Overlord II

Allright guys! Way to little hype for Overlord II here on GAF, lets talk about the game of minion domination! Anyone else dig the demo?

Release 26th June 2009

Overlord II is the sequel to the hit warped fantasy action adventure that had players being delightfully despotic. In Overlord II, a new Overlord and a more powerful army of Minions take on an entire empire in a truly epic adventure, inspired by the rise of the Roman Empire. As the Glorious Empire conquers kingdoms and destroys any sign of magic it finds, it's time to go Minion Maximus and send in the horde.

The Minions return smarter, deadlier (and funnier) and are ready to fight in large scale battles that will see their wild pack mentality squaring up to the organised legions of the Glorious Empire. As ever, they'll do anything and everything the Overlord commands of them, especially now that they can run ravage and wreck buildings and scenery. They've also learned how to ride: In Overlord II Minions will be able to mount up and ride wolves and other magical creatures around the landscape and take them into battle, making our band of merry fighters faster and fiercer than ever before. Coming in 2009, Overlord II is now in development at Triumph Studios in Delft, the Netherlands, for the PLAYSTATION®3 system, Xbox 360 and Games For Windows.

I only played the demo of the original but it seemed kinda fun. I wasn't a huge fan of the camera though. Is the camera improved this time around? Mainly, is it pulled back a bit further? It felt like an RPG/RTS in 3rd person, so sorta like Warcraft 3 zoomed in to the crappy 3rd person view.

The camera is much improved this time around in third person, plus you can change the camera to a more RTS-like angle (you could also do this in the first game).

After the demo, I preordered the game. I found the game relaxing in a way...funny and not so intense.
I think I will have fun with this.

Played the demo on PS3 and while it was fun I thought the framerate and graphics weren't up to what I was expecting (played the first one on PC).

Is it me, the console versions or the PS3 version?

The framerate problems are in the 360 version at least. Couldn't tell ya about the PS3 version for sure but I figure it's probably just as bad with the jumps as the 360 is. The Wii version doesn't suffer from the same problems but isn't the same game.

get the PC version

So bought. Absolutely loved the first and I will buy it on that alone. Although the demo only reinforced this decision for me.

So no, it's not an entirely perfect experience. But all of the above complaints -- even combined with my minor irritation with details like the marionette-like cut scene animation -- barely contests my overall joy at just playing this damn thing. The original Overlord was a perfect send-up and reversal of fantasy game clichés, and the sequel is even more satisfying while fixing a lot of the first game's rough patches. Coupled with other improvements, like the upgraded visual detail, draw distance, and the greater sense of weight behind the Overlord's animations, all add up to something a hell of a lot better than a game I already liked an awful damn lot in the first place.

If that dark place in everyone's heart lies a little bit closer to the surface of yours, this is far and away the best place to let it out. I mean, unless you already have a tower, harem, and army of hilarious little bastards to do your bidding. In which case, do you need a roommate?

i downloaded the demo yesterday kind of on a whim... as much fun as killing seals is and having a mass of guys just tearing stuff up, it kind of seems as if this thing will appeal to 12 year olds more than me. couldnt get into it. sorry :(

Welcome to the world of video games! ;)

Really liked the first one, which was hugely underrated. I think I heard one podcast talk about it for like five minutes. And I'll probably get this sooner than expected after crossing Anno 1404 off my list.

My backlog is already way too big, otherwise I'd buy this at launch. For now I'll have to wait a few months.

Actually more interested in getting the Wii one than Overlord II, though hopefully I'll get both (and Minions) in the next few months. Overlord is a great franchise, it just seems like a terrible decision to release all three games on the same day. It's impossible for me to support even one at the moment, much less three. :(

Still need to try out the demo to see how this is on the PS3, though. Need to get on that!

Was the PC version the best for the first one?

Of course. The controls are better for one thing.

Anyway, I'm definitely getting the PC version and the DS game. Too bad I don't have a Wii. That way, I would own all the Overlord games.

The Gaf releases thread as well as Gamestop have this coming out tomorrow, but the OP lists it as the 26th, which is the correct release date? Was it pushed back slightly?

Coming out tomorrow in NA, 26th in EU

God awful box art.

I have seen the cover on xbox live multiple times advertising the demo, and I never realized it was a sequel--it just looks like it says "Overlord."

I played the PS3 demo and it was awful. The framerate felt below 20 most of the time and the graphics looked worse then the original. Could it be because it was an old build or just another bad port job?

Good point.

The 360 demo goes down a couple of times too ... so no I dont think so.

I liked the original a lot, but found the control to be sort of frustrating as the game progressed. The pathfinding for your minions got to be a big pain in the ass.

yeah - and it looks like all the fucking flaws are in the sequel too. thats why i will pass on it.

I hope the framerate for the ps3 version has been fixed for the final version. It was bordering on unplayable in the demo.

OP, do you work for gametrailers?

No, I don't. They just had a nice summary of videos of Overlord. Since this game seems to be going under the radar of players and sites it was hard to find movies and such from the game. I just took the easy way.

In honor of Overlord II coming out, I started up a fresh new game of the first Overlord, since I never actually got past the first world. I'm about halfway-to-3/4 of the way finished with the game and I'm absolutely loving it so far. I didn't think that there would be such diversity with the different minions, enemies, and, especially, the levels. Sure, there's a few control annoyances, but from the demo of the second game, they seem to be much improved this time around. Hope to finish it up this week so I can be ready for Overlord II for the weekend.

Oh man. First line of the 1up review:

It's kind of a cliché in BDSM circles that the sub is really the one in charge of things, and it's a truism that easily carries over into Overlord 2.

That's a little more than I wanted to know about you, Sharkey my man.:lol

Looking forward to this, will be getting the PC version. I played the demo on 360 and found it to be really fun, but the framerate was horrible at times, dipping into the ~10-15fps area.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first game even though the lack of an in-game map was annoying to say the least. With the addition of an in-game map and all other improvements made, I'm actually kinda hyped for this.

Pfft, why are games close to always released on Fridays in EU? :(

Its out today?

Yes.

I've put the 360 version on hold to go through the Wii version entirely first. It really does feel like Overlord 1.5, though I guess it would actually be Overlord .5. It's great though; the pointer really clears up a lot of the pathin complaints I had about the first one (and overlord 2). They pull a lot of little graphic tricks on the Wii and it ends up looking pretty tight. Haven't gotten to the DS one yet, but it's looking interesting.
