Lucifer was not actually the devil at first. When he was mentioned in the Bible it was most likely about a king. It was Milton and Dante who later appropriated the name for Satan.

I think the ones like these are the best, where Lucifer is shown to be beautiful/perfect as he was made. I don't really like the ones where he's some kind of ugly horse demon thing. That's okay for an overall 'Devil' character but as for Lucifer I much prefer a real human figure that was cast out for his pride, ego etc. all that.

Is that right? I always thought that Lucifer was his name while he was an angel and he called himself Satan after he fell.

and don't forget he battles Death himself in PL

Two of my favourite depictions of Lucifer/Satan are the character of Woland in "The Master and Margarita" and the androgynous, hooded depiction in "The Passion of the Christ".

I always felt like Cassius and Brutus don't really belong there. After all they only betrayed Caesar (who according to Dantes logic should be in the first circle of hell anyway)

That's why I love Doré's drawings:

He was beautiful and pride angel after all.

Anyway, Doré's illustrations for Paradise Lost are just beautiful.

Same, the hoofed monster imagery doesn't do anything for me. The visual of lucifer as a schemer or how he was before his fall has always been preferred for me.

This is Lucifer before the fall, as depicted as Helel in the SMT series. The picture is gigantic, so I'll only link it.

lolz

SMT has always been horrible with their mythology. Helel shouldn't be associated with Lucifer or Satan at all.

I personally always though of Tom Waits as the quintessential Americana Devil.

It's the lazy, arrogant charm he has along with his choice of casual and refined clothing.

i don't like the grotesque ones. what makes Lucifer so intriguing is that he is an enigma, manipulator, not an openly ravaging monster. leave that to his lieutenants Beelzebub, Belphegor, and all them

he was a talking snake. A great red dragon. There is nothing subtle about him.

One of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes, because of how awesomely Burgess Meredith (Micky from Rocky) played the Devil.

That's how I always figured it to be. I'm not religious but I mean think about it, if some goat lookin fucker presented himself to you..would you REALLY? Join him let alone listen to what he had to say? Fuck no.

But if he presented himself as an angel you'd take everything he said as truth.

Kinda like Supernatural

Not Satan directly, but Melkor from Tolkien's mythos was clearly inspired by Christian theology.

Melkor before his downfall, which mimics Lucifer's fall from grace.

From Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal." I originally thought it was Satan/Devil but it's actual Death. I figured I'd post it anyway.
