Overwatch 1 shuts down October 2nd

Well if someone ever charges you 100 dollars for a dead dude's concert then yeah, money stolen.

Nah dude but seriously, a videogame is a product while a concert is a service, they don't have anything to do with each other.
Games like Overwatch, League of Legends, Wow... are Game-as-a-Service (GaaS) because you may have the client part but not the server part which is only provided as a service.

This is super lame and Anti-Gamer / Consumer. Remember this BS people.

I don't own Overwatch but was impressed when I played it at one of my friends house who worked with me doing game reviews back around launch. Solid shooter, but all the BS around it turned me away pretty hard.

based on this thread, they gotta clean up their marketing because people are still confused about what's happening to the game. whole communication/decision making about this has been retarded from the start.

but this isn't them killing servers or anything, overwatch isn't really going away, it's becoming overwatch 2, which is free for the same multiplayer component that is the entirety of overwatch 1. it's basically a big 2.0 patch rather than a new game.

that includes keeping all the cosmetics etc. unlocked already in ow1, they all stay

looking forward to overwatch 2. not buying the watchpoint pack though. i'll just buy the battle pass individually each season.

What the hell happened to Overwatch? When it came out I remember the IP being pretty damn popular. The characters were everywhere, there were talks of a movie, and then after a year it just faded it obscurity.

That is the problem. Video games are becoming a service.

Not a fan of this kind of thing in principle. Games that are server-reliant should shut down only when the cost of running them exceeds the revenue generated from operating them. "My way or the highway" to the playerbase is pretty damn rude.

That said, not that Overwatch's community hasn't given incentive - They've been bitching about lack of new content for years. This wasn't a big deal for me. I just enjoyed playing the game however many hundreds of hours I put in.

To go on more of a tangent, I quit playing... around a year ago, not because I wasn't having fun anymore but because I'd gotten about everything I could meaningfully get out of the experience imo and I'd weighed the ratio of good times/bad times to just not be worth it for greener pastures. I've wondered if more content would have kept me around longer.

As a huge fan of the first game I actually applaud them doing this. Making the player base bigger while likely giving the 6 v 6 people a permanent mode in arcade is infinitely better then having a bunch of sad sack bitter douche bags sit in the first game as some walled off community. As somebody said above, overwatch 1 to 2 isn't really a set the world on fire ultra different experience and let's face it, the game people bought as overwatch 1 back in 2016 isn't anywhere close to what OW1 is now in 2022. You can't go back to multiple same hero picks (unless that mode is active in arcade) and the original characters stats like overpowered tracer and crazy shield bastion flat out don't exist.

They are giving old and new players a free route and promises of new content in doing what they did from 2016 - 2020, refine the game for better or worse. Let the first game die.

There were even Lego sets. I liked the game too. They just managed it horribly. They became weirdly focused on esports tweaking instead of just making and supporting a game. I think it could have been a lot bigger. The fact that OW2 has team size of 5 just confirms they are doubling down on their esports balancing obsession and not moving back towards what made the game good in the beginning.

bought it for 15bux. enjoyed it. then they started that queue thing where u could only pick certain characters instead of picking whoever u want....and grew to hate the game and stopped playing

Just give the audience what they want - sexy anime women characters with phat asses and tight leggings/hot pants.

Never in my life have I seen such a mismanaged franchise as overwatch.

Bad balancing.
Balls deep in esport.
Witholding content to work in a "sequel".
Release half of the "sequel".
Label an update as a "sequel".
Essentially removing the first game.

I really don't expect the "sequel" to do well.

What do you mean no? you are an animal. Sex, survival, and eating are hardcoded into your brain and pull your strings just as much as your thoughts do.
Some are more driven by it than other people.

I am not you. Accept it or don't I don't care.

They can take our game, but they can't take away our rule 34 and sexy cosplay chicks!

Also, I'm guessing all my lootbox stuff and unlocks carry over to the sequel.

Woke, lootboxes and greed happened.

What happened was Blizzard started catering the game towards the pro players and in the process they turned what was originally a casual, good time game into a miserable pit of raging try-hards.
I'm getting really tired of game developers catering thier entire game to esports. That's ignoring the vast majority of your user base, it doesn't make much sense to me.

Locking heroes high on the season pass is the most egregious thing any high profile F2P has done, Halo Infinite doesn't even lock abilities into it's awful season pass. Nor does Rainbow 6 Siege, as least you can earn their banana bucks through play to unlock heroes, if Blizzard had to do a shitty system they should have went with that.

yea I call bullshit on this dick move.

The game has a sizable install base and this is just being done to force people onto Overwatch 2.

I paid for OW1, how can they just shut it down like this? Between this and other changes they've made, it's like they're just trying to kill the game. I've just uninstalled it sigh.

Also, please change McCree's name back thx

you can only buy rare or epic non-event skins with OW1 coins.
Help Me Im Poor Donald Duck GIF
Okay, but I meant all the things I've already unlocked. All my skins and voices and stuff. I should Google and make all my stuff gets carried over and not simply deleted out of hand when they transition existing players from OW 1 to 2.

OW was one of my favorite games of the previous generation...
I just can't bring myself to play OW2, it looks like a hot mess..
this is a bad move and just makes my apprehension to buying OW that much stronger.

False.

The game crashed immediately after Fortnite hit console and became the phenomenon it was/is. There's no reason to suggest Blizzard shifted it from a casual game to a competitive game right as Fortnite launched.

Don't care what the marketing dudes say, it's still a product.

Are you fine with those kind of practices? Paying full price for a game and getting it taken away from you?

It's not a marketing term. It's a classification.

All games get taken away from us. Hardware failure, boredom, indifference...no game lasts forever. Overwatch simply lasted longer than most.

Not really , since you had the experience of being at a concert.

I had the experience of playing an enjoyable game. Only the game didn't leave after 3 hours...I can still experience it today, and likely for the next few years.

No, it's a scam. They are selling you the game as a product (asking 60€ for it) and then trying to make it pass for a service. while having the audacity of trying to do the same a second time with Overwatch 2.
Sorry but I don't have any respect for people who are fine with this. Like imagine having a shelf full of games you can't play, who wan't that?

Look at games like WoW or LoL. Those games are services since they don't ask you any money for downloading the client. You pay for either the time you are enjoying the service (like a concert) or for some added stuff like skins or whatever.

Speak for yourself lol. Games like DOOM from fucking 1993 still have a community, one which will probably last much longer than Overwatch's.

Overwatch 2 is free to play.

You misunderstand. Doom has zero interest to me and basically everyone else on planet earth. It's essentially garbage. I'll never play it again. Overwatch 2 will still be played by millions of gamers.

Cool, didn't know that. Still, this situation with OW 1 is a total scam.

Fuck off. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Yes. It's laughably terrible. Which is why no one plays it today.
You are a fool who doesn't knwo what he's talking about. Google a bit about the WAD scene or the Cacoawards if you are really interested.

What's the scam? Overwatch 2 is free to play and everyone's skins and emotes are transfering over from O1. Literally no scam.
Paid products (specially those at a high price) should never be taken away from the customer.

Truth has to matter.
Truth matters yeah. Your opinion about DOOM being garbage doesn't.
