OPINION: Wii U, best console to own in 2014, easily

At this point, the must own games for current gen consoles such as the PS4/Xbone come out at the same rate as ones on the Wii-U.

But the amount of good/great games come out much more steadily for the PS4/Boner.

Basically, Bloodborne and Scalebound are the only XB1/PS4 exclusives I give a fuck about, the rest mean nothing to me as I have a competent gaming pc and even then fuck paying for online and what I've heard of PSN especially fuck that (if your going to dupe me into paying for something that's free it better damn well be at least competent).

It's waiting game to see which of the two I end up caring more about.

Are those really the only 2 games you're interested in? Nothing else?

yep thats the big thing for me i'm usually not into military FPS, sports games, and western RPG but even leaving those genre's out you would still miss out on a lot of games if you had a wii u as your only console.
I have a crazy backlog just with a wii u and 3ds, I can't imagine with other consoles xD I really haven't felt a drought with those two systems, I always have something to play. And a couple of days for bayo 1 and 2, then smash, then captain toad and I STILL have to finish hyrule warriors, and I'm constantly playing smash 3ds, oh and omega ruby comes out the SAME day as smash wii u it's crazy haha :p. Plus with work, school and my girl, there's only so much time I can spend playing too

Almost all those games come out on last gen and pc though, so not only can you play those games on old consoles you can generally play them better on pc because last gen is holding them back. Your stuck in the state of limbo, it's not the cheapest way to play those games nor generally technically the best. Which is basically my problem with almost all multiplats this year.

Next gen truly only has a worth to me when the games are actually next gen exclusive otherwise it's neither here or there.

My 10 favourite games of all time:

1. Super Mario 3D World (Wii U)
2. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS)
3. Pokemon X/Y (3DS)
4. Halo 3 (360)
5. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (PS)
6. Fable 2 (360)
7. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
8. Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS)
9. Pokemon Emerald (GBA)
10. Chrono Trigger (SNES)

So yeah, it is probably my favourite home console of this gen so far!

I don't think that's necessarily true though I know what your saying. The N64 melted my brain with some of the most state of the art genre defining games of all time. You got a smaller catalog compared to the PS1 but you had games in just that first year that were some of the greatest ever. Wii U hasn't touched any of that greatness. I would say if you were happy with Nintendo's output on the Wii you will be more than content here. If however, you thought the Wii U was a return to a Nintendo that was at the forefront of this industry you won't find any of that bravery here

They're still at the forefront, but in a specific and niche trajectory of evolution. I consider Wii Sports to be a revelation similarly to how it felt playing OoT and SM64 in the 90s. Wii U so far is more about perfection than innovation, but then you see stuff like Splatoon and can't help to get excited for its brilliant and fresh concept. Nintendo Land is already one of the most impactful local multiplayer experiences ever, thanks to asymmetry and flawless execution. Mario Chase got me rolling on the floor laughing literally. But I'm not even going to try convincing people. Those who try NL say they had a blast playing and were reminded of the N64 multiplayer days, but would never consider to actually purchase it. If you refuse pure, boiled down fun then idk what to say.

Well, it did have a year head start. If it didn't have the best (and most) exclusives at this point that would be a real big problem.

Are those really the only 2 games you're interested in? Nothing else?

Yes those two, UC4 seems nice and all but I can live without (actually most Sony current output of graphics first everything else later is utter unappealing to me). Sunset also seems nice, but it's not spend money on a system to get as are most of the other exclusives hell even if I had the system I'm not sure I would get those games.

It's no coincidence that the games I'm interested in are likely mechanically driven games from renowned developers..

Polished? I agree but best is completely debatable.
Mario was the only one I thought was truly great. The rest are just recycled Nintendo.

Have franchies on other consoles been any different? One of the things that frustrated me the most about last gen was that a lot of games offered the same gameplay, but with a fresh coat of paint. So far this gen seems to be no exception.

At E3 I would like to think that Nintendo proved they'll support it anyway. The games on display are top tier Nintendo quality titles, not some b-team efforts like PSV's 1st party library consists of. Just look at how disproportionate their Wii U lineup is compared to the more successful system 3DS. Instead of milking the 3DS userbase or putting resources into a new system launch, they insist on supporting the Wii U with everything they got, which has already been declared dead in terms of future outlook of sales by many.

