Overly patriotic American imagery

Our transistion to democracy was self-started and occured multiple times. Also, we were touched muuuuuuuuuuuuh less harshly by WW1 & WW2 than most of Europe.

@Roastbeef

I'm from Ger,many, where anyone claiming pride in the nation can safely be counted to be in the far right,

You answered your own question. Over there, there isn't much of a distinction between patriotism, jingoism, and nationalism. There's more nuance over here. The rest is having Pygmalion standards near-impossible for any institution created by humanity to meet.

I understand the part about nuances, which doesn't however answer any question i asked: i did not ask how the nationalism in america is different from here, but what motivates/justifies/rationalises it at a personal level and how it is different from, say, racial pride. i don't really understand the part about Pygmalion standards... as in: i'm not sure what Pygmalion is supposed to mean. google tells me that he's some dude from a greek legend who got infatuated with a statue, and that the Pygmalion effect decribes a phenomenon where high expectations lead to increased results. I couldn't really make sense of what you wrote either way. Could you please explain that in some further detail?

This could have been such a better thread without the anti American drivel

please let me know if you considered my post anti-american, because if you did, i'd love to hear the reasons for it, as i just considered it anti-nationalist.

Also, did you read the thread title?

whats wrong with celebrating the greatest empire in human history?

we gave you the iphone, the internet, the computer you are on right now is running an operating system designed by us, you want to watch our movies, our music, worried about our stock market at wallstreet, united nations builds its hq here, you grew up eating our food in mcdonalds and burgerkings no matter what country you were in, we destroyed the crumbling british empire in 1776 and saved the world in ww2 from hitler and took you to space. pretty much your entire modern existence is built around something America gave to you.

but celebrating it? nooooooo, that just hurts too much doesnt it?

Did he get banned for this? Because this is like Independence Day 2 quality material.

Watching the world cup I realized that EVERY OTHER COUNTRY HAS THE SAME KIND OF NATIONAL PRIDE.

I really dont see why everyone complains about America patriotism. The Olympics is proof that everyone loves their home country and they should be proud to show it off.

That being said, Enjoy this video i made for Independence Day. http://youtu.be/YcVMuiypwUE

Is it weird that the billboard bothers me greatly because it doesn't say "God Bless America"? Like I don't care for the message but "America - Bless God" is like the worst combination. Even "America - God Bless" is better.

It confused me. Are we Americans supposed to be blessing God because we are in fact higher beings or something? Isn't God supposed to be blessing us mere mortals? Who wrote that billboard and how the hell do you mess up three words?

You, like the OP and too many people in this thread, are interpreting it wrong. As I said when the thread was first posted, it's a criticism of Americans not being religious enough, not praise. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=63191466&postcount=198

When they talk about how weird it is when Americans chant "USA", it usually refers to non-sporting events. All nations will of course be nationalistic during sports games. Even the Germans. However, I think Europeans find it odd that we have to chant "USA" at non-sporting events, such as when they found the remaining Boston Marathon bomber/etc etc

I've even heard it at concerts which makes no sense at all. I think some people do it ironically though.

Yes.

Happy 4th of July!

Shouldn't it then say "God - Bless America" asking God to bless the country? Why would mortals bless a god? How does that make sense?

By saying America - Bless God, they're saying people need to take action. That's what Protestantism is about, people having to choose to try to be among the saved...

i'm so patriotic, i assume anyone that loves freedom is an american. even if they tell me they're not, i will still think they are one of us anyway. the only two differences is their flag sucks, and animal isn't as cool as an eagle

Also, I don't like the physics of those eagle tears, they go like in a diagonal path. Maybe there's a fat 'murcan behind the bird creating a tidal wave effect.

God America Bless.

America B Godless

First thing I thought of when I saw the billboard was if Americans were supposed to bless God and the theme happened to fit July 4th.
