‘Overwatch’ (-42%) remains at the top for the second straight week, clocking up five crowns in total since its launch at the end of May.

It joins ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops III’ and ‘Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in having topped the charts five times in 2016 so far. There’s little in the way of new releases this week, which means that former chart toppers ‘F1 2016’ (-48%) and ‘Deus Ex: mankind: Divided’ (-58%) each climb to No2 and No3 respectively. ‘Lego Stars Wars: The Force Awakens’ (-39%) climbs 4 places to No4 while ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ (-47%) is up a place to No5. The Top 10 is formed of largely familiar faces with only ‘Doom’ (-23%) at No9 breaking back in after a two week absence.

We will know next week how Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of The Forgotten Past did it. I'm a bit nervous to see if at least it doesn't completely crater because I am a big Dragon Quest fan. It is hard to believe that after 3.5 years I will finally be able to get my hands on it.

For reference, the latest Dragon Quest title released in the West (Dragon Quest Heroes) sold 3,100 units. A classic turn-based jrpg like Bravely Second: End Layer debuted selling 4,500 units this year.

too bad the game is a letdown, it's probably the best selling title of Sony this generation, I hope they will deliver numbers pretty soon, I'm curious.

There's no uncertainty about that, we knew it would be the best selling Sony title this gen so far as soon as we got the first week sales. (2.7M)

How is Uncharted 4 still selling so much? It really is top of it's game. I'm pretty sure there aren't many games like it anymore, and of those that are released (Quantum Break for example), well, they bomb.

I'm surprised NMS sales haven't fell off a cliff.

also this goes up

12 (17) PS4 THE WITCHER III: WILD HUNT GOTY EDITION (BANDAI NAMCO ENTERTAINMENT)

And the XBO version is still not on the charts, it was an Xbox console exclsuive less gen, had a bundle and marketing, but i guess those PS4 owners love their RPGs.

Most genre do better on PlayStation. By default it has always attracted people with different tastes. In turn we see the diversity of games it gets from publishers. On this front Xbox has always been fighting an uphill battle.

Do you know how IX did on the DS?

It should be able to show in the French top 5, but not holding my breath for UK indeed.

Looks like US may end up being the only country that MS has a fighting chance.

UK still sells okay for XB1 too although the swing to PS4 for multi-platform is undeniable. I guess Scorpio will give some view as to whether power is the key or not (I think it plays a part but not in isolation so I'm not sure Scorpio will change much if that's its main marketing driver).

Interesting NMS has held so well. Seems the core game does appeal enough to a decent audience. It's a pity in hindsight they didn't stick to "what it is" more in marketing as it looks like that was actually enough for it to do well.

U4 isn't really a surprise for me. While U2 remains the franchise peak for me ND delivered a very solid game that also functions as a console showcase as well as having a pretty fun and decent MP as well and while it was arguably overkill they delivered a humongous send off to the core characters that is sure to delight most franchise fans. Tie that with the usual strong critical reaction and its no surprise it's doing well.

I'm curious to see if MS can deliver something similar with Gears 4: Uncharted has certainly set the bar to measure it against for performance and critical/fan reaction.

I don't think so, console sales in the UK have always close, and unless theres any insider retailers i don't see any reason to change thought on that.

They're hurt by the fact that they've released one exclusive retail game in 2016 and it bombed hard, once the more sticky games like gears and forza are out and hit the charts it'll look better.

I think Gears will end up like Halo 5. It'll chart somewhat below the series standard (underperforming is the trend with Xbox exclusives this gen) and then proceed to drop through the charts until retailers start to throw it in bundles.

It's worth pointing out that Uncharted has been steadily bundled and discounted since its release, but it's never dropped beyond the top 10 (as far as I remember?). Whether this is Sonys retail strategy (you see it a lot with their first party titles - enough to call it a strategy) or the stores own method of continuously getting through stock, who knows.

Edit: thanks Bruno. Wow those numbers actually look pretty good compared to what we can expect these days. It's really strange how difficult it's been to try and get the DQ series to take off outside of Japan. And today's market is pretty much the worst conditions have been since before the PS1 for JRPGs in Europe.

Why? Almost every game does.

When you think how cheap the XBO has been here for many months in the £200 range and below and PS4 up in the £250+ range it's quite stark to see it's hardly made a dent in software, especially price conscious UK.

Will be interesting to see how the slims change anything.

Or most people waiting for Scorpio.

Very unlikely. Scorpio looks like high end expensive option. The majority don't normally wait for that: most people buy a decent device now at a good price vs waiting for whatever unknown high end model is coming.

There will be more existing XB1 owners waiting to upgrade than new customers deferring purchases. In PAL (even UK) XB1 is for those already into the brand and for exclusives. Hence even in UK software looks soft as there just haven't been many notable XB1 exclusives TBH.

In general, even in UK, PS4 versions of multi-platform titles chart higher and show better legs hence the way the charts look.

I remember debating with a few people back when UC4 was released who were convinced that their opinion of the game would translate to an effect on real world sales because it's shared by the large majority.

Always funny when minority opinions are utterly convinced they are not.

Anyways, some pretty big drops for all the titles this week. Couldn't have been good software totals.

The UK retail video game market took a break in August fuelled by the over-performer No Man's Sky. Unit sales remained flat but sales revenue increased by 24.3% YoY. Unfortunately, September is not looking very kind, let's hope FIFA 17 is not down this year because otherwise it will be a bloodbath. Final Fantasy XV delay won't help too.