I am not worried about First Party support for the entirity of the Wii U's shelf life, but one had to wonder what type of third party games, multiplat and catered to the console's specifics could have existed had the Wii U been a success.

By the end of November both the Ps4 and Xbox One will have a better library or at least more variety than the WiiU. Actually they both already have more variety. So no, the WiiU is not the console to own in 2014.

Is a good console non-the less, and I'm just happy Nintendo fans are enjoying the library. That's the only thing that matters at the end.

Edit: After reading the OP again it just reads like poor fanboyism. This line right here is just pure gold: "If I didn't have a PS4 this year yet, I'll be missing out on Destiny (for example), but then again I really wouldn't be missing out on anything" . Because what the hell, lets ignore the other great games the ps4 has. To make things worth just during the last 4 months the ps4 got: The Last of Us: Remastered, Alien: Isolation, Shadow of Mordor, PvZ: Garden Warfare, Driveclub and that's not even counting gems in the psn store like Oddworld 'n' Tasty or Velocity 2X. Oh and lets not forget Destiny, which was the biggest launch for a new IP. Lets overlook that, because apparently PS4 will only have games until next year.

Edit 2: And compared to Xbox One, which I don't own, the bloodbath is even worth, because it currently has a better library than the Ps4.

Opinions and all that, but I just don't agree.

The output might be familiar, but calling games like Pikmin 3, DKC Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8 and others recycling is a disservice to those games. The only title available from Nintendo that could even qualify as a recycled venture would be Wind Waker HD and even if it's a remaster it puts a lot of new release to shame. Seriously. As someone who played the original Pikmin it really is easy to see how 3 is different from the original for example.

It's a really fantastic console, and I think they've done a really good job of showing they will fully support a console that is selling much lower than expected. I'll have no worries buying the next Nintendo hardware at launch because I know they'll keep making great games for it.

It's a lot harder for me to buy in early for something like another Sony handheld given how much they neglect the Vita.

I don't see the variety

On the other hand, I see the wii u with different exclusives, all great games and very varied

Very true.

2015 will be the year where I question if I want to stop playing 100+ titles I own for my 360 and buy a new console to play exclusive games.

The WiiU's library is appealing to me and it will get Xenoblade X and Zelda next year so it will definitely be my first 8th gen platform and then the PS4 after it gets Final Fantasy XV and Tales of Zestiria R

What do you think of Wii's sucess then, did its 3rd party lineup satisfy you outside of some quirky titles?

Wii was successful for its audience expansion type of games. So 3rd parties released equivalent games to Wii __ stuff but often with worse quality.

Let's say the EA partnership was successful and the other Wii U multiplat launch games passed the test, sure it'd have better 3rd party support but it's still the same western AAA stuff I don't want on PS4.

I want SNES/PS2 era of Japanese 3rd party, which is exactly what Xenoblade and Bayonetta provide. There's no market for them anymore.

Can't say I agree here. The Wii U has some very solid titles but they are going to miss out on alot of good games coming out this year ( AC; NBA2k15; DA;etc.). The lack of third party games is not enough to make the wii u a viable main console; specially if you are a single console only type gamer.

I don't see the variety

It's definitely there. Some people with PCs can't fathom playing a multiplat on console but for those who aren't so particular there is a ton of variety.

I personally own on PS4: Transistor, Destiny, Strider, Driveclub, Shadow of Mordor, TLOU Remastered, inFamous SS, inFamous FL, Strider, Dead Nation, Flower, Sound Shapes, Outlast, Flow, Stealth Inc, Wolfenstein 3D, AC4, Child of Light, Resogun, Pix the Cat, Dust, Spelunky, Velocity 2X, PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate, Trine 2, Injustice, Rayman Legends, Fez. Tomb Raider, MGS Ground Zeroes, Tower fall Ascension, NFS Rivals.

Say what you want about most of those being available on PC, PS3 or XB1(turns out most people don't care) but there is absolutely variety.

I only own a WiiU, my PC would struggle to play football manager let alone anything that requires a level of graphics and the only thing I feel Im missing out on is Shadow of Mordor, GTAV, TLOU and Sunset Overdrive.

Honestly havent seen anything else compelling enough for me to justify the purchase yet, although MGSV and Uncharted make me want a PS4, so will likely pick up the inevitable Uncharted bundle and if MS ever do anything meaningful with the Rare IPs ill get an X1.

