Ori and the Blind Forest DE changes loyalty discount: now a 90-day valid coupon

Just saw this pop-up in my feed and then checked their Steam page:

Hey everybody, we wanted to give an update that we are switching over to a different method for administering the loyalty discount to owners of the original Ori and the Blind Forest. As of today all existing owners should have a Steam Coupon that allows owners of the original game to purchase the Definitive Edition for $5. Please be sure to use it before it expires in 90 days!
Also as a result of this change we’ll be able to participate in other discounts and turn gifting back on as many of our fans have requested.

In short, apparently you should have gotten (I still haven't) a 75% coupon if you owned the original. With that coupon you can get it for $5, but the catch is it's only valid for 90 days.

Thought I'd give you a heads up.

It's a cheap price so I am not going to complain about an expiration date. I had always planned on getting it, but now I will get it a little sooner.

Does this apply to folks who purchased the XB1 version as well?

I imagine it is defaulted on Xb1. The issue with the Steam version is that the default disallowed gifting and also disallowed participating in sales without screwing things up. Don't think that was an issue on Xbox (particularly the gifting thing because, no gifting) so no changes.

Got my coupon and bought the DE right away, because otherwise I'd forget it, and I don't intend to replay the game right away.

I'm sure this was for the greater good, but it's a bit unfortunate that you're now limited in time.

This is now the coupon begging thread for people like me who don't have either version, and are cheap, to ask for an unwanted coupon, right?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Coupon get. Thanks TatorTots for sending through a coupon!

I bought it at 5$ when Ori DE came out (I had the original game on XBO) but I don't know if the discount still applies today.

Try and search for Ori DE in the store, you should see it at 5$.

I can chime in on this :)

We initially wanted to keep the 75% discount for people who bought the original game (Ori and the Blind Forest) in perpetuity, but the problem is that we then couldn't participate in sales (that's the reason why Ori hasn't been in recent sales) and that's also the reason why gifting didn't work anymore.

We received hundreds of inquiries over the past couple of months from folks who wanted to gift the game and were angry that it wasn't possible - so we looked into solutions that wouldn't screw anybody over. The Coupon idea was actually suggested by people on the Steam Forums and it seemed like the most sensible thing to do. Yes, it comes with the caveat that the coupons are available only for a limited time, but we thought that'd be okay since the game already came out in March and we knew we'd get a ton of flack if Ori wouldn't be in any of the upcoming sales either.

Hope that all makes sense and you guys understand why we decided to move ahead on this. Our intention wasn't to force people into upgrading, we just wanted to ensure that gifting works and that we can participate in future sales again.

Didn't know that this is giftable?

I will also be happy to buy OATBF for 5e. So if someone have this coupon and doesn't need it, i will take it. Thanks

Everyone buy this damn game its amazing

I was going to get it eventually - not sure why I put it off - but I just nabbed a copy with the coupon. Interested to see what's been added, as the original game was great already.

Small tip: If you're not seeing the coupon in your inventory, restart Steam.

Also, all owners of the original Ori release receive the coupon -- even those who also own the DE.

I own both versions and Steam still gave me a 75% off coupon the other day. I guess this was the reason. I can trade it if anyone wants it.

Amazing game.

Sorry, I never check my PMs here - Please send me your inquiry over mail, I'll forward it to someone who might be able to help :)

No harm, no foul! I actually did send an e-mail to the feedback address after a few days, haha. Would you mind PM'ing me an e-mail address I can use to contact you directly? I'm about to head off to bed, but I'll send it through later on.

If I have it on Xbox One will the discount apply to me on Steam or is it only Steam to Steam?

The latter.

Huh, didn't even know DE was coming.

I would gladly take a coupon if anyone has a spare. Ori has been on my steam wishlist for quite some time, I would definitely buy it at such price. Thanks!

Edit: Got it. If anyone is still looking for a coupon I suggest heading to Ori's subreddit.

I saw that I got this coupon yesterday but didn't think much of it. I'll have to see what changed in the "definitive edition" to see if it's worth spending $5 to rebuy a game I already have.

Haven't received the coupon as of yet. I'll try restarting Steam again in a few hours. Thanks for the heads up!

EDIT: Got it! :-)

I'm glad I have my limited edition physical copy. Wanted it over the price to upgrade my original digital xb1 purchase. Such a great game. This and Shovel Knight I was legitimately happy to purchase several times over.

vanilla Ori was my #2 GOTY 2015 after Witcher 3, but I don't like getting "pressured" into buying something, even if $5 is a steal for this amazing game.

I have a 75% off coupon for Steam, but it is can only be traded. There is no code, so the first person to pm me will have to add me on Steam for a trade.

EDIT: gone

Yeah I'm curious because I sold my Xbox 1 and was only halfway through the game. Thanks for all the answers everyone, I'll wait until it's on special or when I inevitably pick up a Scorpio.

The DE comes with some DLC (A new area and new ability) and some other changes like being able to go back when you finish the game. So it's basically a $5 DLC pack but you have to start over.

Just a heads up to anyone thinking it's just the same thing and was gonna give their code away

Was it intentional to give the coupon even to those who already own the Definitive Edition? Is it unethical to give the coupon away in that case? :)

DE has some extra stuff, I think an area but more importantly you can go back and get 100% on areas that were locked off. That's something I never got around to doing in another play through on Xbox. I was waiting for a sale to double dip on PC but if someone can hook up a coupon I'd love to play the new area and get 100% completion.

Great game, worth it at any price, a masterpiece. I know it's cliche but it's got great game play and design and some of the best and most memorable 2d levels I've played in a while. That waterfall are was so intense and so good!

How much content does the DE add exactly?

Apparently there are 2 new areas (Black Root Burrows and the Lost Grove), but I don't know how long it takes to play through them, can't seem to find that from player impressions.

What made me get the DE is that they added warping between spirit wells. That was strangely missing from the original version and makes me want to replay the game. Apparently you can also re-enter every dungeon now so it's easier to get 100% item completion if you feel like it.

There are also easy and hard difficulties now, and added checkpoints.
