Can someone explain the logistics behind this to me?
Is it just "popular IP = a lot of people will at least check out 1 or 2 episodes"?

If you've made it far enough to have a position at Netflix were you can greenlight new shows you HAVE to know this shit will suck, get hated by nearly everyone and then cancelled after 1 season. Right?
Nope. Oda was the one who actually always wanted to do a Live action. He always received a lot of proposals and never felt like they were the right ones. Back in 2017 he finally found a proposal that made him confident and so he made a deal with tomorrow studios. Only in 2020 was when netflix made a deal with tomorrow studios to produce it and distibute it.
So this means that the show was already happening either way. It wasnt a netflix idea

Nobody asked for this. And in this case, it's worse than bebop because Bebop is a fairly grounded show with a lot of western influences. One Piece has monstrously unrealistic stringbean character designs and unrealistic acting and action drawings that's a HUGE part of its appeal, take that away and you have a bunch stupid looking cosplayers acting like high schoolers doing the naruto run and think that anime expressions are possible with their faces.

These execs who greenlit this don't know fucking anything ffs.

One Piece is such a big IP that I find it hard to believe they would let some talentless grifters do their "own modern take" on the story for some easy Netflix bucks.
Why not, the entirety of DC is billion dollars worth of IP and according to James Gunn the previous execs were handing them out to any hack director like "they were party favors".

It took Toho more than one try to get the right kind of partnership with American studios for decent Godzilla movies.

The comic book industry is notorious for trampling all over creators when it comes to their legacy and money. A difference with One Piece is that Oda is still the golden goose laying the eggs.
