriend, who was sitting behind me. I know I wasn't doing anything wrong, as I'm the most courteous person you are likely to meet but try explaining that to someone on a full bus.

People are terrible. Best to just keep to yourself as much as possible in those situations. I'm not going to let an insecure person ruin my day.

People who don't sit down despite there being plenty of free seats are the absolute worst. On the double decker buses I get everyday it's always younger school kids who do this, they just block the stairs and create congestion all so they can stand with their mates.

Headphones are a godsend
People still ask for directions from me even with headphones on.

The other day I had a woman chase me down for directions to the nearest J train subway stop while I was leaving Whole Foods with groceries. She was saying "sir!?" which I ignored at first because even at almost 30 now it's still weird hearing people call me sir in public.

This one always gets me, what are they afraid of? the train/bus will suddenly depart and they'll never get home?

Conductors/Drivers would look out for this, and theres always a gap between the last person off and doors closing.

I completely forget about the damn backpacks. That makes me insane. Take off your freaking backpack and put it in front of you. Nothing worse than standing behind someone with a backpack. You cannot get around the person and they are constantly hitting you with it.

Also, move into the train! People stand by the door which creates a hugle bottleneck. There is space for about 15 people in the middle of the train but no one can there because you cannot get get by the wall of people.

Jesus Christ.

I sit when possible but sometimes it makes me anxious because you never know who was sitting there before you. I've sat in seats that looked fine upon approach but after sitting I quickly realize that I am not soaked in someone else's disgusting sweat (YES this can happen, don't underestimate how gross some people are.) Had to wash my clothes and jacket immediately because I smelled like death.

If you have the stamina to stand it can save you from a LOT of bullshit.

I stand by the door #theproblem

I do move down the seats if it's actually busy, otherwise I'll stand at the door since I'm usually the first stop and I'm weird

I definitely stand by the door in the train, only because I HAVE been kicked off the train before when it was crowded.

I get out, people get in, and too many people got in so my ass was stuck outside.
