PAL Charts - Week 05, 2009

lowlylowlycook said:
Hmmm, practically every game above LBP on the chart came out before LBP, some long before. I'm trying to figure out why you would have settled on picking out LBP to mention. Maybe you can help me out here.

Oh, I can help you.

LBP was called LittleBigBomba. Wasn't expected to have any legs. And was claimed to be a failure and a niche title.

Most Nintendo titles, Call of Duty sequels, or FIFA iterations are expected to sell well. LittleBigPlanet is a new IP on a system that doesn't cater towards the crowd that you would expect to enjoy a title like LittleBigPlanet.

Does that help?

AFAIK chart track doesn't count official bundles sales for games. I think someone mentioned that once. nli10 maybe ?

Could have been me - I did used to know how it worked many years ago but evidence sugests it's been updated.

Historically it has been:

If it's inside the box and doesn't have a separate bar code to scan (WiiSports is a classic example) then it won't count towards the chart.

If it's separate to the box and is scanned as a separate item but in the bundle (like the early PS3 one where Motorstorm was taped to the box) then it counts as a game sale and goes into the chart.

Trouble is things like the recent DS game bundles which are both available in the box or as an up-sell have confused matters. Also the KFP+LegoIndy+Cotroller for £20 bundle which has become the X360s answer to WiiPlay has a single barcode but seems to have had chart impact.

I think that the multipack games now count individually for the chart (even though both disks come in the same DVD case). That the barcodes for the DS packs and PS3 packs are unique per offer and will double count (once for console and once for game) which explains the rise of those bundled DS titles. I suspect that there is a rule that says the game has to be available separately to count excluding Demo disks and WiiSports and other products of a technically Zero value.

Chances are there's a Chart Track person who could tell you more, they used to be quite receptive to e-mails but i'll bet there are one or two lurking here.

Either way, LBP was well advertised, well positioned and didn't really sell like a AAA title in it's first weeks. Turns out word of mouth isn't a Nintendo owned property just yet and little sack-cloth legs are quite effective at running up the charts, which over the festive period added up to quite a chunk of sales. LBP was a new IP, and is now a proven hit.

I still say that if they'd included a little Sack-boy or girl they'd be at a million by now, but that's just me longing for a little orange sack-boy of my own. I blame Stephen Fry...

I see :) Thanks for the clarification.

Also, haven't seen the January ELSPA sales awards posted. Am I blind ?

Aaaaaaaaand. Guess what bitches ? WEIGHTED CHARTS ARE BACK.

Been a while since I've updated them.

Pegi.info only list that the game contain violence, are there really any violence in Skate 2? I guess maybe it is can have something to do with that meat mode (or what is called) where the goal is to hurt yourself by using your skateboard and jump of a ledge or something.

This is some interesting info, thanks for posting this! :)

EDIT: By the way, does the marketshare account for 2008 only, or is this the marketshare in total when the year 2008 were over?

It's 2008 only, as you can see by calculating the marketshare from the "Total consoles sold in 2008" numbers.

Wow PS2 software is still going strong, but Nintendo wins hardware hands down.

NDS hardware = PS2/PS3/PSP/360.

I'm a little surprised that COD: WAW is selling so much and has already snuffed out COD4 on the LIVE charts.

The MP levels are so much darker and messier than COD4, and those dogs are freaking annoying.

Weighted-charts
Fairly consistent weightings so far in 2009. I see Wii has increased nearly up to the level it was during the summer when other platforms suffered long periods without new software, and Wii hasn't consistently enjoyed this level of relative strength since the the weeks before 360/PS3/etc software started being released consistently again (starting with a mega week of two big releases the week following the end of the holidays, as shown on the graph).

The current trends are hardly surprising for anybody following the charts. As Wii titles have longer legs than 360 and PS3 titles, Wii does better on these weighted charts when 360 and PS3 have few new (big) games come out, or if Wii has some new big games come out (or both combined, like the middle of last year with the mega combo of Wii Fit and Mario Kart at a time of weakness for new PS360 releases).

All obvious stuff however.

