Overlord II - The official thread of Minions

I picked it up today on 360 and I'd say it's pretty much just as good as Overlord was. The charm is definitely still there. I haven't played the first Overlord in 2 years so I can't really gauge how much Overlord 2 has improved over the original.

Quick question about the beginning level:

I found the first spell stone, and had my minions pick it up. The announcer was in the middle of saying something, but I exited the cave. Now there is no spellstone in the cave, and there is one sitting outside protected by gnomes.

Was I supposed to have retrieved that first spellstone before walking outside? Did I just bug the game?

This freaked me out too... That's the same spellstone, don't worry.

Played for about a hour or so, but wow this game is awesome. Great humor. Fun gameplay. More Overlord. I've already laughed at more stuff in the first hour then I do in most games. Hope this does well sale wise.

Overlord II is a sequel that is neither bigger nor better than its predecessor. The size and scope have been dialed back to something that is more akin to a straight action game. And since none of the frustrating elements of the first have been fixed -- namely the camera, control, and save structure -- this game just isn't much fun. No amount of British wit could bring a smile to my face as I treaded through the tedium that is Overlord II.

ive read alot about the save system but i dont remeber it being a problem when i played the first =\

I've got to agree with IGN here actually. So far, at least, I've hardly had to use my minions in any clever or strategic or tactical way, I'm just rushing everything I see. Overlord was far more tactical.

That sucks, i think it was the 1up review that said rushing them in would just result in aload of minion deaths and that you would have to find high ground for the reds, rush in the browns and then bring in the greens from behind. But then i guess it could get harder later on in the game, ill find out tomorrow anyway.

Yes, you will need to do that sometimes, but battles are so sporadic and the controls are such a nightmare that even a simple strategy like the one you describe will leave you open for attack as you're trying to get your minions in the right locations.

This is where the Wii version wins, mostly. But even that one is isn't spared by bugs and frustrating sections. At least it has Vita-Chamber style respawn.

I'm pulling my fucking hair out with this game; the camera doesn't work for shit, the lock-on is useless, the minion A.I. is bullshit.

I'm on a bit where I have to get minions to stand on four different platforms. It's the most ridiculously frustrating shit in the world. Give me a fucking Wiimote or a Mouse, becuase this is useless.

Really I don't see the issues that are being mentioned here. I mean the game is by far not perfect but shit, this is so much fun and much better then I thought it would be.

Maybe later in the game I will have a harder time but so far I'm personally liking this more then the first overlord and the 1up review definetly falls under how I fell about the game personally.

The spider bit? You don't need to stand on four switches, just sweep them across the buttons. (And for future reference, all switches are the same -- well except for one, but its an easy puzzle)

The camera is touchy. Try not to press up or down, as that'll start to move the minions (and the camera with it) only the left and right and R3 to look around.

Make more use of the guard post feature, it's essential to both this and the first game.

Hm, in the jungle now, just got the Halo spell, and I'm wandering- How the hell do I change spells? I've tried every button on the keyboard, going to the magic workshop in my tower, and bringing up the tab menu and trying to select it. Ever since I got the "domination" spell, I've lost my original zappy spell and now I can't use Halo. halp?

You have them all at once, they just have different controls. Halo is hold Alt + D, dominate is hold alt on civilian, target (zapping) is hold alt on hostile target I think. Except I can't fucking remember the controls for the one where you supercharge/consume a minion and they don't list these controls anywhere, which has got to be the biggest fuck up in this game, my only real problem in fact.

I'm so sick of the guys with the like vacuum guns destroying all my minions. How the hell do I deal with these things without losing half my squad? Ergh!

I'm enjoying the game. Camera controls are pretty wonky, but I can live with it. Once you realize that RS left and right is camera, but diagonals start sweeping, it's less annoying (but still annoying).

The eradicators in the factory? As you progress further into the level, getting past will get more complex. Here are some hints:

Part 1
sneak by them; use the grass and watch their pathing to get past.

Part 2
attack them from behind. some eradicators will pass by hiding spots in tall foliage, elevated ledges or small alleyways. Use a waypoints so your minions will cloak, when their backs are turned the greens will pounce automatically. Make sure your greens aren't standing in their path, otherwise they'll be detected

Part 3
The gnomes are useful. Combine with Part 2.

Part 4
There's another creature locked up. Find the switch!

Thanks, but i'm speaking of after that, when they are found among other enemy types.

Remo has been playing this on Steam a lot, I'd love to hear his impressions, has he made a review?
I haven't, but I talk about it on the Idle Thumbs episode that's going up tonight or tomorrow morning. I've actually only played it for a few hours so far so they aren't comprehensive impressions.

For those looking for a place to farm for life force, once you beat the everlight facility, you can go back and the gnomes you let out will spawn indefinitely. I've simply left my right trigger taped down in front off that door, and am letting it go for an hour or 2 until I never need to harvest again. Cheap, but whatever.

