OPINION: Wii U, best console to own in 2014, easily

It does seem very likely to me. Then again if the system has gathered a worthwhile library before it is killed then why should it be a problem?

Honestly I feel they'll keep the console around until at least 2016. The ghost of Sega's mistakes will keep them from pulling the plug too soon.

However it seems that they are going to evolve Wii U's architecture into future hardware a la iOS so perhaps we'll see more gradual transition devices instead of hard generational consoles out of Nintendo.

Well Pro Controller is amazing no matter how you feel about GamePad. Have you tried it? I even chose to use it for my PC games over 360 controller. You can play most of the games in the OP with it too.
Actually, you're right. I love the pro controller. It's right up there with the ds4 and the 360 pad

If I take what OP wrote and what I personally think. In my opinion, the Wii U is the best console to purchase at this very point in time. It has a bunch of good games and a decent stream of upcoming games the coming months into the next year.

Comparing to the other two consoles, which -at this very point in time- have less of a defined exclusive line-up. There's no question that these other consoles are a better investment since you know that especially the PS4 is selling so well that you can expect great things to come regardless of them being announced at this point or not. Compare that to the Wii U, which might as well be peaking at this very moment. However that fact makes the Wii U a solid purchase in this year, just like OP said. Whether you like the line-up or not doesn't necessarily matter, that's an opinion. OP is just making a point taking in account what I just wrote.

Yes, I use it when I can. I am annoyed by games that fore the Gamepad on me unnecessarily, though, like SM3DW sometimes does.

Man, what's with your vitriol for Nintendo fans? You're treating it like you're fighting for your country. Who cares what other people enjoy or play? Just chill out. We all love video games.
i hope

I'm tired of some of them acting like they have the most refined tastes in gaming when holding up games I really don't care about as the paragon of quality. Such fans are so snotty and assholish about it - and, in my view, wrong.

Lol grimdark etc.

Many non-Nintendo games are awesome, in some cases far more interesting than anything Nintendo puts out. But some hardcore N fans act like those games don't have actual fun gameplay and fun worlds to explore. Total horseshit, of course.

Yep. I'm a fan of Nintendo. Grew up on Nintendo. Favorite game of all time is a Nintendo game. I've owned every console and handheld they've put out. And yet I find the general fan base to be the most defensive of any out there.

Don't think this is true at all. I think 'Nintendo fans' get annoyed by the double standards held on community forums like this. It may be a vocal minority but it's very vocal. The double standard I'm talking about are the kind of people who don't like Nintendo games because they just release the same games over and over (Mario Kart on every system), but I've noticed a lot of these people are avid Call of Duty or sports gamers. I mean play what you want, but don't go around saying Nintendo games are the same stuff when you play those kind of games. I know quite a few people like this, and it's quite annoying. This could come across as hating other games, but it's not necessarily true.

It's in this very thread, so it's absolutely a fact that this attitude is present in some Nintendo fans.

Every fandom has annoying fans. However, those are the fans that stand out the most. Nintendo fans are obnoxious like you mentioned, but you gotta realize that it's a vocal minority that is so one-sided about Nintendo having the only good games. I think you're making a bad generalization and judging an entire fanbase on that obnoxious minority with their blind fanboyism.

From that list... well yeah just the one. It doesn't even really come out until January either.

Unless of course they were coming to Nintendo's U. Then that's when a game suddenly matters.

Nobody's actually saying this except for you. It's a little weird honestly. January was a reference to the Steam release.

edit: Unless you're legit hype for WWE and Monopoly in which case, enjoy.

Obviously he'd just be eating the hype, couldn't genuinely enjoy said games.

When you remove last generation games, that are just getting a release on current gen as well, then quite a few of those disappear.

It's shocking to me how much Nintendo missed a huge opportunity by not having a console with specs on par this time: in this generation only the exclusives matter now (as every other game is on every possible platform as long as the specs are here). If Nintendo had third parties, they would wipe everyone out. Their exclusives are so fucking better than everyone else.

