Overly patriotic American imagery

When I visit my family and drive through Indiana, I pass this billboard:

I haven't given the statement much thought — it might not be as ridiculous as I think it is — but at face value it makes me cringe; had to slow down the first time I saw it. The crying eagle is just the cherry on top

That's just me though. Anyone like this stuff? Anybody here uplifted by it?

Beautiful. You can never love America too much.

people raised with real freedoms and liberties tend to be proud of that fact

what does canada have to be proud of?

Poutine, bagged milk, mable syrup, etc. Plenty.

But you guys love Canadian stuff. We ship off our turds to your country, like Drake and Justin Bieber. Hell, even Celine Dion.

I'd like to think they are fleeing your country full of moosecock and terrible beer for greener pastures.

is this the worst comic panel ever or what

Captain America really is the worst. I play twice as hard when I get matched up against someone who plays as him in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 online

yeah, we really are secretly obsessed with Canadian culture. It's true, the hat controls the person wearing it.

It's not cool at all really to fly the flag in UK or Ireland because both flags have negative connotations attached to them due to their association with far right/paramilitary organisations

It's a bit of a culture shock visiting the US and seeing the giant flags everywhere. Nothing wrong with a bit of pride in a person's country, though. I think it's pretty neat

Sometimes I'll drive past a house with a flag pole in the back yard flying the Australian flag, and it'll just sit in my thoughts for a few seconds as something quite odd. My parents told me and my brother that they wanted to do the same thing once. Our response was "Why!?".

It's embarrassing(imagery and exceptionalism in general) and partly why i rather claim I'm Canadian when asked by foreigners(dual).

Yeah, I don't really care about the message at all, but at least put the fucking words in the right order. Don't make us look like idiots on top of everything else.

It's from the bible belt...part of the country that looks down on education. That's all you need to know.

I'm glad Americans do all the hard work. We just consume their stuff.

Without the guns, the Bible humpers, the fatties, the retarded. We consume the greatest products without having to deal with their bullshit and social problems.

Thank you murica.

Other countries don't have social issues? lol

And last I checked some other countries are doing a little too much consuming too and becoming lardasses themselves.

Yeah the hardest problem you guys have to deal with is finding the perfect building to jump off of.

Honestly? As a Canadian that vists the US a few times a year I LOVE Americans.

America is the only country that if your car breaks down on the highway you are guaranteed a room full of people will stop to give you a boost.

In America a room of 10,000 will passionately debate your nations fate. 1000 - 2000 may die in that room as Americans "debate" your nations fate ... But end of line the marines will be coming.

I'm not talking from a middle eastern perspective. This is a Canadian that interacts with Americans every day. I LOVE Americans. Yes they are loud and boisterous and somewhat annoying. But they are also the kindest people you will ever meet in terms of being willing to individually sacrifice for those that meet their standards. As a Canadian I feel privileged to meet their standards.

As a Canadian I would die for America. They share the same beliefs that I do -- freedom of beliefs, freedom of religion, freedom general to speak your mind. America is the only country where if you have a problem a room full of people they will try to help you try to solve it. Half the room may die as people argue the best way to solve your problem, but in the end a solution WILL be devised. Thats America. And some of the best damn fried chicken you ever tasted.

whats wrong with celebrating the greatest empire in human history?

we gave you the iphone, the internet, the computer you are on right now is running an operating system designed by us, you want to watch our movies, our music, worried about our stock market at wallstreet, united nations builds its hq here, you grew up eating our food in mcdonalds and burgerkings no matter what country you were in, we destroyed the crumbling british empire in 1776 and saved the world in ww2 from hitler and took you to space. pretty much your entire modern existence is built around something America gave to you.

but celebrating it? nooooooo, that just hurts too much doesnt it?

Best post ever. Heck, best thread ever.

I love Overly Patriotic American Imagery. It's so over the top I always get a laugh out of it, especially as an American.

USA! USA! USA!

USA! USA! USA!

The best thing about america is their unwavering belief in America and the ideals it represents. And I say that as a Canadian that visits the us frequently. Red, Yelllow, Black or White, Americans believe in America. I do too.

Can I just say here that "Real American" might be the greatest pro-America song ever written?

...No, I'm serious. Almost every other patriot jam just blows rambles on about how awesome America is and how great it is to be an American just because the song assumes that America is inherently awesome with very little else to elaborate on said awesomeness. The most they might do is mention the wonders of the natural American landscape, technological or cultural milestones that might have happened in the US, o just constantly talking about how "free" we apparently are, which, to me, just doesn't seem like enough to enough to truly justify all the bragging about the country you are living in. "Real American," on the other hand, spends the majority of it's time describing the strong moral character of the song's narrator (facing challenges despite how emotionally taxing they are, standing up for his friends, "fight[ing] for the rights of every man"), with those qualities defining him as a "Real American" This paints the picture that all "real" Americans have the same heroic qualities as the song's narrator, along with implying that one who lacks these qualities is not a "real" American and that one could be a "real" American without ever even having stepped on American soil as long as they held those same qualities. The song really makes America and being American seem like truly great thing that deserves to be lauded, and is probably the only "Fuck Yeah America" song that I can listen to without retching.

tl;dr: Other Songs: I'm awesome because I'm American
Real American: I'm American because I'm awesome

Actually, I think you're spot on here. This song gets made fun of for the cheesiness and Hulk Hogan, but I'm telling you its pretty awesome. Not like I'm going to jam out in my car to it, but you won't hear me talking shit on this song. It comes from a genuine place, not like all the cash-in shit you see where they throw up images of soldiers, eagles, and the flag and then watch the money from idiots roll in.

You're an awesome person. Seriously. If you ever come by Universal Studios when I'm working, you're totally getting the best discounts.

Hit me up if you're ever in Portland, OR. I've got a denim jacket with the flag on the back for you. Well, ok, not really. But I like you, man. You sound like a guy who appreciates common decency and that's pretty awesome in a world that gets scarier all the time.

Why not the real America, Fuck Yeah song?

It is sarcastic but at the same time sincere. I love it.

I'm surprised people don't understand the message. Maybe it's because they don't come from conservative Christian backgrounds.

The billboard is telling the driver "No, don't assume that God blesses America. America needs to follow God."

Yeah, this is absolutely the case. It's not exactly overdone pro-America patriotism. It's actually criticizing many Americans for their lack of religious faith. The eagle is presumably crying because of Americans' lack of faith, or something.
