OPINION: Wii U, best console to own in 2014, easily

My problem with Wii U is that you can play 3 games a year( I dont like every Nintendo game). Fucking frustrating.

Most of Nintendo games are focused on being family friendly, donkey Kong is not niche it was a huge franchise, and pikmin look like telly tubby toys was also family friendly, then you have Mario games. There nothing like platinum where all there games are niche and bomb.

...what?

This topic really brings out the people who favour aesthetics over gameplay.

Tempted to make a Vita list.

I'd put the Vita library against the Wii U any day of the week.

But I don't bother, know why? I am happy with the system. Actually content. I don't care that it's not popular and I certainly don't recommend it to any but the most hardcore of my friends. It's clearly a niche system. That's ok. perfectly ok.

There seems to be some sort of unconscious (or not) effort to prop up the Wii U on GAF lately. Look at the Bayonetta nonsense - there's acres of text meta-complaining about port beggars, far outpacing the actual complaints. Why the insecurity? If it's so awesome then what else do you need?

List wars do not a good case make. And there's scores of "I got a Wii U! What's good?" Threads with the same handful of answers.

I don't know, I just wonder sometimes if the Nintendo hardcore people are having a collective nervous breakdown. They hate it when people pull out the "kiddy" card but are all too willing to play the "brown boobs rawr" card the other way. Wii U is not doing well. It's a shame but it doesn't mean much other than the Wii u is only good for Nintendo exclusives. It's a lesson learned, it says nothing about taste either way, it's simply limited. If you love Nintendo more than any other developer then you are good. But they can't fight the whole world.

Opinions, man. I've been playing video games for over 30 years. Wii U doesn't interest me much. What does that say? Nothing. Other than what I just typed. It's not a condemnation or a failing of appreciation. It's me not liking a certain band or director or style of mouse or symmetrical sticks...
Agreed. The mentality seems disappointingly widespread. People have different priorities in what they want out of a console, maybe the WiiU doesn't fulfill that for everyone, and the amount of vitriol being directed toward mere disinterest is ridiculous.

If you absolutely love first party Nintendo games (I tried but I just do not like them anymore) then its an amazing console to own. Sure, there are third party games there that are worthwhile but I just stopped caring. I loved Bayonetta when I played it and was real excited for Bayo 2 but now I just don't care, not sure why. The console is back in its box and I just have no desire to take it out, but I guess its not a surprise. After SNES, I just lost interest in Nintendo consoles. My brother and I bought an N64, rarely played it, same with Gamecube. I did buy and enjoy Wii ,especially after importing Tatsunoko vs Capcom and putting homebrew channel on it, and it was partly why I bought a Wii U.

My 9 year old nephew begged me to get him Mario Kart 8 even though he does not have a Wii U so I surprised him with it and he absolutely loved it. I was happy that he found so much joy in playing MK8 and I thought about giving him my Wii U so it could actually get some use. The only reason I haven't so far is because if SMT x FE comes out then I must have it. Well, that and his dad is kind of Nazi'ish (nephew got Smash Bros Brawl for his birthday once and his dad made my nephew give it back to my sister because he didn't like it. And yes, I did tell what the game was before it was purchased so that just pissed me off).

I use my PS4 more than any other console right now but I'm not going to say it has the best library. I regret buying The Last of Us Remastered since the hype told me it was so amazing but its just eh to me. It's all just my stupid opinion which no one has to agree or disagree with. I'm sure that's what I'll be called after this post, heh.

On the flip side, I have and will always love Nintendo handhelds. I just got my MH4G Limited Edition New 3DS yesterday and its beautiful. Love love love it.

Nintendo are on such a huge different level of polish, though. I've only played W101 from Platinum but it did not have Nintendo quality polish.
You can't really make a distinction from one or two games. Someone who's played Platinum's entire catalog but only played say Steel Diver or Mario Sunshine or one of EAD's other less polished titles might have the opposite opinion from yours.