Even right now, a Nintendo console and a PC is pretty much all you need (I make do with a 3ds fine for now, until a price drop). Too bad bloodborne is forcing me to get a ps4 soon.

I really want to buy a wiiu and even today I have been flip flopping on whether to do it or not. At a few points I've already decided to grab one after work today; However the one thing this thread made me think about was if Nintendo kills it in the next two years.

I know the console is doing really, really bad, but I still don't want to drop $299+tax on a dead console. I'm not buying a referb ever btw.

Ahhhhhh why is this soooooo hard?

It isn't. I promise you the purchase anxiety will be long gone after half an hour of playing that game you really wanted. If a console has games you want, and you have the money, buy it. Life really is too short to brood over what may or may not be, much less deny yourself something you actually want.

A Nintendo console with price/specs on par with MS/Sony wouldn't make much difference I don't think. I think the big problem is that Nintendo's first party offerings don't resonate as much with the "core gamer" crowd as people like to admit.

It wouldn't help a company so goddamn shortsighted they spend over a half-decade without preparing for the development and financial requirements for making software for their own next-gen console let alone one at the PS4/Xbone level.

Right? They're still on those systems and make up their library. How does the game lessen because it's on another platform?

I don't think they would have.

Let's imagine the Wii U's power was between PS4 + Bone.
What would have happened?

"Shall I get that Nintendo console or a PS4?"
"Get a PS4, Nintendo is for kids"
or
"Get a PS4, it's a bit better than the Nintendo console"
or
"Get a PS4, we can't afford both because both are really expensive"

"So our new 'mature' game that we are creating. For what platforms should we create it?"
"PS4 + Bone of course, Nintendo is for kids and 'mature' games don't sell on it. The audience is just children, no teenager and no adult buys it"

Which means it would have resulted in a way too expensive Nintendo console, that wouldn't have sold well - maybe even worse, because it would have been way too expensive on top of having the Nintendo name on it. Also see: Nintendo Gamecube.

We already saw what happened on Wii. The best selling console of a generation. Which was skipped by most larger publishers. There are quite a few hidden gems, but even the obvious simple ports never happened (for example PS2 GTA collection).

And I'm pretty sure all of that would even happen, in case Nintendo created the console with the most power out there.

Too bad bloodborne is forcing me to get a ps4 soon.

I'm happy that Dark Souls 2 has ruined the series that much, that I have no desire for that game at all.

Right? They're still on those systems and make up their library. How does the game lessen because it's on another platform?

When I already own a PS3, why should I buy a new console? I can already play those games on my last gen machine. Wait, in case I was actually interested, I would have already played some of them a year ago.

Well, that's you, there are many that don't own either PS3 or 360, or have sold them.

Honestly based off my own taste in games i think the Wii U will be my console of the year next year. Its weird i know since the PS4 will have like a couple hundred games more by the end of next year but if you like the games that are coming out more on the Wii U you could have a thousand more on other gaming machines and still be unsatisfied with them. Its all a matter of what you like in the end.

Its always amusing when the "buts" come in. Like let's try and lessen the library of one system because it's also available on another system. Sorry bud, but they're all the latest releases, they just aren't coming to Nintendo's system. If you wish to play the most inferior port then enjoy them on your PS3. Last gen systems aren't exactly the focus anymore.

Well, that's you, there are many that don't own either PS3 or 360, or have sold them.

Like I already said - in case anyone was interested in for example GTA 5, those people would have already played it a year ago. One could even buy a PS3 and GTA 5 now and have a large library available immediately. For way less money.

And in case PS4 + Bone had any backward compatibility whatsoever, plenty of ports wouldn't even be necessary at all. For example that Lego Batman game.

Well Pro Controller is amazing no matter how you feel about GamePad. Have you tried it? I even chose to use it for my PC games over 360 controller. You can play most of the games in the OP with it too.

I have one but I hate that the sticks are up top and the triggers are garbage. DS4 and XB1 controller both have it beat imo.

