On today's lack of cheat codes in games...

What games have micro transaction cheats?

None that i know. The thing is some games microtransactions/dlc to unlock something is doing the same thing that cheats used to do. While some DLC is made after the game is released, alot of games ask u to pay for DLC that is already in the disk.

I always assumed it was a developer thing for debugging but not having to run through the entire game.
Eventually yes, they did become "features" that were put in for fun.
That being said, most games aren't difficult enough for me to miss them and maybe because I'm older now, but I don't find messing with games and trying weird shit out entertaining. I have that up after GTA SA.

Honestly, I'd like to think new game + are our new cheat codes.

Games became fair and orthologic (having to finish a 2D game with three lives was a method to stretch the game's 5 levels out as much as possible), gamers became proficient enough to hack the games.

Chievo's killed cheats. I thought GTAV did it well, if you use cheats you can't chievo. More than fair compromise and it's super disappointing how cheats are essentially non existent in most games nowadays. Chievo's killed Tips & Tricks magazine(kidding, sorta). It was always a treat as a kid to beat a game and then fuck around with all the cheats afterwards.

If you play on PC though:

Anyone remember Crackdown's Key's to the City? That was super super fun. More games should have done something similar.

Mods are pretty much the new cheats. The old GTA games had a riot mode, now you need to install a mod to get that.

Might near-unlimited save files / chapter selects have something to do with this? Used to be if ya wanted to replay a level or certain part of a story you'd have to go through the whole game up to that point again. Cart saves usually maxed out at 4 in my experience but with FF7 for instance with just 1 memory card I can have up to 15 saves in different parts of the game. Chapter selects another thing, like if ya missed an item or rank just go right back and re-do and it carries on to your main save or somethin'.

It sucks, but I'm glad that there's fans out there that'll fix that mistake.

Why would having access to a save discourage a dev from putting cheats into a game? That doesn't really make any sense.

Level select was a pretty common cheat back in the day but now isn't really needed cause of the things I mentioned. It also makes it so you can go back pretty easily and grab something ya might've missed an is now unobtainable or in a place ya won't be able to go back to for a long while o.o idk it was just a guess/question on my part.

Passwords were more common though.

I think it's because gaming is now looked at in a higher regard. Most of the triple A titles don't want their serious images being diluted by a silly big head code. That, and perhaps that it's impossible to hide them now. The internet really wasn't as big of a factor as it is now.

I think for that kind of experience you have to play on PC and download mods now in days.
