Overlooked or not so mainstream PC games

RIP Sir Tech

MOUNT AND BLADE

So awesome.

Open up Steam, download the demo, which is the full game except it limits your character to level 7.

Give it an hour.

Now enjoy your new addiction.

P.S. Save files for your demo character will not be compatible with the version you download as the game (unless they updated the demo to match recently.) Once you have the CD key, though, you can just play the "demo" as the full game, if you feel the need to keep the demo character.

Mount & Blade was the most recent overlooked PC game I dived into. It's got its quirks, but if you can over look them, the game can be really satisfying.

You can't help but crack a smile when you take out an army of 30 with 10 soldiers.

There's a demo on Steam if you're interested, and it represents a good chunk of the game from what I remember.

Bloodshed by Errorfree.

No screens because I can't find any. Fun game though, kicking limbs around and all.

Friend was playing the shit out of this several months back, kept seeing it pop up in steam but never decided to look into it...
Totally picking it up. Didnt even know it was on there

Is Disciples II good or should I just get the JA Gold edition instead of the two pack?

Disciples II is good for sure, but speaking of that:

Age of Wonders

Age of Wonders II / Shadow Magic

Superior to both the HoMM and Disciples series and probably the best games in the genre.

SWAT 4 -Brilliant tactical first person game that is, for lack of a better explanation, a mix of police simulator and squad-based tactical shooter. The game features a great interface for planning and coordinating the actions of your team, and there's a lot of emergent tension as you plan your moves and then let them rip and then you sort through the civilians and the baddies, arresting what you can but not necessarily going in guns blazing-like any real cop, you have to follow the rules of engagement for lethal force.

The game is highly replayable since things spawn in different places, and there is a small but strong co-op community for the game for online play to this day. For people that bemoan the demise of Rainbow Six into consolized cotton candy shootin', SWAT 4 offers some of that strong team-based tactical game play with a great twist thanks to the fact you and your team are cops.
.
I'll second this, but warn ya that for some reason Nvidia drivers screw the game's performance, it stutters like hell no matter what your settings are, and it's pretty much the same for any other Unreal Engine 2 game. Haven't tried the most recent drivers though.

god this thread is awesome. I remember years ago when i didn't have my own PC, i would flip through the PC mags and look at all the games I wished I could play. keep em coming, i'm compiling a list of games I had forgotten about.

Disciples II is great and has the best artwork of all strategy games. It's worth playing through it just for that.

Although i think that Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is the better strategy game. Still, you can get Disciples II gold for 9.95 on www.gog.com and it works perfect under XP/Vista. Totally worth it for that price.

DO NOT BUY JAGGED ALLIANCE ON STEAM it's bugged and no fix incoming, get it from somewhere else.

Disciples II is a great TBS, totally worth the $10 from GOG for all four games. JA is also on GOG if you want to avoid the bugged steam version. Disciples 2 & AoW are both very stat heavy games, with not very gripping stories. Don't know about JA.

A N A C H R O N O X ....

this game was a real gem. Played through it twice. It has a really good sense of humor. I was in tears some times. Its a little bit glitchy here and there but overall the whole (kinda cyberpunk) world is a blast.

Jagged Alliance 2 (+ Wildfire) is a blast but ... i'm burned out on this game. I think i replayed it like 13 times.
Still i recommend it to everyone. And btw i am not a fan of round based games. But JA2 is a exception.

I wish they'd put Anachronox up on GOG or Steam or something. It's a game that I'm certain many people would enjoy but haven't got the means to play at the moment. It needs to be elevated to cult classic instead of obscure gem, which it appears to be now.

It needs to get a sequel.
Fixed.

It was written to have a sequel. I think if the Dreamcast port that was being developed had ever gotten a release, the following would be much stronger. Steam would definitely help it, although I'm not sure how it'd work. Does Eidos still hold the IP rights, and do they support the service?

If you really can't get it, at least watch the Machinima. PlanetAnachronox was one of my first forum encounters, and the game absolutely lived up to and surpassed the hype. Honest-to-goodness the best RPG I've ever played, and the best thing Ion Storm released (Deus Ex's voice acting be damned).

After the game was released, there was meant to be a Ion Storm developed patch, but since they were dissolved very shortly after released, only one guy worked on it. It came out and made traveling around the game much easier. He also released the Machinima, and the DVD which he released as a file on the internet.

Essentially what I'm asking is this, does anyone have a mirror link to the DVD files? They used to be up on Machinima.com, but have since been taken down. Anachronox's storyline is absolutely cinema-quality, and the characters are all memorable.

The GoG lads would really need to pour some computational skill into getting Anachronox not only modernized, but working reliably since last I heard the game was a blast to play but even tricky for a good many hobbyists to get working proper. I hope they can wrangle a realized version of the game though, as I'd surely buy it and finally try it.

Also on the Dwarf Fortress front, http://www.youtube.com/user/captnduck should also steer you wisely like Boatmurdered.

With the latest fan patches there is no trouble running it. This is my 3rd play through with fan patches and it runs smoothly with no crash downs and without the major buggs that infested it before.

Also, +1 for Giants: Citizen Kabuto. By GAF's beloved developers of Armed and Dangerous.

Oni too, I have no idea why everyone hated that game. Moving around and killing people was fun, even though the game was repetitive.

Maybe you can't tell from this picture, but Dwarf Fortress is possibly the greatest game ever made:

I had a friend tell me all about this, I still haven't checked it out though. But its on the list.

Good point. Highly recommended series. They're also being remade via Matrix Games (CC3 and 4 are out right now, with 2 and 5 in the works), with additional campaigns and improved AI. More importantly, these games will help finance CC6.

Agreed. It's a great game series. And now that you reminded me of Close Combat I would also like to mention Steel Panthers series which also brilliant.

Well...that's even more awesome then! Now I just want GoG to get it so I can have yet another excuse to support them with some cash!

Overlooked? Now you're being ridiculous.

Siberia was a great point 'n click that is for some reason overlooked in favor of The Longest Journey.

Its on gog.com for a mere $10 DRM and client free, you'd be much better served picking it up from there. Such a great service deserves the support of gamers.
