An Open Response to Athene
Jan 24 2013 · 23 comments · News
(The current landscape of live broadcasting is shifting, and it’s leaving many broadcasters outside of Twitch very concerned about their future plans, whether its simply as a hobbyist or a business. Few have expressed this concern greater than Athene, who created the open letter seen below in this post.)

Athene,

Thank you for not only taking the time to share your thoughts with us, but for taking a chance and being so outspoken on this issue. We know it’s not always easy, and it doesn’t always please everyone, but it’s always appreciated.

As you and your fellow broadcasters consider the current circumstances and decide whether you’d like to be a part of the Twitch community, we’d like to take a few moments to address some of your key concerns, one of which is innovation. At Twitch, we’ve never been one to rest on our laurels and our roadmap for 2013 ensures that we have plenty of work ahead of us to continue expanding our infrastructure and improving our quality of service around the world.

Over the past year our audience has continued to grow month over month — a trend that shows no sign of slowing down — and because of that, both our partners and community alike expect greatness. They’ve come to trust and rely upon Twitch to provide exceptional service and it’s our challenge to meet that demand. Because of this, we understand that we must never stop innovating or improving our service.

Also, the survival of their company depended on a $5 million buyout by Machinima, which Machinima backed out of last week after finding itself in a similarly precarious financial situation.

They are a youtube channel how are they running out of money?

Less competition for Twitch is bad but yea this site always seemed to run really poor on my machine compared to Twitch and I was happy when Spooky went back to Twitch.

Im glad that it died due to it's awful name

THESE GUYS LIKE SAYING VIDEO GAME LINGO, LET'S USE An OVERUSED AND POSSIBLY RACIST ONE TO REPRESENT US. ALSO, DON'T FORGET TO ADD 1337 SPEAK. KIDS LOVE THE 1337 SPEAK

Twitch and Justin aren't much better names. Ustream is a pretty good one, as far as live streaming sites, go. Livestream has the best name, probably, but no one uses it anymore.

I dunno, I thought Own3D worked pretty well from a technical perspective.

I consistently saw high-framerate streams with little to no buffering.

same, i liked it more than twitch for watching leagues streams. i wasnt aware of them being
super shady tho so theres that and thats why they lose i guess.

someone needs to compete with twitch.tv it will be really tough to break through otherwise for new streamers to go up against twitch established streamers....youtube syndrome.

The only thing I went to own3d for was when it was streaming some unreleased games that were under embargo and streamers would get banned on twitch.

so people are gonna go to a site they dont kno to watch a streamer they dont know? k.
i agree that competition is good, but that doesnt solve that problem.

it looks like twitch has already thought this out, just look at the front-page. i watched a charity stream a few days ago (extralives) and it was featured on the front-page of twitch. the bump in viewership from the front-page viewership was strong. here's a graph the stream ran on their donation total. twitch is incredibly ahead of the game and some of the features they have (like subscriptions) are very forward-thinking.

edit: just to spell this out a bit further, i'm pretty sure the algorithms they run actually encourage smaller channels rather than just insta-front page the largest streams. i rarely see the major twitch LoL players on there in comparison to smaller streams.

is twitch even making money at this point or are they living off of VC funds?

selling ad space isn't the healthiest business to be in anymore.

Own3d was superior for PQ so it will be missed. It just didn't have the variety of games and personalities Twitch has. Twitch PQ is terrible and so are their servers.

Maybe in your neck of the woods, but own3d had barely 720P and usually around 480p whenever I tried to watch it. Twitch on the other hand has 1080p+.

Hmm I don't like this, we kind of need one competitor to twitch.tv of some kind.

Currently we have YouTube, Livestream, Ustream, with Azubu on the horizon and DailyMotion in France. We've got plenty of challengers to come :)

Probably should be a union for streamers, there's a fair amount of exploitation out there. The NDA on each streamers contract means that they're probably getting paid wildly varying amounts and at different punctuality.

We're actually pretty transparent about this. Our standard partnership contract is a $3.50 flat-rate CPM, with a premium tier above this for channels that adhere to more strict guidelines that enable us, alongside CBS, to sell their advertising space directly to a company or brand. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved: broadcaster gets higher pay, advertiser works directly with someone they can trust, we get content for promotion that we don't have to worry about.

That's all about the individual streamer and their settings.

Plenty of Own3d streamers ran in 1080p. Like Destiny for SC2 or Phantoml0rd for LoL.

Certainly. 1080p isn't a standard on twitch, but it seems pretty much every major streamer at least has 720p, whereas "HD" on own3d seemed really inconsistent as it wouldn't show the resolution.

The original name for Twitch was "Xarth." In fact, there are still remnants of the Xarth name on our FTP's, servers and elsewhere in the code. Twitch was something that was randomly spit out on the spot by our head designer as a substitute for anything but Xarth.

mr jared, why won't you guys update/fix the android app!!! :(

The hunt for our Android developer is set to begin anew!

He made the right decision.

How often are mid tier and below streamers (as in, not the big partners like IPL or ESL) are paid ? monthly/quarterly ?

They also make money through the Subscribe button that there larger Partners get approved for. I think it's something like a 50/50 split but I can't say for sure as I'm not close to anyone who has that deal.

Speaking of the Android app - the iOS one I've found to be quite inconsistent at times. When it works it's fine, but that's if it decides to behave. I think at least a part of it has to do with changing resolutions. Would love to be able to rely on my phone to watch stuff in bed, rather than using my laptop.

i've never seen an ad on it so it's cool w/ me :P

Well, to be fair, I don't remember seeing ads on iOS app either. Maybe I don't notice them when the stream loads up, I don't have a memory of them like when you load up a stream on my PC :)

I wonder if that is a bug, I think it would be in the interests of the streamer that the ad loads?

I just want to watch on my nexus 7 in updated glory with chat and signing in! Haha

Good to hear that news Mr. Jared. Make those new devs make a Vita and 360 version as well ;)

Just honestly, be like Netflix. On every device in existence, hehe

It's indicative of what's happening to the entire esports industry - decline. The 2010 push is coming to an end. Team IM even posted on the TL forums that they're in danger of losing LG as a sponsor. Slayers shut down, Complexity lost their house, teams are dropping left and right. In another year, it will be niche again and the articles about esports tournaments will stop cropping up in the press.

Either that of it's going to be Riot Esports (TM)

I don't really follow the scene, but is LoL the only game pulling decent numbers? I wasn't aware of this, I felt like esports were gaining in popularity, but perhaps that's just an illusion as I've become more invested in Dota over the last year.

Dota is slowly growing
SC2 is declining
LoL is massive but being propped up by the developer
CS:GO failed to launch
FGC keeps on truckin
Shootmania...lol

MLG is losing money
IPL is losing money
IEM is...I dunno.

I like the sound of Xarth XD. Just sounds cooler to me.
