The idea is that your brain decides for you without the lines and, once you know it, you can will it to spin either way even though the image doesn't change.

You wouldn't fall for a lot of it in "real life". The lack of depth is what enables this to work. You can see some of the grid illusions if someone's wearing a checkered shirt or if you're eating somewhere with a checkered table cloth, but that's still relying on what's basically a 2D surface.

Actually, I think the shadow gives away the direction it is "really" spinning. It doesn't make sense with the leftmost image.