W101 suffers from lack of explanation and is pretty complex, I recommend the Vanquish and Bayonetta duo to start with. The mechanics are simple and intuitive, only need to learn 1-2 things like how Witch Time works. You can't get more arcady than these. They're extremely polished, every aspect of the gameplay is tuned flawlessly.

Being primarily a PC gamer, I agree with the op. Planning on getting a ps4/x1 eventually, but nothing on those excites me at the moment.

I absolutely agree. It worries me. If Nintendo is doing this much fantastic work and being met with awful financial performance, what lesson are they going to take from that? Hell, what lesson is the industry going to take from that? Hell, what lesson do we maybe have to take from that? Quality doesn't matter?

Console makers need third party support.

Nintendo made some of my favorite games of all time, just saying they really don't make niche games like platinum do. there games are focused on being family friendly but there still damn good.

Let's see here.

Games I would buy a console to play:

3DS (The only current gen console I own)
A Link Between Worlds
Fire Emblem Awakening
Super Mario 3D Land

PSVita
???

Wii U
Super Mario 3D World
Bayonetta 2 (not actually released here yet, but it's close enough that I'm fairly certain it won't get canceled and will actually be quite good)

PS4
???

Xbox One
???

Multiplatform games and ports generally don't factor into console purchases for me because I play those on PC whenever I can.

I would say that based on my personal preferences and the current library available on each console, it seems the Wii U is the next console I should buy. It is a shame, then, that I can't afford one. Maybe by the time Zelda comes out...

In terms of exclusives, it's not even a contest. Xbox One and PS4 are seriously lacking in that area. I think they will both begin to catch up next year though (and I'll eventually buy them).

PC for multi-plats + WiiU + 3DS is the best possible way to game short of getting every device, IMO.
This is the holy mother god of raptor Jesus combo. Never have I had a selection of games so deep, with such variety as this gen. Relatively new to the pc scene but,
pc now and foreva!

Yeah, but in general home consoles are pretty barren at this point. Home consoles used to be so much more varied and worth early-adopting :/ Maybe it's just the kind of games I enjoy. I'm probably not buying a PS4 until Tekken 7 gets ported.

I can't agree with this statement at all. It is a great system if you love Nintendo games and nothing else. I would hate to miss out on all the big 3rd party titles.

Yes you're right. That's why I bought a Wind Waker bundle in along with Tropical Freeze. Perfect console for a PC gamer. It's not even close...

It's a great console, but by itself just not enough.

The only RPG coming out is X. All other companies that focus their strength on RPG's are going PS4 and XBone. If you don't care for RPG's, then Wii U is enough.

Sports games. I forget if any is coming on out on Wii U given how EA isn't exactly happy with them. If you don't care for sports game outside the weird oddities like Mario Golf, then Wii U is enough.

Racing/Sim type games like GT. Same deal.

Fighting games outside Smash. Same deal.

Big name games like MGS (or anything Konami) or GTA (or anything Rockstar). Same deal.

FPS. Same deal.

Minecraft. Same deal.

I'm beating a dead horse here - it's a great console, but by no means does it have enough variety to entice a lot of people to own it.

The games listed just don't appeal to me. If there were a lot more games like ZombiU, I'd probably think about it, but currently thats the only game I could see myself playing on it.

Reggie is that you? >.>

That said, Nintendo consoles have always had great exclusives. I'd definitely feel like I was missing out if I didn't have a Wii U.

Just picked up a Wii U, $150 (CAD) on clearance for the deluxe at Target. #1 game played so far is advance wars on virtual console. MK8 is decent, and Monster Hunter 3U just arrived so I'll be trying that tonight. Never played a MH game before so this will be interesting.
Dude, I played Advance Wars for the first time last month. It took me forever to get through field training, but once I did and hit the campaign, I was terribly addicted. It's such an awesome game. And you're in for a treat with MH3U. Get ready to dump at least 200 hours in it.
Wii U droughts are a relative slog from time to time, but the sheer amount of quality that has graced the console whenever it peaks it's head is impossible to ignore as far as I'm concerned. It doesn't have "every game" on it, but its still varied enough in its offering and holds no doubt the best quality exclusives.
Thankfully, VC is actually getting a little better in terms of selection, so I use those to fill in the time between new releases.

lol.