Yeah, I am. But then this happens:

You lock on to an object. Its the wrong one, so you tap the right analog stick to choose another. It locks on to a Guard Post, still the wrong object, so you tap the right analog stick. Oh fuck its moved my guard post!

Control complications like this are innveitable with such a convoluted game, but it really doesn't help to tell me that in the heat of battle, when all my Greens just get eaten in one fell swoop because of the controls.

This thread reminded me to pick up the original on the PS3, which I'd been meaning to do for ages. Available for less than ÂŁ9 as well.

A better strategy than tape is to place a waypoint marker thing on the doorway so your minions sit there and auto attack them.

I disagree, since using that method they don't always bring me back all the life force, treasure, etc. Using my method they don't miss any of it.

I am at the Gate to Everlight. How the hell do I get to the 2nd key? It looks like I need Greens but I don't have any.

They're throwing the poison gas stuff at you? There is another way around, a higher path that takes you to behind them. I don't remember the specifics but just look around the edges of where you've already explored on the island, look for some other path.

I just choose my greens and then sweep them behind the bastards.

Yeah, that part really confused me, totally missed the stairway right beside the place where you put the first tome thing.

I've looked everywhere and can't find this sweeping path or anything. This is driving me nuts. I've been here over an hour :lol

I'm really, really annoyed that there isn't a single walkthrough online yet.

Wow, the minimap makes it look like it's just circling back to a previous area, but apparently it goes up. Damn shitty minimap/notuseful larger map.

the graphics in the demo seemed better, but nothing else.

Just about everything other than the minimap (lack of) in the first was great, so this made me happy. They added some new stuff, but if you didn't like the first, this is just more of the same.

I feel like Overlord 2 improves on several of the faults of the first game but retains the things that made it fun. I finished it yesterday and my only real complaints are the lack of a control list and a ridiculously easy end boss battle.

How many hours did it take you?

Reading the thread, most of the control frustration stuff seems to be on console versions (or people playing it with gamepads possibly).
Makes me glad I'm going to be playing keyboard/mouse (which should hopefully not be as touchy)

I'm at about 9h40m and I just recovered the Green Hive. I haven't just been gunning through the story though, I tried to explore a bit to find hidden artifacts, and grind some lifeforce.

Be aware that YMMV, I'm a little farther than that point after 5h50. I don't feel like I've been rushing through the story either (did all the Nordberg sidequests), I however didn't grind.

I really liked the first Overlord and I like this one too but it has its faults. I agree with the comments regarding how frustrating it can be to manoeuver greens behind the heavy dudes when they're mingled with regular enemies. My main disappointment so far is the elven land which has felt more like a series of sidequests than a coherent experience. I am however not through with it yet.
Overall I'm enjoying the Pratchettian setting (I laughed at the consort being named Kelda), the graphics and the gameplay that sometimes feels almost MMO-like. I just wish it controlled better on console.

I was stuck on Gate to Everlight Key #2 for over an hour, so that probably inflated my play time. The Green Hive is supposedly a half-way point in the game, so it's probably ~10-12 hours if you never get stuck anywhere and don't die much and don't backtrack to grind lifeforce and gold.

What minion combination do you guys use? I find Browns are the most useful, other than passing obstacles. Browns kill things the quickest and stop enemies from moving.

18 hours. Took my friend 21.

There were several points in the game that I could just see in a Terry Pratchett novel as they played out, particularly some of the stuff towards the end like (Ending spoilers!)
Florien's betrayal and backstory.

While I enjoyed the game, the lack of any interesting sidequests or any kind of endgame content whatsoever, really left me wanting more. I enjoyed my playthrough, but can't recommend more than a rental of this one.

The ps3 is a beefed up 7600GT with a fancy processor, so I'd imagine that would yield better results than your PC... (on the other hand, a fancy schmancy ATI 4850 can be had for like $89 right now)
Y'know, after you posted that I actually went and priced out a new video card, and you're right -- the prices have gone way WAY down, and so has power consumption! My PSU (305w Dell) has always been the bottleneck, but I've never been able to bring myself to replace it. In any case, my search for a new graphics card met an abrupt end when I hit a new bottleneck... my CPU case.

All these new cards, with their big cooling fan units that run the length of the card, they won't fit!

I got the PS3 version and besides the bad framerate it's crashing every time I quit to the XMB. WTF!? How can something like that get through quality control?

How come that deepbrown claims (@beyond 3D) that the PS3 framerate is fixed compared to the demo? It's very near to unplayable, hovering around 20 I would guess. 360 is better, but not by much (demo at least). But the demo section was also better on PS3, it gets much worse later on...

There are some fanless video cards on the market, but only grab one of those if you've got room elsewhere for another fan to supplement it.

While I do not actually see the lower framerate on the Xbox360 version, I can tell that it is suffering at times because my eyes start to get tired after a few hours of playing. Also happens with Red Faction btw.
