Once-hyped games that are now completely forgotten

Warhawk, anyone? I was going through my PS+ archives and found Starhawk single player, and had to take a good few moments to remember what that was.

this game was hyped to hell and back as 'a true console experience on the 3DS' and it was just trash

Trash or not (I disagree), the game later released on Wii U, PS3, 360, PC, PS4, and XBO and also received a sequel. I don't think it fits here at all.

Has anyone mentioned Homefront? That game got a massive ad campaign and they were going on about how great the story was going to be. They were comparing it to Half life 2 in some interviews. Then the game came out and the story was awful, the campaign was short , and the mp was half assed. So damn disappointing. I guess it got a sequel so maybe it doesn't belong here but the hype for that game was just crazy.

Division doesnt really belong in this thread.

If there's a thread for screwed up post launch support that would be the place.

Top selling new IP isn't really the dustbin of history compared to games like Brink.

the best example is Fallout 4
latest

this game was hyped like it was the greatest game ever created, and few months after it was released, they forgot it like it never came out

no game has ever reached the insane hype of Fallout 4, not even GTA V

Considering the amount of internet bitching I hear about Fallout 4 to this day, definitely doesn't fit

Always thought this pulled off the hard part (design and netcode to do a reasonable job of 128 vs 128) but was held back by simple stuff like having a poor tutorial that didn't really explain the gametypes, and holding too much behind the upgrade system so the game felt too slow/simple to anyone trying it out for a couple hours. Once you had most of the upgrades, understood the gametypes and had found a decent group to play with it was a lot of fun.

Was there any hype for Evolve? All I remember felt incredibly forced by the publisher to try to get popular in the esports segment.
Well it was from the Left 4 Dead guys so there was plenty of excitement right up until the DLC information came out. I downloaded it on GWG and played the intro where you learn each class and Jesus Christ, how do you go from a game as lean as L4D to that. Just seemed like the kind of game where the tactics would end up being pretty much the same every time as well.

I remember people being so excited for this prior to the launch of the 360 but after it came out I barely heard anyone talking about it. It's a shame too as the game is really quite good.

Nintendo's (well, co-developed anyway) first mature rated game, Geist. For Nintendo fans, this game was a big fucking deal in the lead up to its release in late summer '05. As a loyal Nintendrone, before it came out I loved to pop this bad boy into discussions when the other kids in school argued that Nintendo just made kid's games. Then when it finally did drop, it sucked. The possession mechanic was kind of neat, but other than that it was choppy, repetitive, and kind of generic. I don't think anyone remembered this game existed after the year 2005.

Yep. it's a real shame since there were some great ideas in the game. If only the core gameplay was better then we could have had a great new franchise.

I think Warhawk is fondly remembered by lots of folks. Starhawk, not so much.

A ton of games fit this - forgotten to a degree all the way to completely forgotten.

/opinionated rant

Hype works both ways.. it sells magazines..well now it gets clicks and also sells games.
Video game publications are incentivized to hype as are publishers. They are, to a large degree symbiotic.

in my opinion almost all AAA games get a level of hype. I mean if people were like oh yeah Asscreed 18.. is going to suck or hey Anthem really isn;t that good we played it..and it is meh.. games wouldn;t sell and no one would tune in to check it out. People were hyping Mafia 3, Dishonored 2, everything really that was a big AAA. it help pubs and publications. content and game sales.

Generally, things are like OMG Mass Effect Andromeda is going to be the next epic chapter.. endless hype and articles etc.. reports "I played it and it was fun" build and maintain hype. Then a game releases, is scored and if it is realllllly good. The community picks it up. If not it is on to the next one for mainstream games media. the media is run by hype and pre orders.

/end rant

That's my feeling. The publisher was pushing a lot. Some journalist were saying it is great when you play it.
But globally it was a big 'I don't care'.

Deserved. Its a fucking coaster now.

They shut off the servers, so yes. Great game though. I ended up with a pseudo-clan and we used to organise our assaults in the middle of everyone else running around like headless chickens. I think we settled on SVER in the end.

I've seen Brink mentioned a few times. Deservedly so in terms of sales and quality at launch, but also because I think a lot of people misunderstood what it was.

Case in point, I remember people complaining about the grenades not working since they weren't killing enemies properly; when it seems like the design decision was to make grenades less annoying than in other games, so that the affected gameplay rather than fully interrupting it by anyone hit by a nade.

The game also required a kind of clockwork coordination that one couldn't really find in random games and was hard to get going in groups of friends who played more casually (as I did). Plus because it looked like it was 240p on release and kept dropping connection, it was hard to get people to keep playing.

I remember tweeting to the Dev that it was, literally, the buggiest game I had ever played. They even had a bug in the trailer.

Does anyone remember Blasto?

Hah, good call. I remember Sony pushed this thing pretty hard. I guess it underperformed because that was the last anyone ever heard of Blasto. I played it and remember enjoying it well enough.

Blasto went away because of the untimely death of celebrity Phil Hartman, who not only voiced Blasto, but was the Head Creative on the project.

An episode of Fact Hunt by Guru Larry actually talks about this, I've timestamped the Blasto segment. Pretty sad. https://youtu.be/ZrmCf9r5J0A?t=1m11s

I remember seeing an ad for this fucking thing in literally every gaming magazine for at least a solid year.
Never heard shit about the actual game.
Anyone here actually play this?

Holy shit, I cannot believe how much advertising I've seen for this thing yet have never once seen this game in motion. I'm mind blown right now.

Remember it was going to be GOTY, be the biggest indie game ever had a massive marketing push even took key place in Sonys E3 conference

I remember back when asking what the gameplay was about, even w/o any snark or malice, would make people go absolutely insane.

Truth be told I had forgotten about Warhawk and Starhawk until you mentioned them. I think I still have Starhawk shrinkwrapped somewhere.

Speaking of that anyone remember Code name Steam? Maybe that wasn't hyped because of the art style but that game is beyond forgotten

Codename Steam was never really hyped though. It was immediately ignored after its reveal, aside from maybe the FE Amiibo announcements. The art style and general graphical design pretty much instantly killed it, and then the reviews were mediocre when it came out due to some gameplay issues, like long enemy turns and limited customization for the small cast.

NMS should not be forgotten. It should be remembered by all of the fools who actually fell for it and they should learn from it.

As for Battleborn, I don't think that game got much hype. It was kind of just forgotten from the moment it was announced.

Remember Me.

Just replayed this since I upgraded my PC. It's still one of the best looking game worlds ever created.

Neo Paris is amazing...I just wish you could do more in it.

Would love to see Dontnod given another shot at a triple A title. They're certainly more of a well known entity after Life is Strange.
