OutRun 2006 PSP - Quick Impressions.

I just picked up OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast for the PSP here in Sweden, a whole week before the intended launch. The game is a little disappointing from a technological standpoint, 30 fps with some occasional framedrops. It also seems like the game is running in 16bit mode with some clear dithering of the colours, much like some of the earlier PSP games.

Technological issues aside. The game plays very nicely and it does feel like OutRun, which is a good thing. I also tried signing on to the online mode, but I couldn't find anyone to play with, I suppose that's what you get for buying the game early.

I'm gonna have to get back to this thread with more impressions once I've played a little more. And if there are more of you who have this game already, I'd love to play some online with you...

I'm definitely going to be buying this. PS2 or PSP version though?

.. and speaking of technological issues. I just had a car disappearing on me as I rammed it from behind, it was just gone. Whats up with that?

I lost interest when I heard about it being 30fps. Ridge Racers has spoiled me. It's the only UMD I have in fact.

Buy an Xbox. It's the only perfect port.

PSP: lowered geometry, 30 fps
PS2: weaker effects, slowdown galore

Fixed :D

S0L was confident that the PC version is by far the best of all they are developing and has the best texture resolution.
Yeah, texturing wouldn't need any compression from the Chihiro original on PC. It's likely won't be a noticable difference anyway though really, just like most Chihiro to Xbox ports.

Thanks for the early impressions! I'm a little bummed to hear about the technical performance though. Hopefully it's not all bad. I would like to pick this up if it's fun to play.

I had no idea there was online play on the PSP version! :D

Where'd you get this from? The other thread mention it has framerate drops. Alot of games have that but it doesn't mean there's slowdown galore.
Framedrops = slowdowns.

Actually, there's a difference. A game can drop frames without slowing down the gameplay. Framedrops are not as bad as slowdown, but still noticable.

a year and a half and still most racing games look worse than ridge racer and then run only at 30fps
Well, the best looking PSP racer right now is NFS:MW, and that runs at 30FPS (no drops). If Out Run has the visuals of that caliber I won't complain.

a matter of taste, I find RR is easily the best looking and Burnout the most impressive

Burnout is 30FPS too, though (and I too think it's the best racer on PSP even though I think they downgraded visuals more than they should have - (again see NFS:MW))

Gek, you should look at another Outrun 2 thread where the game's developer answered me that they couldn't use 333MHz mode, and they can't even put it as an easter egg, as Sony wouldn't allow that.

I was actually wondering about the forced 333Mhz trick.

I've been searching someone to play against in the online mode forever now.. and finally I found two other players, and I got kicked by the one that hosted the race. Thanks for that.

I think that happens in the arcade/console versions as well, though admittedly it's been a while since I've played it so I might be thinking about another racer.

Usually they blink, spin around and disappear after a few seconds. But this one just went *poof*

Hasn't happened since, though. Must've been a temporary fluke.

Only two players I've seen online so far, and they kicked me as soon as I reached the lobby.

Fqa as in Final Quality Assurance? Is this game still in testing or what?

EDIT: Really friendly people too..

Week early? Someone broke release date proper :)

Not sure who the Fqa guys are, but I'll be looking into that...

Aside from the complaints - are you enjoying it? PSP version plays like the arcade to me - but then, I do have some bias :)

Yes, I was quite surprised when i saw the game on the shelf already. There was just one copy too so I bought it.

And yes, I quite enjoy the game despite the issues mentioned before. I'm not usually one for driving games but OutRun have always had a special place in my heart. Now if only I could find someone to play against online, But I guess I have to wait until the game launches.

There's no way that's ever going to happen. Likewise for the PC version.

how would you compare it against RR?

Ridge Racer does both look better and play smoother on the PSP, but it also suffers from the same type of 16bit dithering that's in OutRun 2006. On the other hand, I'm not too fond of the on-the-rails type of drifting thats present in the RR games, while OutRun does have arcade style drifting too, it feels like you're more in control than in RR.

I've only just got the game so I can't really give a final verdict, but when all comes down.. OutRun is OutRun and aside from the technological issues, it does not disappoint. OutRun also have Splash Wave, Magical Sound Shower and Passing Breeze.. and what can compare with that? :)

Wrong, player.

PC is going to skin all of them alive.

*Driving Force Pro Support
*Exact same arcade size textures and details
*Smooth online play
*Widescreen and hi-res/hi-def
*PC allows you full control over your music, by running WinAmp in the background

Guys in all seriousness, I cannot tell you how glad I am to see so many of you coming to your senses and going with the PC version. Sure we have to wait a bit longer, but boy oh boy, is it EVER going to be worth it!!

I sincerely hope those of you who buy the PC version will not jus play it for a couple weeks and quit. I want to continue to race against you guys for months and month on end. Hopefully you will see it this way as well :)

Polari. I suggest you head on over to NTSCUK and read what S0L had to say about what they're doing to make the PC version more than arcade perfect!

He said you can run D00M 3 or Half-Life 2, you will be able to run OR2:C2C. I expect it to be greatest Sega videogame port OF ANY KIND.

I'm sure it'll be great, but I'm not going to buy a PC for it, that's all.

After seeing Ridge Racers, or for that matter motherfracking Tekken DR shots (which we damn well KNOW will be at 60fps), there's no reason why this shouldn't be 60fps on PSP :(

FTL :( :( :(

what if I offered to buy you a PC that will play it smoothly?

If OutRun had the same poly count as Ridge, then it would run at 60fps. But then it wouldn't look like the Arcade machine, or indeed, play the same - as it is running the same code for the handling and physics.

I appreciate the framerate is important to you all - but then would you rather have something that played and looked the same, or have a dumbed down version?

Yes - we thought the same too. Which is why it does look and play so close, but as a compromise play at 30fps.

We are massive, massive fans of OutRun, we have put a lot of time and effort to bring it to the PSP intact - until you've played it, you can't say that we've made it or not - play it first, and then make your mind up :P

So.. feel like playing against me online? :)

Having a game, seemingly, before everyone else kinda blows.. as I can't find anyone to play against. :P

I've been playing PSP version all weekend. Superb game. I preferred OutRun 2 over RR6 and I prefer this over Ridge Racers.
