PAL Charts - Week 8, 2017

Anyone have any other zelda launch numbers in the UK for comparison? As it's the UK which is hardly fertile ground for Nintendo software I'm not expecting much.

How neatly I'm kinda surprised for the optimism for Zelda beating Horizon.
I think Horizon is gonna kill it.
But both will do well regardless.
Also will switch have a better debut than Wii U?

Depends on how many they send over. The real question is whats switch going to do in its second month.

There's 2 facets, Zelda is most likely going to be sold with every single switch... so it depends how many Switches are sold.

Unless Switch has a pretty large UK debut and Wii U also sees strong attach rate I think Horizon, with the much larger PS4 install base in PAL and a lot of hype/interest and open world lure could take number 1.

It's not a given - there's factors that could give it to Zelda. But I think those assuming it's a slam dunk for Zelda are being pretty over optimistic its that easy.

Horizon has plenty of factors behind it that could see it take number 1 in PAL.

Ideally both will show strong numbers of course and given the platform difference I doubt either will eat into the other much (i.e. I don't believe in general market there will be a lot of people having to chose between them, most people will either be on Sony or Nintendo platform) so I don't expect much if any notable cannibalization between the titles.

Looking forward to the performance of Horizon and Zelda next week. Both should perform quite well.

I anticipate a separate thread being made either way. "Horizon outsells Zelda in UK"/"Zelda outsells Horizon in UK"

lol

Nintendo Hardware UK Launch Sales:

Game Boy Advance - 67,000
Nintendo GameCube - 69,000
Nintendo DS - 87,000
Nintendo Wii - 105,000
Nintendo 3DS - 113,000
Nintendo Wii U - 40,000

And if I'm not mistaken this is the most expensive Nintendo hardware launch in the UK ever? Not sure how expensive the N64 was.

And then you're accused of being a fanboy or spinning
I'm only half serious

Horizon being a new IP might hurt it but even if it sells more than Zelda people will say Horizon had more days to sell compared to Zelda.

Welp Microsoft won't be pleased. I know For Honor is multiplatform but it still sucks for them that it won despite a 70% drop.

I think Horizon will beat Zelda comfortably on Switch but lose if they combine with Wii U sales.

I have not seen much in the way of hype for Switch compared to the PS4 when it launched. I know it's big on GAF but outside I see very little so much so people don't realise it's being released this week that I talked to and they I would say would know in passing if a new console was being watched.

As for sales. Horizon will have two days extra since its released Wednesday in the UK and Zelda on Friday but that shouldn't matter since its a new console with this it's only big title.

How has the advertising been for the Switch/Zelda, I don't watch much TV so not much of a sample size, but I've seen nothing marketing wise for it. Whereas every time I walk past the TV during an ad break I see an Horizon ad.

Seen trailers on prime time TV, at the cinema, and in the London underground.

That's a very poor debut for Halo Wars 2 but not surprising. I expect the game to underperform pretty much everywhere.

Also Horizon will outsell Zelda next week

i bet Horizon will break the record for Highest Selling Exclusive New IP title and it's gonna top the month, i would be surprised if they didnt. not because Zelda is a bad game but the massive difference on userbase and stock issues of the game and hardware itself (Switch) will be against it.

Nah, stuff like The Division and Destiny sold way too much for Horizon to handle.

Don't get people saying HW2 is good. The game had longer than a week tracking due to the ultimate edition, and it still debuted below FH which probably didn't light the sales on fire in its first week let alone 72% down

But I'm not really surprised, marketing for this game has been terrible and it's a RTS

Not this again.

Thanks for the context, seems Nintendo was weaker than I previous thought. If that 60k turns out to be a good ballpark, then Zelda will likely not out sell Horizon (which I expect around 100k). We'll see in 7 days.

Amazon UK currently lists Breath of The Wild (switch) as the best selling game of 2017 on their site. Horizon comes after it. As long as the supply is there, Zelda should win out. I wouldn't be surprised if Horizon outsells it though due to bigger existing audience base.

Edit -

Horizon will come nowhere near Destiny or The Division. Like not even in the same ballpark.

But I do expect it to launch bigger than NMS so a pretty huge launch for an exclusive. I think 120k is the floor for launch week.

I don't think there was a chance in hell that HW2 would perform anywhere close to HW. HW is the best selling RTS game on consoles. Admittedly that is like saying you are the tallest midget but hard to expect HW2 to outperform HW when you account for the decrease in franchise popularity.

Agreed. Also, FWIW it will easily be the biggest new exclusive IP this gen. Arguably more than double SO or Bloodborne.

.

I mean its a bad debut in general, not just in comparison to HW1.

The absolute best it can be is 30k, and its likely considerably less than that. Hopefully the budget wasn't very large.

Any UK data on previous open world RPG's?

I personally think 100k is a minimum for Horizon. Based on nothing of course.

Skyrim Remaster debut at around 100k in October. I think Witcher 3 was at 175k. Not necessarily an RPG but WD2 sold around 80k, IIRC.

Oh I agree the number cannot be that great. Probably closer to 25k than 30k but It is all relative. I mean how many copies did Nioh sell during its first week of sale?

I'll go for HZD beating Zelda by around 30k but I'm not totally convinced HZD is getting into a wider audience radar just yet. It might be strong month for it rather mega first week sales. Maybe even games being ÂŁ44 now might take the edge of the first week. Couldn't say if it would be 80k or 100k or 130k but I'm expecting over a 100k.

As for Zelda, DS and Wii were huge but Wii U bombed. Switch looks cool and should do better but launch price worldwide seems a bit high, sort of thinking 60-70k for Zelda, also note is it on Wii U and some games did do well.

The Zelda sellouts will make it interesting. Nintendo might still get a number 1, but if they don't, it's on them.

Switch and Wii U versions sold out at some sites, so they probably could have sold more.

I see we're starting early....

Not really. I don't really see how the system with 0 install base is gonna produce better sales than the system with healthy software sales and millions of consoles already established when we are talking about bigger budget titles.

Is that unreasonable or?

I don't see Zelda outselling Horizon - sure it'll have an amazing attach rate, but the install base of the PS4 utterly dwarfs the install base of both the Wii U and the Switch.

What could help Zelda would be the fact that a decent share of Horizon's sales are gonna be digital and therefore not tracked.

I feel that works both ways. Since both physical versions are selling out, a decent share of Zeldas sales will likely be digital, or missed sales as people have to wait.

Like yeah, Horizon is likely to beat Zelda in the UK, but if it's close, Nintendo have already left sales on the table.