You clearly don't play Nintendo games.

RPG, Strategy, Sports, Racing Sims, Shooters... you know... those niche genres

Genres are meaningless categories.

Imagine if Wii U had 1x of every sport made in the Mario Sports universe with arcady gameplay, and 1x in the Wii Sports style with motion controls.

Wouldn't even make a dent in the EA sports market, assuming hardware parity and excluding other external factors. Even stuff like NBA Jam don't do shit for that audience. Yeah they might own it, but it's a side game you spend a few hours on at most. Would never replace the sim-like basketball game.

It's simply the style of game that Nintendo makes is dying on AAA form, essentially relegating me to indies in the future.

It's the same with every genre. People want Zelda to Skyrim-ify. Racers need to be more like Gran Turismo, less like F-Zero / Mario Kart. RPGs more like Witcher 3 less like Xenoblade. Character action games that are serious in tone such as God of War, compared to the light hearted, parody, 4th wall breaking Kid Icrarus (funny note, both games are based on greek mythology)

You think the CoD audience cares about Splatoon ?

Same here, they just don't appeal to me at all.

if you can get out of your comfort zone and try any of these games on this list, you'll find out that the gameplay scratches that itch you conditioned yourself to ignore.

Nintendo's style of gaming makes you feel like your pre console wars video gaming loving self

A lot of assumptions going on in this post. A LOT.

And lol at the "pre-console wars." Lest we forget Nintendo's central role in console wars of years past.

It was the best console to own in 2013, too.

It might be the best consile to own in 2015, too. Nintendo's got some heavy hitters next year, but if P5 actually is localized and released then, it'll be a toss up for me personally.

I wish more people would pick one up. The WiiU doesn't deserve the shit that it gets.

So much love for Nintendo, lately.. maybe a little too much?
These kind of topics in particular don't make sense to me. Sure, it's the best now for many reasons we all know.. so what? A console last years, this marks the end of the story to me, really.
PlayStation consoles for example always had a slow start, nothing new. Also the fact that Nintendo is used to suddenly drop the support to a console when the new one is coming is not new. Microsoft will have better days as well.
So, again, I don't see the point. "Good job Nintendo, you won 2014", maybe this?

Yeah I'd say so. I own a pc, ps4, Wii u, and a 3ds. The Wii U is definitely the console who's exclusives I've enjoyed more than the other consoles.

I'm pretty set with a Wii U, 3DS, and Vita.

I'll get a PS4 when MGS5 hits.

I still have a decent 360 and PS3 backlog too.

Don't know about confirmed, just said 2015. It could get delayed again though. It was suppose to be this year sometime.
Well its a Takahashi game and marks a return for his "Space Opera" kind of game, so I really wouldnt be surprised by another delay, knowing Nintendo fully supports his creations and gives him all the time he needs.
But its sure to be my GOTF together with bayo 2 and Zelda U, so he can delay as long as he feels like ^^

I agree but not many would.

Just to play the other side, if one has a good PC and want multiplayer games like BF and CoD, or racing games, than no.

For me, I'd rather have and play...

Super Mario 3D World
Hyrule Warriors
Smash Bros U
Bayonetta 2
DKC Tropical Freeze
Pikmin 3
Captain Toad

...than any other exclusive on the other consoles.

But that's just me.

It's the perfect second console.

Truth. I don't feel like the Wii U has many good games with large amounts of content yet that a more devoted gamer will spend a lot of time with. However, there are a bunch of Wii U games out at the time a lot of people, I included, enjoy.