Really? I refused to buy GTA5 even though I had a PS3 because I knew the experience would be less than optimal so I have waited until it's release for the PC. So your assumptions are baseless.

You're missing the point. PS4 and XB1's libraries are getting substantially bigger than WiiU's, and have more "hits" than WiiU in 2014. It doesn't matter if you think people don't want those games because they're on PS360 or they're ports. Their sales show otherwise and that is all that really matters, this holiday I (along with most other XB1/PS4 owners) will have a far larger choice of games than WiiU.

I'm happy that Dark Souls 2 has ruined the series that much, that I have no desire for that game at all.

Unrelated, but just FYI, the Bloodborne team (AKA Demon's Souls/Dark Souls team) hardly touched Dark Souls II. Miyazaki himself had almost nothing to do with it.

Just saying. Dark Souls II is one of those things where I say "It's decent. I hate it." Bloodborne's got nothing to do with it and explains a lot of why that game was what it was.

Did I say that the PC release is useless? This thread is pretty obviously about consoles and not PCs.

Noone knew that a PS4+Bone cashgrab was coming. Which means console gamers, that were interested, already bought last generation console versions. Which also means they have already played the game.

Yeah, but I don't give a shit about the details. FROM released that piece of crap. I even bought the Japanese LE. I was not impressed. At all. And the franchise is done for me.

No, many people assumed that Rockstar would capitalize on the new consoles and rerelease GTA5 on them. Guess what, they were right. You're making assumptions here. Sorry.

I guess it's a good thing Bloodborne is a new franchise!

Who is "many people" especially compared to the total sales count of GTA 5 on last generation consoles?

Your "many people" is a tiny few on GAF and that's basically it.

I guess it's a good thing Bloodborne is a new franchise!

When it talks like a duck and walks like a duck, chances are that it's a duck. It's a souls game with a few additional gimmicks and a new name.

Continue making assumptions, it's working out so well for you.

So you want to tell me that millions of people didn't buy the game on last generation consoles and all of those millions are just waiting for the current generation releases? You personally don't even count, because you are waiting for the PC release. Not for the PS4+Bone release.

I'm pretty sure that it will sell millions. But not because of those imaginary people, but because plenty of people will double-dip.

And er, we'll let the sales speak for themselves. Isn't TLOU:R at about 20% of the originals sales? (remember a news peice about it hitting 1m and original doing 5m~).

If that is the case, GTAV would do 6m+ across PS4XB1. But it's likely it'll do a lot, lot more than that. Which shows plenty of people will have waited (and the other half double dip)

Or people who knew there was a chance a better version coming to new consoles thanks to many rumors last year

Or people who actually legit didn't get a chance to play the game even when they were interested due any one of many possible reasonable reasons (for example, I didn't play it because of both of these reasons.)

Obviously there will be those who double dip and there's nothing wrong with that. It's a fantastic game from what I hear. The issue here is all the points I'm and few others here are making are just obvious and reasonable possibilities. You have no grounds to make any definitive statements such as it will sell the most because of people who double dip

You're pretty much arguing that nearly NOBODY waited for GTA5 on future consoles which is false. It doesn't have to be a tiny few or millions, it's possible and very likely that it's somewhere in between but your extremes require you to argue otherwise.

I don't know. I think it has a little more to do with the current PS4 composition has relatively a huge portion of 360-only owners.

Waiting for a PC release? Okay, makes sense. It was obvious that they would release one at some point. But waiting for an imaginary PS4+Bone release although Rockstar kept quiet for quite some time? Yeah, sure.

Where did I say millions? You said

You said "many people".

Let's take a look at GTA 5 sales. Back in february they had already sold around 32 MILLION copies. For Rockstar a few thousand or even a few hundred thousand people are not many. Those would be a tiny few. Even one million wouldn't be much compared to the sales that the game already had.

For a niche game a few hundred people would be many. For a game like GTA 5 they are not.