New UK Top 40 numbers are up now :)
http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=110032

Abit earlier than what they use to be up, right? Arent they usually up around 6pm - 7pm (GMT +1 timezone)? Or i think the numbers were up abit earlier last week, or maybe it was about 2 weeks ago, as well if i am not mistaken.

EDIT: I forgot to post the weekly Chart Track sales "news" (or what i shall call it).

09/Feb/2009

Nintendo are showing no signs of over-exertion, as their fitness drive moves into a fourth consecutive week at the top of the All Formats Chart. Sales of ‘Wii Fit’ are only down 2% on last week – the lowest sales decline of any All Formats Top 10 game this week.

‘FIFA 09’ (-12%) shimmies up one place to No2, knocking Activision-Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: World at War’ down to No3 (-20%) – its lowest All Formats Chart position since its launch 13 weeks ago. Every game in the All Formats Top 10 loses sales and Nintendo’s ‘Mystery Case Files: Millionheir’ is the only Top 40 new release, debuting at No4, one place ahead of similar title ‘Professor Layton’ (-14%). Nintendo manage 5 games in the All Formats Top 10 with familiar favourites ‘Mario Kart Wii’ (-13%) and ‘Wii Play’ (-16%) both non-movers at No’s 6 and 7 respectively. This week last year the software market was up and there were 3 new games in the All Formats Top 10 and a new No1 with Capcom’s ‘Devil May Cry 4’. In 2009 the software market has not yet witnessed its first weekly sales increase, while Nintendo and Wii Fit’s dominance at the top in 2009 is in stark contrast to the 5 different games that were All Formats No1’s during the first six weeks of last year.

EA’s ‘Need for Speed: Undercover’ (-28%) may have dropped out of the Top 10, from No10 to No13, but the American publisher still has two Top 10 games despite a 37% drop in sales for ‘Skate 2’ – down from No5 to No8. Despite falling sales, Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic’ (-5%) and Activision-Blizzard’s ‘Guitar Hero: World Tour’ (-18%) climb back into the Top 10, both up 3 places to No’s 9 and 10 respectively. A retailer price promotion on the Xbox 360 version of ‘Left 4 Dead’ (+32%) sees it climb 14 places to No15, while another EA title, ‘SimAnimals’ (+90%) enters the Top 40 for the first time at No22, in its second week of release.

Layton actually had reasonable stock, as does Wii Fit.

MCF is basically the Where's Wally (or Waldo if you are American) books in game format and is TV advertised to seem similar to Layton. Hopefully WOM will kill this off and Layton can keep going. Expect MCF to do well next week though too. :(

There is no reason to rush release layton 2, although I do hope we get it for next Xmas.

(Chrono Trigger)Number 10 on the DS chart. Decent I guess.

Works out to just outside the top 40. Better than average for Square games on the DS - must have outsold TWEWY.

I'm tempted to get this for a trip, but as I'm not a massive fan of JRPG fear it might bore me.

42 All-Time Classics made it to No.35 in the Individual Formats (Units) Top 40, with it also placing 7th in the DS Top 40. So Chrono Trigger certainly wasn't too far off the pace, and could rise next week. It's a stronger start than HoM, FFF: CT, FFTA2, FFCC: RoF, DQM: J and TWEWY. Only FFIV and FFXII: RW have started stronger recently.

By the way, did we already know this:

- 10 CHRONO TRIGGER TOSE SQUARE ENIX SQUARE ENIX EUROPE
I didn't realise TOSE was behind this fantastic port-with-extras!

EDIT: Oh, and Pikmin's started quite a bit lower than I expected (No.17, Wii Full Price Top 40). Has it been advertised much on TV? I'm in the UK, but don't really watch much telly nowadays...but I did see banners up in GameStation in Manchester this lunchtime, along with lots of promotional stuff in GS and GAME for Mystery Case Files.

There's been quite a lot of ads for pikmin though i'd expect it to follow the usual nintendo pattern of rising in the second week though its never gonna be a chart topper it stands a good chance of selling decently in the long run

Ye, i think that Resistance 2 seems to be selling fine :) Resistance 2 has so far sold at least 200k copies in the UK, which i think seems to be a good sales preformance, at least in my opinion :)

EDIT: I added some text.