As it stands there is more than enough to keep me delighted with my WiiU purchase.

You don't see the variety because you choose not to. There are tons of games for every platform under the sun in a wide variety of genres. Locking yourself into one ecosystem makes no sense to me, but hey whatever makes you happy

I agree the variety is there on other platforms, it just seems to me that the quality is lacking. I see games like Driveclub, Infamous, Killzone, Destiny and think that Id be disappointed to own a PS4/X1 at this point. Different strokes for different folks though I guess.

Nintendo fans wanna act like there games are the holy grail, but it's really down to personal preference. just by looking at the sales for the wiiu, nintendo fans aren't even buying nintendo games the way they should be. Mario 3d world should be selling much better to a user base that doesn't buy third party games, DK bombed, pikmin had weak sales, MK8 is the only game that really sold great. it seems to me even nintendo fans don't think the games are that great based on the huge decline in sales.

3DS > Wii U in terms of output and quality for this year. 3DS still has some interesting titles coming after Smash. Wii U can't really say that.

I agree OP, so does Miley Cyrus

Are those coming out this year?

They may not be, but you also said "after Smash" and then proceed to say that at least 3ds has interesting games after Smash and WiiU doesn't. "After Smash" hasn't happened yet for WiiU and their lineup for "after Smash" is pretty spectacular compared to the lineup for 3ds "after Smash"(aka we know very little about what is even coming to 3ds other than Pokémon from now till the end of 2015, where as we know quite a bit about WiiU).

This is where I stand too pretty much. I have a gaming PC, so I'm not missing out on multiplats and those games are the only PS4/Xbox One exclusives to have piqued my interest.

PC + Wii U is a hell of a combo.

What do you think of Wii's sucess then, did its 3rd party lineup satisfy you outside of some quirky titles?

Yeah, lots if neat exclusives that I doubt would have existed otherwise. On top of my head: Both No More Heroes, TvsC, Madworld, Red Steel 2, Zak and Wiki, The Conduit (suprisingly fun in MP, very glitchy though), Muramasa The Demon Blade.

It even had two SNK game collections.

It.even had

It's a great console, but by itself just not enough.

The only RPG coming out is X. All other companies that focus their strength on RPG's are going PS4 and XBone. If you don't care for RPG's, then Wii U is enough.

Sports games. I forget if any is coming on out on Wii U given how EA isn't exactly happy with them. If you don't care for sports game outside the weird oddities like Mario Golf, then Wii U is enough.

Racing/Sim type games like GT. Same deal.

Fighting games outside Smash. Same deal.

Big name games like MGS (or anything Konami) or GTA (or anything Rockstar). Same deal.

FPS. Same deal.

Minecraft. Same deal.

I'm beating a dead horse here - it's a great console, but by no means does it have enough variety to entice a lot of people to own it.

Man...so many weird comments in this thread.

I consider a lot of the games mentioned in the OP unappealing. MK8 is the only Wii I game I'll buy this year.

It's all about what you're into man. I like online shooters and mature racing games.

Played many great games this year, not once did I think that I was missing anything substantial on nintendo consoles.

lol...Yea the comments are getting weird. I guess its weird if you dont agree....I dont agree that the Wii U exclusives destroys the others or its not up for debate or its no contest. Because of gaming tastes, preferences.

I got a Wii U at launch....and have yet to get 3D World.... And I barely feel like I'm missing out. I got TLoU day one and its one of the few games I played almost non stop. Prototype 1 and 2 were ones, Darksiders 1 and 2, GTA 5/GTA: Online...NBA 2K14....

Its very much up for debate and it is a contest when ppl have posted genres, games that wont/might not make it to the Wii U. GTA 5, Madden, NBA 2K ....each one of those alone...... = no buy for many. Together? Almost unfair.

