Enough votes is actually the only thing you need to qualify for office. And she has more votes than anyone on GAF =)
George W. Bush is living proof that being in office doesn't mean you're qualified to be. Democracy can be weird sometimes.

Thankfully this isn't something that elected officials should have to worry about.
A certain lack of sophistication, but even academics furiously scribe talking points/rebutals as it comes to them in panel discussions, debates, etc.

And it's her folksy absolutism that fuels both her fans and detractors. She can concievably win the GOP ticket, but her rabid base is fringe enough to prevent her from winning a national two-party race. it'd be interesting to see how vociferously other Republican candidates attack her, though.

I hope you just mistook Sarah Palin for a Democrat because Sarah Palin is a fucking moron and then your amazement would be justified

And also a giant hypocrite. "BLEARGH BARACK OBAMA USES A TELEPROMPTER (just like every other American president since Reagan) EXCUSE ME I MUST CONSULT MY HAND-NOTES"

Ultimately, it's a non-issue, and it should be a little embarrassing to be covering such a story.

...but this is person who likes to push the teleprompter meme. I find it hard to defend her.

I don't even care that she wrote notes on her hand except for the fact that they aren't even useful. If she wrote down a specific reminder to jog her memory for an anecdote or a useful fact, i'd let it slide. She can't even memorize the most important talking points?! God almighty.

Add to the fact her stunning hypocrisy (again) and you are damn right this is newsworthy.

I don't get why this is as big of a deal as some here are making it. Some people use index cards; some use teleprompters; in this case, Palin used her palm. I don't mean to say that I think she is capable of being President, but rather that this isn't a sign one way or the other.

Everyone else who is questioned about running for president generally defers the question, saying they're not in a position to consider it at the moment.

Nor is this.

ya know, I was just gonna make a thread 'what if Palin got elected in 2012'

It's a really scary scary possibility.

If that happens, Canada should close our border with the U.S to prevent mass exodus.
This doesn't make sense. You'd get a population boost consisting of America's finest and smartest individuals.

That would be a plus in my book.:lol

It wasn't during a speech, it was during a Q&A. She used note cards for her speech and no one cares about that. Add to the fact that she insulted Obama for using a teleprompter while she had the notes on her hand, it makes it even more pathetic and hilarious.

How the fuck is this woman so famous? Seriously - it boggles my mind.

My roommate and his girlfriend LOVE her. They would vote for her for president in a heartbeat. And I have a sneaking suspicion that my parents would as well.

I agree, but there's a world of differences between academics doing it and a politician doing it on stage.

To your last point, I hope furiously. I'd like to see, for once, an election that presses me to make a decision to vote for the better candidate as opposed to picking the less incompetent of the two; Palin tanked the GOP so bad the last election that it was barely a contest.

But posts pointing out Palin's lack of whatever is basically meme territory by now. Is it even funny any more?

Have you considered checking these people into a mental health institute?

Seriously, Sarah Palin hasn't done a god damn thing worthy of someone's admiration. If she didn't have her name picked out of a hat to be the Vice President, none of these people would know she existed. And she's a certifiable moron, to boot. No amount of irrational cognitive dissonance can change the fact that she rarely ever knows what she's talking about.

Is this some elaborate trick? She's always trying to push how joe-blo she is. Could all these blunders be on purpose to seem more down to earth?

If Republicans nominate her, they deserve to lose every fucking election for the next 10 years. The whole damn country should turn blue.

She keeps lowering the bar, so yeah. Once she stops or it gets to the lowest point possible it might stop being funny.

She's actually dangerous to this country and if I were the leaders of the GOP, I'd figure out a way to stop her running.

when you consider the fact Palin is just another establishment politician she's far, far less dangerous.

Now if you were to ask me personally, Ron Paul is by far the most dangerous politician out there and danger is examplified by the fact he neither votes for the lobbyist, special interest and not a member of washington power elites. Instead Dr. Paul supports the constitution, a limited government, and end to both the welfare/warfare states and these alone define why he's VERY DANGEROUS for america.

It's clear to rational people that she isn't the sort of person that is fit to be president, but the great thing about Democracy is that the voters get what they deserve and if she was elected I would just love to sit back and watch the trainwreck occur.

The way I see it right now, there's no way she won't lose the GOP nomination especially with the adoration of Fox News and you can guarantee she is running for President. The hardcore right wing base love her to death, and unlike the Democrats in the GOP its the base that rules.

If Palin becomes President you can pretty much guarantee that the US is going to continue to go down the drain.

Watch the Fox defense - 'liberal elites' banging on a female politician! She's jane every-woman who sometimes forgets things! Aww :3

Ron Paul doesn't have the support Palin has.

