PAL Charts - Week 40, 2008

SCEE will be happy with the FIFA %. They have invested a lot of money (I assume) in ensuring that the FIFA ads only show the Playstation versions of the game. In fact, the other week there was an entire ad-break long advert for FIFA, showing them playing it with the Sixaxis/DS3 and the Playstation logo at the end.

I wonder if MS will do the same thing for PES. Interestingly though, the interest seems to be moving away from PES and back to FIFA again the UK.

Sony are now an official sponsor of FIFA. I am guessing the FIFA 09 adds being PS3 only are part of that deal.

I equate the Madden crowd in the US to the Fifa/PES crowd in the EU (correct me if I'm wrong, please, but these seem like similar demographics), and it appears that Nintendo has largely missed this demographic in both territories. And it's quite clear that it isn't just a Sony/Playstation loyalty thing, as Microsoft has succesfully leeched a substantial portion of these consumers this generation.

Yes. And it also doesn't help that Wii owners are buying 17 other games each week.

I'd say that the Fifa players (and Pro Evo, I know casual gamers that only buy that too) are very similar to the Madden crew - flat earth gamers who only believe in one specific title or series. Naturally other people play too but it does bring customers out of the woodwork!

Nintendo have always had a problem with 3rd party Western specialities such as FPS and sports, even the DS can't convert on this.

It must be a concern for EA too, I'm glad we are getting the full games (I got Tiger Wii, may get Madden) but it can't be too far off us getting TigerWoods MiniGolf Challenge, Fifa Fiive-a-Siide and other mini game based family versions too. If it keeps the 'Street' brand off the Nintendo consoles then I'm all for it (as long as we get the grown up versions too).

UK: Looks like all that advertising helped out the PS3 version quite a lot. Respectable breakdown given the install base differences. I wonder what weeks to come will look like.

I knew it would be much closer, I think the exclusive advertising helps at least in the short term by getting your userbase out. I think the 360 version will take a larger share in subsequent weeks though..

Hey these all charted this week. Not great but hopefully they can rack up some sales over time.

Hurray for SMG!

Maybe it's cultural bias, but I don't think Madden et al are particularly good videogames in their own right, but almost all of their appeal is in resembling real-world football, thus making elements that would otherwise suck (frequent interruptions, long wait times, close-up animations, weird control mechanics) acceptable. IOW if you don't know anything about football, there's virtually nothing to love about Madden.

OTOH I think the soccer games tend to have somewhat better playability even for people that don't particularly care about real-world soccer. There are still concessions made that reduce playablity, purely to bolster the resemblance to the real thing, but the game is overall smoother, interruptions are less frequent, and there's more time spent directly controlling things.

Hurray for SMG!

De Blob seems to be ÂŁ30 everywhere - I'm very tempted! Hope the exposure makes it take off.

SMG was/is being bundled with Wii's for free at GAME this week - I think it's fantastic that a free game is one of the best ones ever made.

Drawn To Life: Spongebob entered the DS chart too - Locke's Quest didn't :(

BUY THIS GAME YOU STUPIDS!
Auuugh. This can't be happening. Game so good, Cover so mediocre, packin advertisement so atrocious, sales so low.... but game so good,... Cover... so... *dies*

It's too bad PES Wii isn't up against the other versions. I'm guessing it would behave much better than the Fifa version.

Given that Morrison's are selling FIFA 09 on the PS3 this week for ÂŁ25 I wouldn't be surprised if it outsells the 360 version come next weeks charts.

De Blob seems to be ÂŁ30 everywhere - I'm very tempted! Hope the exposure makes it take off.

Look online

De Blob - ÂŁ17.99 on Play.com (Currently out of stock, if you can't wait Sendit have it for ÂŁ23.89)

Wii definitely has no advantage on those traditional/hardcore-style games that can't make good use of Wiimote. Soccer game is clearly one of them (PES Wii is a nice try, but the change almost makes it play like a completely different game).

And its a good thing too. PES Wii needed something to make up for the lower graphical power (something that might actually be important to people in sports games) and late as hell release. It couldnt be regular PES with waggle tacked on

To all those blaming the All Play label or EA did Wii Fifa sales go down this year or were they just stagnant like Wii Madden sales?

dk_ said:
Why would someone do that?

Because the 360 sells like shit here in germany and the casual userbase on ps2 is still big ?

cw_sasuke said:

The 360 sold almost the same as the PS2 with its much larger install base and therefore the 360 sales like shit?

Sounds to me like the 360 isn't doing so bad in Germany, obviously not as good as the Ps3 but clearly not "like shit"

The only thing that we know for sure is that last years Fifa Wii edition charted higher than this years edition in UK.

Because Sony was market leader last gen? Casual gamer still buy the newest Sing Star on ps2 and don't give a damn about the new generation. Except for Wii Fit and Wii Sports maybe.

Aaaaaaand that would be my last update.
Got a shitload of stuff to do at work and I'll soon start to write my thesis so I won't have much time to spend on GAF anymore, let alone handling the PAL Charts threads.
If someone wants to step up and take care of it, be my guest. I'll share the scripts as well as the useful links, and the template of the OPs of course.

Theres a slight shortage according to sony due to higher than expected sales this year and their refusal to raise shipments.

The wiiboard is establishing itself as a unique platform, on which you can build a lineup. I wouldn't be surprised to see this peripheral sell more than the PS3 or the x360 this year.
