Pages from Nintendo Power 1989 May/June Issue ~30 Images

I've been going through my old gaming boxes and came across some remnants of magazines that i've tossed already. Thought it'd be fun to take a trip down memory lane with some of the pages.....Some of the content is so dang weird, but overall it's fun and nostalgic. enjoy!

Any gaffers in the issue?

I remember most of that. Those Dragon Warrior illustrations are beautiful. Also dig the Final Fantasy IV (II) ones they had by the same artist. I know some have said they don't look like the in-game characters but I loved em'.

Considering Nintendo Power is sadly gone now and those are so very old it shouldn't be an issue against the ToS if not given a pass in this case.

Nintendo Power....was so much part of my child hood, it's hard to imagine it's still gone.

When a new Nintendo Power arrived in the mail, in the years before the internet..... pure bliss.

Not typically an issue for 20 year old magazines.

Almost 30 years old :O

I have a feeling the Nester awards are rigged in favor of games appearing on Nintendo consoles...

Never got to see the earlier ones. It's (slightly) older than me!

Nester really is prominent back then, huh?

He use to be in every issue with a two page comic that also gave you a hint for a game at the time. He use to co star with Howard until the man he was based on left.

When Nester vanished only to reappear once every so many years I thought it was so odd.

Blades of Steel getting the top spot in Players' Picks?

That's what I'm talking about.

I love print gaming magazines of yesteryear. They really illustrate how gaming was SUCH a different thing than it is today.

I totally forgot that I used to beg my mom to fly me to Redmond WA because I had to see what the Nintendo office looked like. I thought that if I showed up they would give me the super secret Zelda 3 or something.

Nintendo Power went from nothing to one of the top magazines (circulation numbers) in the US within a year of it's launch. What a phenomenon.

I discovered and sent in the code for Super Mario Kart that allows you to race as a miniaturized racer and it was published in Classified Information. I stupidly used Agent #007 instead of something more distinguishing like my birthday that I could use to prove it was me.

Thanks for the pics OP. I was born waaaay too late to read this era of gaming mags, but it's nostalgic all the same.

Sure you did. Receipts please.

Oh man, I used to LOVE reading Nintendo Power at the library in my school. So many great games back then. As someone above mentioned, gaming was such a different world back then.

Awesome magazine. I was a subscriber and was there to get this issue in the mail.

Glad to see Zelda 2 win all the awards and get 1st in Top 30.

Born 1981 here.

Man I miss reading magazines as a kid. I have stacks of old Power Unlimiteds (Dutch magazine) that I used to read back to back. I remember them putting up the first image of Sonic Adventure and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Now you'd go online to discuss it but back then all you could do was stare at the page for a while longer. This thread makes me wanna pull all those books out.

looking at classified information i feel bad generations will never know the mystique games had back then. every single game no matter how great or crappy was like a pandora's box of secrets. lot of the time the fun was in figuring them out instead of actually playing the game proper

regret throwing away all my nintendo power and EGM issues so bad. looking at these scans really takes me back

Summer always makes me think about NP.

I used to spend so much time staring out the window wondering if today was the day my new issue would come.

I remember convincing my mom to subscribe me and my brother to Nintendo Power magazine because it came with Dragon Warrior or something. The cover of the box was so fucking epic.