Palin is going to pick up states in the Primary when she runs. I have seen even intelligent Republican supporters reduced to babbles when talking about Palin. These are guys who otherwise can articulate very nicely their positions against Democrats, but when it comes to Palin the intelligence gets thrown out.

I can't believe anyone would defend this by comparing it to a teleprompter. :lol

Teleprompter's display detailed information and entire speeches if necessary. She wrote "budget (cut?)" on her hand. She can't remember that?

What do you expect? There's finally a remotely sexy Republican. When you're used to seeing virtually nothing but ugly old guys wearing bibs and slobbering over themselves, it's kind of exotic and appealing.

You have to look at it in the context of:

1) The event and the type of speaking engagement (giving a speech vs answering questions in a Q&A). I would gander that most people wouldn't be able to memorize a 30 minute speech (or even a 5 minute speech).

2) The content of what was written. I could understand maybe if there were some critical points that would be difficult to commit to memory. For example, maybe she has some statistics, or key numbers, or data she would like to use to make a point and she wants to be precise and exact in her words. However, clearly, this was not the case.

3) The expectations we voters have of people who seek to run this country and lead the most powerful military in the world with access to an enormous cache of nuclear armed warheads. At the least, using index cards would have been excusable and much more professional; this is what we are taught to do in high school and college when we prepared for debates in social studies and history classes. Smart people wouldn't write on their hands because of 1) sweat, 2) shaking hands with others, 3) it looks unprofessional, and 4) you might end up smudging your own face or outfit.

In the context of these three considerations, I deem her a dolt. It's not that most of the people pointing and laughing at her care that she used notes, it's the overall context of the whole situation that makes her a complete joke as a politician and public figure.

Sadly, that photo of the crib notes on her palm will likely become an iconic photo for the right, and all kinds of teabaggers will show at rallies with the exact same words scrawled on their palms too.

She blasts obama for using a teleprompter (something that EVERY SINGLE POLITICIAN USES), while she needs to write "budget tax cuts." on her palm to remind her how to respond to a PRE SCREENED QUESTION.

She's a hypocrite and, more importantly, an idiot who doesn't know what she's talking about. When you need to remind yourself about something as high level as "tax cuts" on the palm of your hand, it speaks volumes about how little you understand.

It's not about democrats being biased or any shit like that, it's about Palin being completely unqualified to be seen as anything other than a dumbass.

I think this retort misses the point here: clearly, there is a big difference between giving a 30 minute speech and answering questions in a Q&A session. Sure, Obama uses a teleprompter for a prepared speech; who in their right mind would commit a 30 minute speech to memory? Does he have nothing better to do with his brain cells and memory? Anyone who's watched even a bit of Obama knows that he does fine without a teleprompter (or notes written on his hand) in the countless town hall style gatherings he's spoken at.

It's scary to know that she's being treated as a fully qualified politician who has a position that she can speak fully and passionately about by a lot of people.

Totally blows my mind that she hasn't been swept under a carpet somewhere, so I can only imagine that the republican party is in such bad shape that they are willing to keep her around simply because she's a public figure that people are latching onto.

...willing to keep her around and keep her candidacy as a possibility despite knowing that they'd only use her to push their own agenda, and she really wouldn't be running the show...

...and if she was running the show, they'd put the entire country at risk simply to have a republican in the big chair.

Kind of disgusting in all senses of the word.

As much as I hate her demeanor, speaking voice, approach to media relations, face, etc., Palin is an admirable woman who takes big chances. Democrats and Republicans alike are wasteful big-government types now, and we have many of the same people who support a smaller government turning up their nose at Sarah Palin when she's actually exactly what they need. If you have the kind of media exposure that she does, you don't make the decision to align yourself with a tax-revolt movement lightly.

If her presence results in the party moving away from the neocon side and towards a smaller, Goldwater Republican party, I'm comfortable with that. Unfortunately, I'm afraid she herself is too polarizing to be effective in that capacity, and so her admirable message is going to be buried.

In other words ...

Her "admirable message" is empty rhetoric. There are a multitude of individuals who carry the same message but with much more weight and sincerity than she does. She is an attention whore who is masterful at grabbing the eyes and minds of the masses with her "personality" while espousing empty, vacuous, bullshit. She cares not for the Conservative movement; she is in it for Numero Uno.

All politicians are in it for numero uno. The difference is, she's bad at hiding it.

Palin is a neocon, listen to her foreign policy sometimes. She's certainly nowhere near a Goldwater Conservative.

Another thing that confuses me is that she keeps bringing up Reagan during these tea party events. Like Reagan would be welcomed with open arms. The man raised taxes and doubled the debt. :lol :lol