What if I want to play sports games? Or big AAA games like Call of Duty, Destiny, Assasins Creed Unity, Battlefield or any other 3rd party game? Here is a list of games I cannot get on the Wii-U this year
  • Destiny
  • NHL 15
  • FIFA 15
  • Madden 15
  • Diablo 3
  • Minecraft
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
  • NBA 2k15
  • Assasin's Creed Unity
  • Call of Duty Advanced Warfare
  • Titanfall
  • GTA V Remaster
  • Evolve
  • Wolfenstein
  • Shadow of Mordor
  • Evil Within
  • Alien Isolation
  • The Crew
  • Far Cry 4
  • Witcher 3
  • Dragon Age
  • Lords of the Fallen
  • Metro Redux
  • Tomb Raider
  • Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare
  • WWE 2k15

Compare that list to the OP....and just about everything on this list has my very interested....only a handful in the OP do. Add these (some are PS4 exclusive) Infamous Second Son, Killzone, Battlefield 4, Dying Light, DayZ, Dead Island 2, Dead Nation, Drive Club, Dont Starve, Escape Plan, Forza Horizon, Hotline Miami, LBP 3, Madden 25, MLB 14, NfS Rivals, Outlast, PES 15, Silent Hills demo....yes a demo, TLoU Remaster, Sleeping Dogs DE, (all must haves for those that didnt play the origs along w/Tomb Raider he already posted), Strider 2014 version, Thief, Trials Fusion, TWD Seasons 1 and 2, The Wolf Among Us, DC Universe Online.

Its very much up for debate about it being the best console to get or even having the best library....

The only console that isn't really affected by what other pieces of gaming hardware you have is the Wii U and the 3DS. Both have some really good games that are available nowhere else.

The Wii U in it's own void however means having a small library where everyone has the same games

This is what I meant when I said it might be the easier choice of the 3.

love my wii u, the only thing really hold it back for me is the relatively terrible deals on their eshop compared to what im used to, ie steam and psn deals

Man I did not read the other 18 pages but am I the only one rocking a ps4, wii u, vita and 3ds?

Don't know about this year, but the Wii U's library definitely has more to offer than both the PS4 and Xbox One

Nintendo fans wanna act like there games are the holy grail, but it's really down to personal preference. just by looking at the sales for the wiiu, nintendo fans aren't even buying nintendo games the way they should be. 3D World has about a 40% attach rate, which is great! It's launch wasn't too good, but it has had steady legs ever since.

I agree..on the first hand one part of me is telling me that when you buy a console you also need to think 'long term'
On the second hand another part of me is telling the other to just shut the fuck up and go buy a wii U already that bayo 2 is almost out

I'm in agreement with the OP. I waited until August 2013 to get the WiiU then soon got W101, a bit later SMW3D for xmas. It was a great 2nd gaming machine but since this summer its suddenly been getting lots of use; mostly MK8, Shovel Knight, Hyrule Warriors (also I just played the Bayo2 demo and am now wishing it was the 24th already).

I am a PC gamer by default and sometimes it can get a bit tedious but thankfully my living room setup is geared towards immersion so when I feel the need, I just sit back and soak in the glory, controller (GamePad) in hand; brawlers, platforms, racing, I'm set. I'm still looking for a reason to buy one of the other consoles, I see nothing compelling for me there, at least not yet, and somewhat likely not ever.

Even my 3DS is sitting out unused, WiiU has my vote for 2014 and there's more to come next year!

It's a fact. And WiiU and PC is the best combo you could have all year.
Seriously, the only (non handheld) games i played this year that weren't on PC or WiiU, are MGSV:GZ and P.T.

Are those coming out this year?
Sorry misread your post. Lets be honest though considering how late Smash is releasing in the year you havent given it much of a chance, even then you still have captain toad which is from EAD who dont make bad games. What has 3ds got besides Pokemon?

haven't see the word "idort" in a while.

Anyway I would be rocking that combo if my Wii U didn't shit out on me.

But mostly, I just roll with my PS3/Vitas. 3DS is relegated to a TRFFCC machine until ORAS comes.

As for the PS4, it makes a great console stand

I like the WiiU, but I have to admit to feeling a little bit tired of Nintendo games. I mean, their games are undoubtedly super polished, but I feel like a lot of that polish seems to come at the cost of scope and ambition. They have these formulas down to such an level that it almost seems like there's nothing more to be drawn out of them at this point, there is a sense that you're constantly retreading the same ground. The 2d and 3d marios feel closer to each other in structure and style than ever before, their games are colourful and saccharine sweet to the point where it almost feels relentless, and they don't have any developers like Rare anymore who can offer a bit of contrast.

I don't know, I think if you love Nintendo games you'll love WiiU, but they seem to cater to such a limited audience these days, so either you'll find a lot to like or basically nothing.
