Outcast to be revived by original authors

YES! Best news in years indeed, i was devastated when outcast 2 got canceled.

I still have the original game and box, and I still sometimes wear the t-shirt that came with the box.
While I still have the box, I think the T-Shirt did not survive the many times I moved during the last 14 years.

OH! MY! GOD!

That said, I got incredibly excited for Totems at the start of the last generation, but then the company went bankrupt and the project was canceled. Let's first see whether they have a more sound plan this time around.

No video of gameplay survived the Outcast 2 cancelation, eh? Too bad, I had been watching that game, particularly as a PS2 release with its ambitious engine.

I don't know what they'd be capable of at this point, but it'd sure be nice if the new Outcast did something weird with its engine that nobody else is doing, even if it's not "next-gen quality" I'd love to see Outcast revived with something distinctive powering it. That voxel engine on the first game has always fascinated me, I'd love to see the next game test new ground as well.

OpenOutcast sounds promising as well, but as much luck as I can wish those guys, it just doesn't wind me up yet with just a regular CE3 graphics system powering it...

I am actually smiling physically right now. Absolutely best news in years that I have ever read.
The water, the worlds, the languages, the music. I just listened to the soundtrack this last week.

For anybody who wants to replay the original, you can now play it in widescreen/high-res with this mod. Further fixes are at the end of the thread.

Hopefully this works out, Outcast was such a brilliant game, so ahead of it's time. Hell it's open world is still more interesting and reactive then modern takes on the genre.

Reboot it. Fuck voxels,
do a raytracer

The game was brilliant for its time. I hope they'll be able to bring it back.

outcast 2 was amazing on PS2

This is amazing news, I was so heartbroken that Outcast 2 was never released. I hope this works out, I'll contribute any amount to see a HD re imagining of the first and the release of the sequel.

+100

I played Outcast so many times, loved it to bits.

The game is on sale right now on GOG, is it any good? as in genuinely good, not in a "so bad its good" way.

The gameplay is dated, but the world they created (language, customs, aesthetics etc) is amazing, and the reactivity the world has to your actions is also amazing. It's full of so much detail that it's easy to get immersed in. One of the best games ever IMO.

Still have to replay it with my gog copy... but at the time it was really one of those rare games that made you really feel "part" of their world, even if it was janky as hell.

Great news about the revival. Only problem is that it will probably be another kickstarter for me to pledge, and then start waiting....

YES! Omg, I loved Outcast soooo much back in the day. One of the first truly open exploarable worlds.

Also, the german version (which I played), had the german voice actor of Bruce Willis. One of the best german voices. Incredible manly, so another great thing about it. That everything was voiced was another incredible cool thing back then.

If kickstarter, in for premium tier. Can't wait till enough "Monde" went by, till we get more news.

"Don't forward my story!"

You acquire "gamsaav" crystals to save your progress in game. Not kidding.

This sounds terrible.
If RustyNails means you have to collect Gaamsaav crystals in order to save the game then that is not true. You were given the Gamsaav crystal at the beginning of the game for the purpose of saving the game at any given time:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outcast_(video_game)
Outcast uses a unique way to save games, integrated with the game world. At the start of the game, the player receives an object called a "Gaamsaav". He is instructed that the Gaamsaav is able to "capture his essence", so that it may later be restored. To save a game, the player equips the Gaamsaav and "squeezes" it, making it glow and emit a sound. The sound can be heard by enemies and they will investigate, so that the player must take the situation into account before saving a game. After a few seconds, the game pauses and a menu overlay appears.
Coolest idea and execution ever.

OMG OMG BEST GAME OF VOXELS!

Still have the original in box and cd's intact..in my VEINS!

When this kickstarter is live i am going to back it very very high.

Such great memories of this game <3 Ulukai mofos!

Outcast was a pure classic at the time. And man, those graphics floored me back then.

Hopefully something good will come out of this.

Awesome news. I remember reading about this game in GameInformer many years ago and it got me so psyched for the game

Great news. Anybody interested in Outcast should pick it up for $3 in the next 2 days at GOG and use the high-res mods. Still holds up quite well.

Just couldn't get into Outcast back in the day. I tried but gave up early on. The super-blurry graphics were frustrating too.

Been watching a few youtube videos of Outcast since this news hit. Ahhhhhhh the memories, I forgot how much humour there was in the game. One video people should watch is the Out takes video (yep that is right Outcast was that awesome it had outtakes).

My personal favourite outtake is right at the end when Cutter comments on the lifelike artificial intelligence.

Don't know how I missed this news! Can't wait to return to Adelpha. I just hope this will materialize into something playable. Kickstarter would be my doom. But also I'm a bit wary that the game doesn't have enough of a following to achieve the level of funding that such an ambitious game needs. This is just me tempering my own expectations... I'm frantically jumping inside my head and screaming fuck yeah at full lungs.

Thinking about it overnight, Outcast is probably the main reason I haven't been able to enjoy open world games as much since (at least up until the mid of this generation, I haven't played anything since that -- maybe they've improved since). Disrupting supply trains, asking NPC's for directions and having them point to persons if in sight instead of only giving vague directions, seeing civilians dive into the mud for cover if firefights erupt; everything felt so fluid and natural. It was released 14 years ago. Amazing.
