Overwatch is Eurogamer's GotY 2016. Uncharted 4 is Readers' Choice.

If you know Eurogamer, though - and if you've ever been into its office on any lunchbreak in recent months, or been witness to the endless conversations on the matter in our IM channels - there was only ever really going to be one winner. Blizzard's Overwatch has captured the imagination like few other games in recent years, delivering a bright, brilliant and exceptionally designed team shooter that instantly became best in class. Its success means there will be countless imitators in years to come - and 2016 already boasted a couple of lookalikes in its wake - but it's hard to see anyone toppling Overwatch for years to come. This is simply the foundation for an obsession that's likely to run and run and run.

Well done to both the editorial and reader picks. Both games are a part of my personal top 10 and both are very worthy of meritorious acknowledgment.

We collectively had a pretty amazing year of games.

UC4 is damn good despite all the criticisms I had of it. I'm sure most people were gobsmacked at the graphics alone throughout their entire play through.

And yet GAF thinks most of the gaming community hates walking simulators.

Solid editorial choice. I love Overwatch, too.

If this was the Oscars then Overwatch would get my Best Game and UC4 would get 10 other ones for its graphics, story, acting, and all the technical ones. It's an absolute masterpiece but it can't match Overwatch in pure fun for me.

If you go to the Gotyblog website, UC4 seems to be the favorite for readers but Overwatch is the favorite for Critics. Kinda Interesting.
They are both very close in overall GOTY too. There hasn't been a a close competition like this since RDR vs Mass Effect 2 back in 2010.

Whoever it was that compared video game awards to Marvel movies winning Best picture Oscars was dead on. Fucking overwatch and uncharted 4 lol

You realise that's a 30 game, right? That's fantastically written and fun?

This post, lol

You clearly didn't play it. I wouldn't even complain if B&W was number one. The fact that it was DLC is irrelevant.

I didn't play it, The Witcher 3 was already disappointing enough for me but still, it's a DLC, not even available stand-alone. It shouldn't be allowed to run with this year's game. It's tied to a 2015 game. No matter the quality.

But no one cares what you think about what the Eurogamer readers think.

No one care that you do not care about what I said, I'm free to comment however I want as long as it's in the rules, even if you don't like it.

Readers are too scared to give goty to a multiplayer shooter for some reason

They need a story, dialogues, ability to kill NPCs etc. That's the game, not the gameplay itself.

Eh, to be honest, there's a lot of people who just don't play multiplayer shooters at all. I'm not taking anything away from UCr, but it certainly has broader appeal and for Overwatch to even get that close with no single player content is an achievement.

Games are more than just gameplay though.
For goty lists I think gameplay is much more important than everything else. For example I would never give goty to GTA V because of terrible shooting mechanic. And this is one of the most important parts of the game.
Or they just enjoy it more.
I saw a lot of people saying that "it's just a multiplayer shooter lol, it shouldn't be goty".

Yeah maybe that's true

Titanfall 2 and Doom are there because of the single player campaigns.

I looks to me like not all their readers like multiplayer shooters.

Uncharted 4 was very pretty, but the gameplay was...stale.

As someone who played (and loved) Uncharted 1, 2, and 3 (2 is one of my favorite games of all time), 4 was just more of the same. Well, those car sections were new I guess. But also really boring. I'm glad Naughty Dog is on to bigger and better things. The story was fairly lackluster.

I would put both Overwatch and Doom ahead of Uncharted 4. Easily.

That's your (frankly, weird) take on GOTY, other people don't have the same one and if you can't understand that, you should really be more open minded.

Journey was my GOTY 2012, not because it had the best gameplay but because it was the best overall game I played that year.

I adore Uncharted 2 and 3.

The problem with 4 is that it is like twice the length it needs to be. The gameplay didn't evolve much but the combat and rope mechanics were fun, too bad they were barely used in any satisfying manner. There is this one shoot out towards the very end that was so fantastic. Swinging all over the place, great vantage points, so many abilities to make cool plays... why didn't the game have more of that?

Walking simulators at least typically tell stories or let you explore something. Uncharted 4's idea of filling 2x the length wasn't to add more plot, add any real exploration or cool systems. It was just to make the corridors and auto platforming extremely long and more tedious. I can actually recall the point where I was getting exasperated waiting for the game to end. Too bad it didn't for several more hours.

Ultimately, I still liked it well enough and the ending was great...but I finished like 13 games this year and I didn't put it in my top 10. Franchise goes out with with UC2 still the reigning champion, IMO.

I find Overwatch to be brilliantly executed and has given me hundreds of hours of fun and frustration.

Worthy GOTY

My guess would be that, for people that had never played Uncharted before, 4 would be mind blowing. But if you're a veteran of the series, I don't really know what you get out of 4 that you're not already sick of doing.

UC4 is my personal #2, so I'm glad to see it getting some love. I never expected to love the story to an Uncharted game as much as I did 4. The gameplay itself was just okay, I ended up turning auto-aim on after the first hour just because I just don't give a shit about Uncharted's tired gunplay anymore and it was just an obstacle to more story.

The ND Uncharted game came out in 2011, and there's really nothing like the series. So, it's kinda easy to not get tired of it, at least for me. And going by how many awards it's received, that goes for a lot of people as well.
